couldnt have put tox back while i was there? :P good its back...but dm6 was the map to drop and not silence, silence is a way forward for quake, dm6 is a way backwards.

I don't understand why dm6 should still be in a modern mappool. But since it is, I have a very good excuse not to play these cups.

I forgot to mention something:

According to www.quakehistory.com some stats:

Faceit season finale: dm6 - 2 times played, silence 1 times played hektik 3 times played

Also speaking about Silence, colors are part of the map style and i realy like it. And a lot of other people like the green atmosphere i think.

aerowalk is the most popular custom map in qw and part of the main 5 maps. ztn is only more popular in russia and with the q3/ql crowd :p

iirc ztn released two of his maps for quake3 a bit earlier than hubster did the aero remix, but in the end both maps have been played endlessly in the past.

Well, it took more than a year of shoving t7 in player's faces in every tournament until people even began to accept it not as a joke. And now it is almost universally considered as one of the best maps.
Which means that even best players need hundreds of games to judge a map properly.

I heard of dropping: but I will never reach the "pick-phase" so I will always have to drop. and since there are 4 maps, which I don't enjoy playing in the pool (including dm 6 in first place) and only 3 I enjoy playing, I usually end up playing a map I don't like. I don't say that im "bad" on those maps. I just don't like them.

Because players asked for a change in color, as well as it being at the bottom polls.

Giving good games or not isn't really that much of a criteria of being in or out the pool. There have been great games on most maps, but we can't add all of them.

There will always be people who don't like the map selection. If we removed DM6 we'd probably get more comments (judging from the polls). It might suck for you this way, but we can't please everyone unfortunately :(

So there were polls and silence was on the bottom of it. Ok. I analyzed 9 faceit sunday cups and hektik was LESS played than silence. How many cups were in the winter season? I don't remember. Maybe I should add all of them and see if the stats change.
But how many times a map is probably more reliable than polls.

I also would love to do these kind of stats with data only on bo1 matches. And also look stage by stage which maps are the most played, which could say more than just this. But I dont have the data.
Anyway.
You are doing a fine job roychez. I'm not complaining about that. I just don't like this decision at all. Besides that I have nothing (major) to complain about regarding faceit.

Read above. I don't like 4 maps in the pool. If dm6 was replaced with silence i'd enjoy playing 4 (not equal beeing good at). Which would make the cup far more enjoyable for me since I could for sure play one of them since I can vote out 3.
And I won't even start about how bad I think dm6 is as a map.

imo yes... even though I think ztn or dm13 are good maps in their ways, if you are overwhelmed by a map- change every decade, you're simply not a good duel player.
Pro players should be role models and start playing new maps, showing us that their skill isn't only based on repetition, playing the same map for 10 years.

Removing Silence is the wrong decision and the reason is stupid in my opinion, because if you dont see the enemy you can simply change the color of the model. You could argue the same way that people who use the color of a different map they cant see the model.

It may improve it, but my suggestion also improves it. I think it is the wrong way to do this, because i think they would have done it already. Maybe I'm wrong (I hope so).

To the second point, the problem is that it is/was the newest map by a big margin and most people doesn't want to learn new maps and with this decision you encourage them.

Note: This is my opinion to it and I can understand why you do this and I like what you are doing (with some exception concerning maps)

A very good and fair mappool. dm6 should be in always (just like the other oldskool maps) because it gives awesome matches alltimes.

If you take effort in learning new map - why don't you take effort in learning what has been proven the best? You do not throw out Quantum mechanics from a textbook in favor of some fancy Ether theory or smth (you just check those new theories for fun and analytical approval/disapproval;)).

The oldskool golden mappool consists of tactics-heavy perfectly balanced arenas (even t4 is much more tactical than hek and somewhat similar in that matter to tox), besides - any old arena is given a new birth after 6 to 12 months of not including it into competitions.

Seeing how newblood is kicking so much ass on the oldskool arenas lately, even on ztn, even against Russians - I just don't understand why there's so much whine like "they'll kick our pink asses here, Roy, remove it plz, Roy". Whiners r gonna whine, but it won't help them no matter what map they play. FUCK whiny bitches.

You better get hardcore, oil your rockets, cells and uranium slugs, contenders, as we have an epic QL season to fill with blood, Gorre and gibs extravaganza:).

What about -dm6 and +sinister?

They are pretty similar in many ways and the sinister cups brought some great games to watch (and play for that matter...)

Also, like has been said here already, it gives another new map a chance in the map pool, which SHOULD be happening anyway with a 7 maps to choose from.

