#1: Working Anticheat - It's getting beyond ridiculous at the moment, and we can't really tell if the recent bans are because of verified cheating or not

#2: Revamp Subscription System - Remove the intermediate Premium accounts, make all maps, freeze tag, and domination available for Free To Play, and assign everything else under Pro Account (private servers, clan management, other game modes, enhanced stats, etc)

#3: Email confirmation for new accounts - The avalanche of fake accounts is also getting out of hand

#4: More regular updates - Instead of releasing new content in large heaps every six months, the community would appreciate smaller yet more regular updates. I'm sure this will make post-update-patches easier to handle too

#5: Nothing else... I'd be happy with just those changes for now. Although I would like id software to try and use the in-game advertising system to its full potential, those ad-banners don't really detract from the games aesthetic and would work really well. Ad more in-game banners if necessary for fucks sake!

Edit: I saw a good idea floating around, online co-op support for fighting against bots. This is the ideal way for a couple of newcomers to test out QL in all it's glory without getting sodomized after 3 minutes.

#3: actually, I think, that if there will ever be good working anitcheat, then people should be able play with no registration at all, it just makes it more streamlined for new people trying out the game. And do you really care, whether you play against username1 or username2, or that they may be someone's fakes, etc?

The fact that I detest fake faggotry aside, it's also standard practice to make sure the user has introduced the correct email incase he / she later forgets the password.

The problem is you can't fathom that most people are so much better than you while having so much less time played. So old FPS players who are new to quake are almost certainly going to be railing well with shitty movement.

We've unfortunately had to ban dozens of subscribers for cheating in the past couple of months. A subscription will not protect you from getting banned if you're cheating.

On a scale of 1 to 100, how accurate is your cheat detection system? I other words, what is the margin of error? In other other words, what are the chances that someone will get wrongfully accused of cheating?

Seeing as id carefully evades any concrete talk about anti-cheat, I suspect that it's something like id admins manually spec reported players with shownormals enabled and make their best guess.

Your suspicion isn't good enough for me. Also, there have been many reported cases of Syncerror joining a server and kicking someone after just a few seconds.

Well they have a great system in place. You pay 12 months at a time. They get their money anyway.

By banning paying subscribers they get the best possible result - they get their money and have the opportunity to create a better gaming environment for all the other costumers.

You could pay beyond twice the cost of a premium account for a triple A POS COD/BF title that no one will play a year hence...you know...when the new generic iteration comes out...and you moronically shovel another 60 bucks out of your pocket for it . There are things bugging people about QL, but to pretend you aren't getting value is ridiculous. It's the most competent FPS to date, tightest gameplay, available free OR more if you want. If you WANTED the more that they offered, what are you angry about? 2 prem subs guaruntees you 2 years of access with money to spare in comparison to AAA titles with poor mechanics that publishers intentionally kill yearly just to sell the EXACT same game in time for next christmas.

QL is not a rip-off, it just isn't what we all know it can be.

1. Implement "defrag" mod, with community's maps and ladder system.
2. New options of payment for premium/pro (like paypal, or smth).
3. Fix the site code... there is so much bugs and it's so annoying.
4. Add real anti-cheat! It's really needed!
5. Work on the interaction with the community and add new, better tutorials for new players!

All i want is a good new maps provided by community. They should make some test servers where we'll be able to choose them for further adding to the game, 1-2 maps every month maybe.

1. Remove dm6 from free to play, remove more from free to play. The idea that so many people have played for over a month of gametime and still don't seem to think that this game deserves their support is ludicrous.
2. Release a devpack for mapping. Allow pro users only to host servers with a custom map rotation ( of uploaded maps ). the framework is almost entirely extant currently. This would be sure to bring back more of the purists.
3. Return QL to a true program client. Keep the web frontend separate. Although this is entirely unlikely, it would remove so many problems from development and play.
4. Fix the unlagged netcode. Although I'm not going to be one of the serial whiners, I'd like to see some improvements in this area.
5. Add more features for clan management, the current clan system is poorly supported. It seems almost an afterthought.

