i think this is a good idea for an event such as quakecon, but since you have 32 players, there's obviously no time for this.

You can't really go blind on the ELO. When you compare the ELO of these players you can maybe sort them in "strongest" and "strong" seeds.

QC had 32 players, followed by DE bracket. Thanks to this format it was one of the best scheduled QC tournaments. All ran over 1.5 day.

Actually almost everything in just one day.

But that was mostly bo3, here they want all bo5s.

I think it's possible to run this in the Prague system (QC rounds to decide seeds and no elimination, but then SE bracket instead of DE), with groups being played bo3.

With full QC tournament format you get 3 group rounds + 5 rounds of WB + 2 rounds of LB + grand final = 11 rounds total. Assuming 1 hour per bo3 round and everything played at the same time, that gives 10 hours + grand final. Entirely possible to run in one day.

With DH format you get 3 group rounds + 4 rounds of SE (assuming half of the players get eliminated in group stage). 7 rounds total. Assuming 1,5 hour per bo5 round, 10,5 hours. Again possible to run in one day and you can see that it's even faster in theory.

BUT, that all assumes you can and want to play all games at the same time!

Surely there's less computers for QL at DH, so you can't do that.

Plus, the level of competition is so high that you wouldn't even want most of that action to happen out of the stream.

So...

Streaming _all_ games of the top group is 6 rounds alone, if you add to that the second group (which is just as interesting!), that's more than a day. I'd change groups to bo3 (since they don't result in elimination) and have an epic first day, but that's just me, they want bo5.

Then even with SE bracket (aka Prague system) and streaming 2 games of each round, it's 8 games before final. With scheduling more at the same time but delaying some to be streamed, it will be rather easy to make all of that bo5 in the second day (assuming it's the usual 2 days + final on stage).

TL;DR: QC groups bo3 + SE bo5 = very possible IMHO!

Get a grip. DaHang has been constantly placing in the top 3 in the last few LANs. He always challenges Rapha and Cypher. Last QuakeCon, which you said was weak but still had the current top 2 players, evil and Rapha, he placed 3rd after beating both Rapha and evil in the group stages, then very narrowly losing to Rapha in the WB final, and finally losing to evil in the LB final.

And you say Cooller should be seeded higher because in the distant past he was a better dueler, but did not participate in the last 3-4 LANs at all. And he should be seeded higher just because he played a close game with Cypher in an online cup?

DaHang has way more practice and way better recent results.

Have you been living under a rock since Cooller retired? DaHang attended every major tournament in the recent past and placed 3rd or 2nd (QuakeCon 2012, beating Rapha in the semis, almost 3-0ing Cypher in the final). What did Cooller do? He won a fun LAN in Moscow. Oh well. That's major.

I don't give a fuck about Cooller, he's never been the best in ql and he's probably never gonna be. But the fact that dahang managed to place 3rd with 2 better guys attending, and beat rapha once in a playoff match is totally irrelevant for this story. The guy didn't do anything relevant in quake live, and everything he did do can't be compared with what cooller did in quakelive. And that's it. Placing Dahang in high seed would be hilarious. Cooller online is considerably weaker than Cooller at LAN, and yeah, playing 3:2 matches with Cypher and Evil makes me think that his "retirement" shouldn't affect the seedings.

Killsen beat rapha in a final once but that doesn't mean he's supposed to be high seed.

I would definitely say amongst the best in Quake Live for sure but not best of all Quake!
One of some examples -> First Q4 event at CPL Dallas around winter 2005 had sickest lineup of Quake players of all time if you ask me.

I don't even know the list by heart and don't even need to check. But you basically had +100 of best QW, Q2, Q3 players at one event fighting in a new Quake for the first time.

Anyways, livestreamer didn't solve this for me, sometimes it helped a bit (at least I thought so), sometimes it lagged even harder with livestreamer.
Now I've been using that chrome plugin for 3 days, every single day watching Source like a white American. Shit's amazing :D

phone streams go through different compression than pc ones, that's why mobile_High quality in livestreamer (and other mobile quality settings) doesn't lag when with all the rest it's just a slideshow.

ridiculous indeed. and it does look good cause mobile_high is pretty high bitrate. it's no source but it's close and way less laggy. what i do is run livestreamer app on a laptop connected to the tv and if stream lags (and it usually does on my puny 50mbit download) i just try those mobile q settings. the only disadvantage is those are a little bit more delayed than the pc ones so if you're keeping up with chat the dissonance is pretty big. but if it means less lag: no brainer.