With new maps like Sinister we go through the process of adding them to the Daily Cups first to see if it's successful or not.

The only issue there is people only pick and eliminate maps to counter the person they are playing, and because not many people have played Sinister enough times to have an advantage over someone, it doesn't get picked.

The only reason nobody has played it enough to have an advantage on Sinister and other unplayed maps is because they haven't been forced in to the map pool.

Nobody likes change, it's human nature. But for how many more years do we have to see dm6? :P

thats a failed system... lower tiered players want to play what the pros play. its been this way since the begining. ive been very glad that faceit seemingly introduced a new way to progress the game, and that was in my eyes the repeating seasons that would finaly force players to play new maps and get used to new maps each season.

According to roychez players themselves decided to keep it out of faceit because of the color scheme.

Campgrounds is back because players themselves decided that. Some years ago the same happened with ztn, with very positive results.

Silence is a far choice map than campgrounds.

New maps give top players the ability to create new moves, new attacks and new traps. Those are the things that make games exciting and those novelties are missing in old maps.

Sad to see Silence go but if that's what people agree on because of the color I'm fine with it.
It'd be nice to see Faceit host a daily cup once a month with a more unusual map pool (i.e. Sinister, Silence, t2, Phrantic) to allow people to keep discovering the maps and bring play on them to a new level.

Silence is not my only duel map and I can assure you that none of my other ones use overly green textures. I'm looking forward to getting those playtested in QL.

I think it's not a bad idea to keep playing those maps. I.E. after the Sinister cup people decided they don't like the map although even the top players still made so many positioning mistakes on it.
Once akm and yellack look into rethinking the initial spawns I could see gameplay on the map evolving.

Personally after playing the SInister I decided I loved the map!

As you said, the only real issues are regarding spawns, mainly in the RA room, you are just too exposed without any way out if you get the 25hp bubble spawn, but it wouldn't take much work to get the map into a good standard for competition.

I've tried it and it looks not as good as on hub simply because of the map's texturing which differs. Generally, I think I could make other colors work but I'd need to retexture most of the map. I've tried blue, darker/brownish green, orange, purple (yes seriously) and even black. Nothing really made me happy.

Of course other colours would work - there are other maps with coours that work, thus another colour could work on silence.

The image you linked looks fine. Not as good as green but perfectly fine. You as a mapper should take the player input and adjust the map accordingly.

Or, just retexture it. Noone plays with textures on in a meaningful way ..

Fucking sad if the reason it is not played because it is green. If that turns out to be the reason then you have failed.

Since I asked them to re-consider, then yes, I think it's better than every map part from T7 in the current map pool. T7 has become very accepted and also therefore played, so more people have a higher awareness on this map. Therefore it's currently better in my opinion. Silence is a more fun map to play though :)

If all these maps were released at the same time and we all were new to the maps, then I would have to come up with another answer. But just taking the fact that some of the maps we currently use have been used since the beginning of Quake 3 (not even Quake Live :), then I would use Silence above dm6,dm13,ztn and aerowalk everytime. The map is great and most people don't even know it yet!

I gotta agree. If we didn't have any new good maps bringing dm6 back would be an option to consider, but although dm6 was producing some great games so did the silence. I think there is a need for change of mentality. Let's not be hasty to throw out the old maps, but let's not go 14 years backwards right after making a decent step forwards which i think adding silence was. Let's do ourselves a favour here.

I love quake and the classic maps.. but 10+ years of the same maps in tournies?

there has to be some step forward. why is making a good duel map so hard? its almost comical revisiting the scene and seeing maps from quake 1 still played on the 5th quake game almost 20 years later. of course this proves how great the maps are but come onnnn.

id personally like to see "sinister" from ut3 remade. so-so game but that was uts closest map to ztn imo.

Instead of good/bad? On the contrary, everyone has its opinion on which maps are good or bad. I don't know why it's not discussed as often; it might be because it's very subjective. But it doesn't take away the facts that :
1. Maps have an age.
2. This age has an influence on how long the map has been played and viewed.
3. This "how long" has an influence on the skills of the players (on this map) and the excitement factor of both players and spectators.
4. Many people are of the opinion that choosing a map which gives everyone a fresh start boosts the chances of newer players and that it's good to do so for the health of the community.
5. Many people get bored of playing or seeing the same few maps over and over again.

This is why age matters on top of if the map is good or bad. I may add that your final statement is an opinion ("no good map was created in last few years") I do not share.