That was somewhat in jest, but I think you get the point right? Every account given by id software has suggested that the F2P model alone is not working to sustain QL. Players are given too much for free.
I'm a paying user, and I think it's a real shame that the prem maps are so seldom played in pub play. It's only duel and PUG CTF/TDM where you get a chance at playing them on AUS servers.
Instead of players feeling like they're missing out by not being able to play with the paying members, it's the other way around.
In order to have a decent FFA game, you have to go pub and play the same 4 maps over and over again.

Nowadays QL doesn't need devs really. The things it lacks aren't still in the game because of the company's policies.
Lets say they relax those a bit. QL would have defrag, ra3, cpm, osp, ladders and matchmaking (qlranks), hundreds of new maps, featured streams (liveql), lan servers, added functionality from great greasemonkey scripts, global chat (integrated irc or proprietary), etc. etc. Right now developers can't do any of those.

Well - I've always preferred the Doom franchise, but Doom 3 was a dissapointment, I started multiplayer gaming on Doom2 and that was fast and furious. Quake 3 was great but didn't have the "evil" atmosphere of Doom, so I was hoping Doom 3 would be like fast and furious Multiplayer like Quake 3/Live but with the Doom atmosphere. Instead it was a graphics heavy plodding 60 fps single player oriented game. If Doom4 comes up with what I hoped for Doom 3 then hell yeah! That would be great, but I think as far as Multiplayer deathmatch focus is concerned that will only ever be done on the Quake franchise - if at all...

Free to play should be limited to 1 best map per game mode e.g: CA: Campgrounds, Duel: Blood Run, etc. With different maps for these in Insta or PQL mode. All other maps, server spawn/config, enhanced stats etc should be Pro accounts only and the Premium account should be scrapped. Subscription payments should be payable via Paypal.

2. Community map functionality:
Functionality for Pro Members to upload a map. These would have to be tested against certain minimla technical and other criteria by QL Devs and then placed on a test map server available to all Pro Members. The map can then be scored via the players' game account on the web page with options to supply detailed feedback in text form on specific areas such as item placement, textures, lighting etc. The map author can then make updates based on feedback, uploading a new replacement version when they're ready. The score being reset to 0 with each update. If after 3 months the map does not score above an agreed feedback score it will be removed by the QL Devs. If it scores above a certain agreed feedback score, then QL devs will take the map in hand to clean it up and ready it for transition to standard server map rotation.

So players can enable or disable as they choose. Also enable a "/block PlayerX" for voice comms to prevent verbal abuse by some idiots (we know who you are).

1. That's too much, though I agree some current f2p maps should be premium just to earn some cash (ztn for example, which is justifiable now that they reworked the spawns) and overall sell more content and features.

Well they're my 5 wishes however unrealistic and I think they'd improve things alot.

For (1) I think the free to play should be as tasters only, so the best example of each game mode should suffice and will let more people try out the current premium game modes whenever they like.

I gather that they're scared of being sued for infringing intelecutal property rights, yet Sh*mania and other games have map making as part of their game without the legal concerns ID have... (1) is more of a personal preference thing, but the rest simply will never happen because they take an insane amount of work for very small things (2, 3 and 4) and the company expressly refuses to do some of them (2 and 5).

There aren't many games with integrated voice comm. Feel free to name 10 popular pc games that have it, as you say it's done in so many games these days. I could name 10 popular that don't have it.

LAN servers won't happen because they said so and it facilitates access to the game's client and servers, which has several problems. Current pc games don't feature it for a reason and I actually think it's justified.

And it isn't a huge problem anyway. Hosting an unofficial lan or online server is not that complicated and joining one is easier than using quakelive.com. It's no hidden info either.

Well sorry - I'm not much of a gamer really - I have only ever played ID games: Doom1, Doom2, Doom3, Quake, Quake2, Quake3, CPMA, Quake Live, but when I heard that games like WoW have in-built audio comms, I assumed it was now common in other games - my mistake. Still don't think it would be difficult to implement with the now common (verified lol) VOIP services... But I'm sure you're right it will never be implemented - I still wish for it however... ID have a good track record of implementing the least expected features so who knows...

qlranks tracks very few duels so it isn't a great source of information (alexa isn't either and google is not updated).
Also on the official forums people's been posting (with pictures) that there are more ca, tdm and ctf matches than before the update, using different maps and more premium servers too, so it's a win-win for every player. No info on duel though.