I do this and it worked perfectly so far.

get a rasberry pi, install raspbmc then it you can choose xbmc as an airplay unit in the twitch app.

Its perfect for hangover sundays with ddk.....

I always watch the streams on my iPad(tm), which sends everything via AirPlay(tm) to my AppleTV(tm) which is connected to my screen. No lag, nice resolution, all gooooood.

At times it's good to be a Apple fanboi :P

I find that so weird. I can barely watch videos with high quality settings (stutters at times), but watching source is not possible (video drops pretty much all the time). And I'm on a 1Gbit/s connection running on a i5 processor which is definitely capable of showing video with that quality.

if this list comes true, you're officially gonna become the biggest quake LAN ever. add quake and quake2 and quake4, fuck, add any duel FPS LAN ever, your LAN's gonna be #1.

but bringing all these guys to sweden is just half of the work. bringing the games to the people is the other half. equally important. with this tournament system it's clear that we can't have 1 match after the other cause it would last till january. i guess that 8 people per group means 4 matches at the time. which means we need 2 streams at the time. this is simply MANDATORY. i know you have a ton of stuff on your mind as organizing an event like this is fucking hard. but don't let half of what you work for go to damn VODs section.

i don't know if you can get 2GD, probably not, but maybe some event partnership with FACEit + Zoot, they started together anyway, or whatever is possible, but we NEED the second cast.

it's not our fault you got all these guys to attend. You have the biggest LAN ever in your hands, do it.

I mean we don't want to impose on the organizers, but 1 stream really does seem a bit ludicrous, given what this event is turning out to be. We should have at least 2-3 streams... ideally with unique casters on each, so like 2GD and his co-caster (Joe?) on the one stream, ddk(+memento or someone?) on another, and finally and then zoot+ins on the last... plus a Russian stream or two. If that can't be done due to formal/contractual reasons, then at the very least the extra streams could have no commentary. But yea having just 1 stream will significantly handicap the coverage potential/reachable limits of cumspraying. Anyways, it's going to be a great tourney regardless :)

Casting should be Zoot+ DDk. 2GD is out of it, he won't know whats going on these days and frankly the guy lost me as a fan when he phoned in some tournaments he was casting. Just being really annoying instead of casting like he should be.

Actually anyone can make it happen, it doesn't have to be blaze. Anyone can randomly decide to (e.g.) make some kind of a donate button that would be used for all the players that did not get into the prize money (aka a lot of them !)

Surely people will think twice about going (again) to the tournament if they can somewhat ease off their investment.

Agreed, donations should go to non prize money players, but all of them??? Dont think so. DH has prize till the 4th place. So id say it should go from 5th place till 10 or 12 max.

That's what I initially thought. But in my opinion and looking at the community's reaction to this dreamhack, we all could be surprised by the amount we could come out with. ;)

edit: actually I didn't mean all of the players. I mean top 16, excluding top4. Which leaves us with 12 spots to pay out. I never meant to pay ALL of them (32-4).

I would honestly prefer zoot & ins to 2gd. I was actually quite bored by 2gds streams at the end. He had no passion what so ever, he himself seemed utterly bored by quake. And he have been out of the loop for a long time now.. Zoot & ins watch these players play almost daily, they are familiar with their styles, strenghts and weakneses and even personalities which i think benefits their casting quite alot.

I doubt 2gd follows quake more then very casually.

2gd was the most manly Quake caster out there, he deliberately didn't care shit about most of the political correctness faggotry. He was making his shows in such a relaxed and outstandingly entertaining way (at least at the start of the GD studio, the times of the Arenas tourneys), so that u could see - he's doing it the way he wants it, just like a man should act.

It's such a rare thing nowadays with all these scared to their shitpants casters who obviously forcing themselves not to say what they want, because their mommy will see, or scared to lose their pg13 kindersurprise rating.

There was no other show as straightforward and immensely fun, except for the twin-cannon of Ash&Agent, but they're casting in Russian, so it's a no go for the NATO world.

The only insult and the bad joke he's ought to be charged with is his absence in QL-scene since that glorious legendary cup, which brought Avek back.

If anyone was insulted by any of 2gd's jokes - u probably have neither balls, nor sense of humor watsoever.

Bad jokes? No. Inappropriate ones? Well, maybe, like the one at MLG which offended some fatty.
But I think hes just a bit too honest sometimes and certain people have trouble handling it, especially those who take themselves too seriously.