4. no. it doesnt work that way. cooller needs 10 matches to know how to play a map, while [insert random semi pro here] will need 100 matches. remind me who was in the final of sinister duel cup? surely some new faces.

Am I the only one who doesn't give two shits about the mappool, just wanna see great games played?

I think all maps are awesome: dm6, dm13, ztn, aero, tox, hektik, silence, sinister, t4, t7, t9, battleforged, dismemberment. I like the fact FACEIT changes the pool every season, and we also have 125fps, Corsair, and one-off cups, each with a slightly different mappool.

I wouldn't make a big deal about Silence being out for spring. It's still there in 125fps, and might be back for the summer season in FACEIT as well.

Your way of view is nice of course and I agree to some extent and this is the main thing. All of these maps are great and have been proven to be for many years. This is at least not my argument and I still enjoy to play them from time to time.

However, if you always use the same maps in particular old maps that have been played a +thousand times each / player, then the scene becomes very stagnant and the above average+pro players will not really have anything new to train for. When new maps arrive that are good and then also used in tournaments? Then at least I personally feel more motivated to play and try the new maps. Gives me a reason to play.

Not to mention new players... How are they going to have an motivating chance to play these maps against players who have been either played them a few thousand times or for countless years. Of course you will now point out a few exceptions that are 'new' to the scene, but it's for sure not a motivating fact for a new player to think that he has to catch up on +8-10 years of experience within any reasonable amount of time. New maps makes things more interesting for new blood as well.

If you announce a tournament with that includes dm6,ztn,dm13,aerowalk... then I personally have no reason or motivation to start 'training' these maps @ 2013 :)

Not sure if my explination makes sense, but at least it's partly how I see it.

I think FACEIT do a really good job but excluding silence is really shit. Silence is currently one of the best maps and talking about graphics as excuse is ridiculous. I use green enemy model and it's not at all a problem tbh....
Maybe FACEIT don't want a change on the map pool to make sure that top players still playing the cups. I mean, as top players like cypher or cooller aren't training new maps, by dropping dm6 or ztn it will change everythink for them. Can they still win with a disadvantage map pool (for once) ? I'm curious and not sure at all.
It's boring to follow the same maps since more than 10 years, I think a change of some maps are really useful to still make QL interesting to watch and play.

What about putting t9 back on mappol? I mean, it's been out for 2 years so why don't give it a chance to come back as one of the most played map? I'd really prefer to drop out dm6/ztn/dm13 and put back t9 and even let silence remain on mappol, I'd even try out to add battleforged and dismemberment cause they weren't bad at all....

most viewers considered t9 to be fun to watch + it had some very interesting style with its 3way teleporters and 3 yellows. sure it was a spamfest sometimes but it was still very unique and still worked well in duel.

fuck those old maps, no offense, but they are so boring to watch. i've probably played and watched those maps probably over 600 times for each map, theres just no excitement anymore when i watch stream or even play it for myself, its just rutine in my opinion. with new maps like sinister, silence, maybe even battleforged or windsong keep, it might be way more exciting to watch the streams . ppl just dont agree with it, because they are afraid they suck on new maps or are to lazy to learn new maps.

Lol, I remember that sinister tourney. First time people used the stream chat seriously and the discussion turned out to be better/more entertaining than the games.

It's just too damn big/open, especially at RA. 10 min of two guys spamming rockets halfway across the map at every entrance and peek railing.

What about Concrete Palace ? Last DH Summer I interviewed rapha and he said the map cool be pretty good if some changes were made. I don't know if anything has been done about it.

Poor Faceit, it's not their fault id doesn't make great new maps.

People who think changing every old map is a good idea just because it's old can't expect the map pool to be new & fresh in a game where hardly any new maps get released that are worth even trying to duel on.

Changing map pools on a regular basis is great in a game like StarCraft 2 where there are new maps released all the time and they even get balanced all the time until they become inactive. But in QL? We don't have a choice to stick to the golden oldies like ZTN & DM13 (which are actually both great) because we have nothing else to pick from.

And if there was ever an organization that could actually make id do something, it is Faceit.

I only agree in certain parts.
You can't have a 7 maps mappool with good maps and all are new.
There are only a hand full of "good" maps which are "new" and are good. And there are "newer" and "older" maps. So if you have an equivalently well BALANCED map you should chose the newer one.