Still, he always did an incredible job in terms of analysing and reading the game. Gave you that feeling youre being educated by someone who really understands the game and helps you improve yours, right now. I took endless mental notes thanks to him and I cant say that about any other caster (except for dis&vor, but thats tdm). Actually Im convinced that ql desperately needs someone like him, whos gonna tell people more than that rockets are hitting and players are stacking up before shooting more rockets.

Yeah I agree. Sometimes casters spend the entire game just describing exactly whats happening on screen, to a point where it's almost intrusive. I liked Jay's pacing, and how he really only highlighted the action and what was going on, while also adding humour.

The current casters are alright most of them can describe what is happening very well, but none of them can give great insights in the game strategy wise. Maybe ddk stands out a little.

I find the 2GD hate very appalling and cuntish anti-fanboyism because he moved onto another game. No other commentator has played on his level and has such an in-depth commentary and knowledge of the scene/players.

Sorry, but, C O O L L E R just isn't that special, lately.
Spartie is too inconsistant.
The Aussies will be lucky to see top 6, I think.
k1llsen hasn't played much lately, from what others said around ESR.
Twister can do top 5 if he's on(I hope!).
strenx will choke.
fazz will give amazing comebacks but not win.
p0ni will be my darkhorse pick that I will cheer for(hue hueheu, puns) but I don't think he will get far.
The rest are just spot fillers.

May I ask, where have you seen Dahang play at, recently? He is from the US, no? Just curious is all. I really want to cheer for him because he uses Crash(my favorite!), but, I've not heard/seen much about him in these last weeks. In fact, not much of him since QC. D:

I suppose it is possible that I have not seen American online cups and he is quite good right now, but, is the competition as strong as EU players as a whole?

That's actually one of the things that worries me for Rapha and why I did not put him at #1 and, instead, chose to place him at #2 with the US scene not seeming as active and all.

As for recent games, I think that Cypher has played a bit better than Evil, lately, but I think that Cypher's inability to control his emotions will play a role at DHW.

Evil is just a cold fish when it comes to staying calm and that's why I put him above Rapha, combined with that I think EU training partners give a better chance of being well-prepared.

Eh well, previous dreamhacks tended to have terrible signups. I think they had to scramble and find whoever was around and picked up random swedish players and even got cooke to play.

Just go Mojo, dreamhack's a big event and you'll probably enjoy yourself even without playing.

After first wave of signups I thought I would, but after 2nd I was sure I wouldn't.

As much as I want to go and watch, my motivation to go has dwindled to go a bit. And I'm sure people will drop out and spots will need to be filled but my desire to practice is non existent anymore. Besides, I wouldn't be practicing to win, I'd be practicing to lose less :]

Plus, saving money is always a good thing. Still don't know what I'm going to do.

I know it''s not an ideal solution but the likelihood is a few players will drop out, so it's worth flying in if you've already bought tickets - even if players don't drop out it's a lot more fun spectating live.

That said I imagine motivating yourself to train when you don't have a spot guaranteed will be tricky : /

Stermy unfortunately seems way too busy working with esports nowadays to be playing Quake anymore, but yeah Stermy will be missed since he always adds some sick clutch moments in tournaments

Genuine question that I'd like to ask you(or whomever)!!::

Did they stop because of things that happened with their casting or did they stop because TDM and CTF stopped having as much to cast?

I would LOVE to try out TDM and CTF. As things stand(in US), it is very hard for me to find a duel at my skill level. I currently have played 1 ranked duel on my current main account(not flocks, but a different QL name). I have never seen a TDM or CTF match that looks remotely close to something that the players on either team would allow me to take part in. =(

Playing against bots doesn't really do much in the team modes. Even in CA, bots are only so-so because if their favorite gun runs out of ammo, they just fucking jump around and don't even shoot at me!!

I would love to learn how to play TDM or CTF the proper way, but, there's just never any games, let alone ones that I would not be kicked from immediately for lack for 4000000 elo rating(ie: no experience). D:

Disrepute stopped because he's too busy, no idea if he will have the time again. I stopped because streaming on your own is unbelievably boring. We could cover TDM again if Disrepute was able to find the time, or if I could find anyone else to stream with, which isn't likely.

You're just unfortunate you're in the US, the chance of your team scene ever reviving is close to zero I'm sorry to say.