E.g. if you want a 3 maps mappool with a fast a slow and a middle map you can go with aero, hektik or tox as a fast map and I think aero would be the most boring choice. While in the slow (very slow?) maps area I don't see an equivalent to dm13. But T7 is fine aswell so chose that one. etc.
and again you won't get 7 new maps with that but I don't see whe a totally fine map like silence should not be in a pool while there are ztn, dm13, aero and dm6 in the pool which I have seen like 1 million times already and are boring to spectate and to play.

yes it's time to retire, when I see players with 32% ztn, 27% t7, 20% dm13, 9% aero and 5% dm6 which makes 95.77 of their games, and yet they still have a "strong" and "well informed" opinion about new maps.

b) Hence I rarely play the new maps, which I don't like.

Sounds a bit circular to me.

As a result(?!?) of this you advocate that better players also should not play on those maps and are happy if they are removed from tourneys, which you don't take part in. You don't even want to spectate those maps. You don't want to come near those maps. You like to spectate the same 5 maps for the next 10 years when finally QL will have gotten to the status where qw is today. No streams, no events, 5 maps. Glorious fights on ztn all night long.

Surely you will hold up the flag of QL by then and host LANs in your backyard, pay the top 10 to fly to your place and see the highest form of mindgame evolve, which can only come from playing the same map for 25 years straight.

The thing is you have problems on bigger maps in general and I once even gave you an advice on how to play on ztn and you were like "lol I know how to". I started playing duel somewhere around 2003, so no I did not start with QL.

I think i really know how ztn should be played, but in general duels I chose not to, because Its not fun for me to play +back on a casual level.

I don't remember your advice on ztn, beeing crushed by no_il usually tends to be cause I get frustrated and play +forward only after 1:0.

3 percent dm13 played and there was this game called q3.

Mappools should only be questioned if a questionable map has been added (questionable meaning universally regarded as a bad map).

Mappools should change more often. If a certain map doesn't appear in a mappool, it should pass by unnoticed, not cause a shitstorm. If your idea of the ideal mappool does not coincide with the mappool... DON'T GIVE A SHIT. PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR. LIKE YOU DON'T CARE.

remove dm6, have 6 maps. 3 fast 3 slow (or whatever you want to call the differences).

Instead of discarding till one map left, use cointoss to pick the last one.

Done, no more dm6, no more unbalanced (more fast/slow) map pool.

- Bo1: Player A (player labeled as "host" in match-up), elims first map, Player B elims second, repeat until one map is left.
- Bo3: Player A elims first map, Player B elims second, Player A picks map, Player B picks map, cointoss to select last map.
- Bo5: Player A picks, Player B picks, Player A picks, Player B picks, cointoss to select last map.

ALL the maps in ql duel are already dull as fuck, its pointless to argue if tox is newer than ztn when tox is already old as fuck aswell etc. all these cups are just dull repetations with very small variations, duel needs a completely new map pool and a steady flow of maps into it. i still watch it cause i really like quake but arguing about which single maps (where both of the maps are already old) should swap places is IRRELEVANT when we need 10 new duel maps to make it interesting

- 1 player being against Silence color (surprise, it's Guard, the only person ever to actually complain and the only person ever to post a screenshot with retarded picmip+overbright+enemycolor settings, just to prove his point that a config like that is possible, ha!)

- 1 player being happy that the color will change

- 7 players defending current color scheme (make that 8 with me), that includes SyncError who I'm pretty sure has better idea about what map problems people report :)

Clearly roychez's quest for changing the color has support in the community ;)

Fine with the maps. Tennis,soccer,baseball,football, ect all don't change the fucking fields they play on.

Who cares, I don't find it stale, but I would like to see new maps because of variety.

Like when I fuck random chicks even when I have a hot girlfriend. I don't hate my gf, I just want some fresh snatch once in a while.

the difference is that most times when k1llsen rails is when it is safe to rail or the enemy wont be able to kill him if he misses. Twister just shoots rail at anytime, it's pure stupid. It's not calculated risk or anything.

cooller got lucky on t7 with the 2hp rail, but it was mostly reading the fuck out of cypher over and over again. it's not like he had a bad lg before...

i'd say that he just had a fuckload of a burden playing vs cypher, cause cypher ALWAYS beats him. guess he finally managed to ignore that and play his game.

Yeah, if something doesn't fit into your model of the world, it definitely isn't a problem of wrong model, it just means that it's a "fluke week" and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Coller raping the undisputed champion of just finished faceit series is proof that cypher is best player ever - that is your meaning of being real?