Yeah, I understand what you mean about the team scene. It's kind of disheartening. I wouldn't mind so much if the public servers with team modes were busy with stuff besides just CA. CA can get boring, sometimes. Plus, the t4 community is pretty volatile. I am only t3 and very much would like to improve to hold my own with the really good end of the t4 players. For some reason, the mid to low t4 skill level players seem to think they are of a skill level that the pro duelers are at and it's very frustrating to be berated every time someone misses a rail.

It's not even just me. I've played a couple games with 2100+ elo players and the 1800's all acted like he's the worst player, ever, if he missed a single shot. =(

I have heard it is similar in TDM and CTF except that, when there is the rare game to be played, they spend a very long time yelling about what map and who is on what team and eventually that a lot of folks got tired of all that drama and just stopped playing those modes. I've not ever witnessed that part, but, it seems quite a few have discussed it, in the past.

Yeah absolutely sick tourney. It's one of those rare occasions where the top 4 could be easily filled by 8 different players and it wouldn't even be a crazy upset. And if we look at the top 16 anyone could make it with some luck.

I'd rather call a bad taste to support players who ruin game being spectacular by defensive cowardy back+ style. Its like supporting Chelsea in football when they put 10 ppl in defence as they tend to do in important matches, if we make such an analogy. At the same time i wish all participants to be at their top level too so only the real best wins this one.

it kinda looks like that tox's ball (hopefully temporarily) retracted. cause he plays really passive. I know that he tries to emulate rapha and other save players; but at times he even surpases them, whereas he really does have that 'aim' to back up the agression, and he should be there for an item or dealing damage. oh well, hopefull once he is pleased with his patience level the ball will drop again. But yeah, from "almost there" cathegory i would rather pick guard, fazz or even ph4ntom ;d

it's so frustrating to see so many talented (quake) players struggling to attend to the most awesome LAN event of the history of forever. Cypher said on his tweeter that he's hoping for an sponsor to pay him the expenses for the trip. I have no idea how much is that; I am not gonna ask him not to buy kush for a while so he pay that himself while LoL players are earning a living for the rest of their life having less years of gaming experience into a less skilled-demanding game...

Plain unfair imho.

Some thoughts about seeds.

I made a quick seeds by myself, here it is (it's not really much thought through, I post it as mainly as an example*):

I. Rapha, Cypher, Evil, DaHang
II. Tox, Strenx, Spart1e, Av3k
III. K1llsen, Cooller, Kook, Fraze
IV. P0ni, Dem0n, Fazz, Sting
V. Matr0x, Twister, Ph4ntom, Bpatela
VI. Sothis, Camma, Detrony, Fire_bot
VII. Etty, Laskij, Sl1p, KRoniC
VIII. Aeol, Zeun, Plazmaistar, Gienon

Then one player of each group is drawn to A, B, C or D group.

During deciding where to put players, I realized that for example switching K1llsen with Av3k, Matr0x with Sting, Gienon with Laskij don't matter much IMO. Let's look at the latter - Gienon will have to play, let's say, Plazma instead of Etty. Chances for him are pretty much even in both matches. For me there are certain areas where one up/one down change doesn't affect players and other where it changes things considerably (switching DaHang with anyone from II, Sting with Twister).

Another thing - is there going to be a draw actually? I mean something like in football world cup. Such event could be even streamed (I'd love to see this being discussed in chat live :D).

we're aiming to get the groups out about 2 weeks before the tournament. Should leave enough time to do research on the players. It's groups of 8 players so I think it's fair to give about 2 weeks :)

I personally don't have any time to manage them. I think it would be needed to keep them outside of the Dreamhack organization since if they'll pay it it will count as salary which means taxes, which means that the donations would disappear rather quickly.

So I don't really know how to push this forward. Any suggestions?

Paypal applies a 2.4% fee on every transaction below 5k. Hence, what really matters it's the overall sum of donated money, and the fact it's gonna have two overall transactions (from donors to me, from me to players, i.e. 4.7% fee).

I made a few scenarios:
- 100$ => 28 players get 3.4$ each.
- 300$ => 28 players get 10.2$ each.
- 500$ => 28 players get 17.0$ each.

To be honest, it looks to me this is quite little money for the players, compared to quite a large donation pot. What do you think?

Agreed, but 28 players? i would start with 4 players, if donations go higher than certain threshold, make them 6, then 8, etc. Top8 with this lineup deffo has to get some monies, so assuring that first step would be awesome, rest is icing on the cake. A $2000 pool would mean $500 for each 5/8th place. I would feel ashamed if top8 get any less than that with this lineup.