Of course, best players not always choose to win. Cooller plays much higher level game than just winning or losing some tournament. Sometimes, for example, he wants other player to win to demonstrate some point or just of being very kind and generous. I.e. imagine if he always won all cups, then it would be debatable whether cooller is best player, or just that he is medium player, but all others are skillless noobs, and he wins among them just based on their low skill, not on his high skill. So he needs to set the stage for himself to show that his competitors are really players of highest caliber, that's why he has to let them win sometimes and gather many titles, to crush them later when they are not nobodys but respectable grand masters of Quake with many regals. Or other times he knows that his opponent is in difficult life situation and needs those prize money, so he lets him win it. Etc, etc, it's very complex story.

Also, he used technical handicap in past years, like wrong mouse and bad monitor, imprecise chair height, etc, because winning with perfect setup was too easy for him. So he built up some challenge. But he knows that people are mostly dumb and only thing that matters for them is who won or lost, so for those people he decided that he today once plays with his normal skill and setup, without handicaps and hidden meanings, just to let those people, who were worrying that cooller's fire might have burnt out, to know for sure that he still is and never ceased to be the best player ever.

I am serious man! You handicap yourself in some situations! Maybe not every game, maybe it matters even more rarely, but it fucks you up for sure sometimes and that can be the diff from winning tournament or losing even at semis!

I really liked this weekend. The mood in the studio was relaxed and happy, the weather was warm and sunny, everybody seemed cool and ready to start a new season. I'm not sure this was perceived at home, but it really helped me feeling at home.

My apologies for talking too much. Not making excuses or anything, but I think it boils to lack of exp: i got nervous a couple of times (cooller's interview, some dm13 matches) and my brain started farting, talking an talking.

About cooller's performance today (matches and interview): it was incredible, I could not believe my eyes. So good to hear him happy about playing, especially compared to the sad mood of his retirement interview. Again, sorry for talking too much there (no one should ever interrupt cooller talking). His answers hopefully made it up for my sloppiness.

In general, thanks for the feedback. I will watch the vods and try to do better next time, should i co-cast again. Any kind word is a boost to my motivation. And huge thanks to Faceit, and especially ddk. A pleasure to work with you!

memento_mori, I really loved your casting today, the few bits I had to hear, really. You had some great tips to give and I, myself, have taken notes of some of your advices. I really enjoy it everytime you get to cast because you bring in something new. I did not notice, when listening to the vod part of cooller's interview (because I got hinted cooller talked about me so I was like woop woop lets listen to the master) that you 'talked too much'.

You were great and I'm looking forward to hearing more of you casting and improving doing it so.

I only watched the grand final, but I have to say that you are very enjoyable as a caster. You provide some great insights and I absolutely did not think that you interrupted Cooller when you interviewed him.

People need to realize how hard it can be to interview someone via skype, phone, whatever, especially someone who doesn't have English as his main language and needs the small pauses, that can sometimes be confused with an actual ending of an answer. :)

It was the most enjoyable Sunday cup for me so far! You did absolutely great (huge improvement from last time to be certain) and it was very enjoyable casting with you good sir, I hope to see you back as soon as possible :D.

I personally don't think you talked too much, there were spots where it's maybe arguable-- but for me most importantly as your co-commentator, it never crossed a threshold where I felt uncomfortable so that's definitely fine in my book :).

What a tourney! Fuck my IRL, i missed it live. I watched a bit of the early matches, Bak vs P0ni, Dem0n vs QLR, Evil vs Matr0x and the finals.. Just 4 things to say:

1) Memento ROCKED, i liked his style so much, just get excited when it's worth it (even if he can't actually change the tone of his voice :D, whatevs!) and stick to analizing the most important happenings during the match. I prefer a guy who's trying hard on his first tries and maybe overplay 'em, over a guy who just won't step it up (hi CZM). Always being over-excited get's boring after a while, i like Memento's way a lot more if he steps up in the later stages as he did:

Best thing about his today performance: HE IMPROVED SO DURING THE EVENING!!!
He stopped missing some turning points while over analyzing what just happened, he talked a little less :DDDD, he sounded and was more comfortable, he reminded me of fuckin 2GD with his on point reading of the game! Dude i'm a fan now!!!!

This was one great show. Excellent commentary, excellent games. Specifically of course from cooller, who seemed to have rediscovered his own, cocky self of former times. The "choosing moments when to be aggressive" and dodging was just awesome today.

Just wanted to say even behind the production table where I don't notice a lot of the actual commentary and matches usually, I bloody enjoyed the casting by ddk and Meme, was brilliant, also some great games. And as always, chat was very entertaining :)

Also, critique (map pool this instance) is needed to keep improving, so thank you for that. But seeing people happy with what we produce keeps us motivated as well! Great to see the good feedback (both sides of the coin), keep it coming!