Make gametypes free. All the prem modes are dead, BUT, there were huge spikes in activity during free premium days. People flocked to check out the new shit, i mean a year or so ago you had more freezetag servers than ca servers for a while. I honestly feel free gametypes would attract more people than keeping them locked away.

Maps. I'm sort of on the fence on this one, personally i feel that they should rotate maps in and out of the premium zone while adding new ones on a regular basis, and making the old ones completely free after some set amount of time (a year since adding, maybe?). As is, most casuals couldn't give less of a fuck on which map they play, forking cash over for a few maps nobody ever plays on anyway is just not a very attractive feature.

Make stats premium only.

Make all match history premium only.

Limited friend list (or even no friend list at all), unlimited for subscribers + a filterable mail box.

Inability to send pm's and chat outside of a game without subscription.

Ability to change your in-game name at will.

Premium crosshairs, premium enemycolors (easy visibility ones, leave basic brightskins in place), premium post-process tweaks (like true b&w bloom setting etc).

Multi-config storage on-site, ability to swap them at will.

Premium macros (basically no vstr for non-subscribers).

I mean, you see my brainwave here, right? Basically move all the NON-ESSENTIAL stuff to prem. Move the core stuff to f2p. It works for other games, i mean in HoN and LoL you can play all heroes... eventually. Or just outright buy them if you want. In TF2 you can play all maps and modes, but can buy trinkets and other bs which can be helpful and make you feel good about yourself.

TF2 doesn't count since it was released as a payed game and then f2p with microtransactions when the game was already more than financed.
HoN and LoL don't work like that; they are just like every other game of that business model. 85% of heroes aren't available at all times, whereas in QL there are probably more standard maps than premiums.

They gave you the illusion of being free, but everyone who likes the game ends up spending money on it and a lot more than just $24/$48.
That's another problem of this game: not enough things to purchase. In LoL the most expensive skin costs $25 (yep) and about 33 champs cost $7.50 each. You can also buy rune pages, ip and xp boosts, nickname change, etc. I wouldn't feel cheated if they charge for ztn separately.

Like a month ago I did the math (it's posted here somewhere) and premium/pro users are less than 1% (think it was like 0.2% or something but can't remember), including accounts that ran out. That's sad.

Actually, yes and no at the same time. Most i ever do in QL is play CA on dm6, quarantine, hidden fortress and trinity. As is, there is zero incentive for me to buy prem/pro - i don't do pickups, i don't play other gametypes, even if one of the other prem modes/maps interested me, nobody plays them. So that's that. I would feel cheated if they charged for even what little good maps there are in the standard pool, UNLESS they'd rotate the maps in a way i described in my post.

As for LoL/HoN/TF2, i only drew the parallel to illustrate that you don't need that much to make people fork over cash, you just have to do it in a smart way. I don't think there can be any argument over the fact that the current prem content just don't cut it. So either move on over to paid mmo style model which would basically gut this game, or make non-essential but still very useful stuff into prem to give more incentive to subscribe. I think it's already too late for anything to work, but well, just wanted to share my opinion.

Slightly off topic but i used to believe ql dev team wasn't lazy, just understaffed. Then i asked myself why they havn't made ladders yet and i thought this was because their infrastructure were unable to handle such resources e.g. when sk gaming made a third party ql ladder but got shutdown because it lagged the stats page. Then qlranks popped up and the ql stats page still loaded instantly so obviously they have improved their infrastructure. Yet ID devs havn't built a ladder system when 2 quake players can create a fully functional ql ladder system while being fairly active in the game. What makes it worse is szr (one of the qlranks developer) asked the id team for help but they didn't respond and even try to block qlranks ip address which was collecting the stats information so the qlranks team has to use proxies to get these information.

I'm not sure what you mean with this. As far as I know, the main difference between SK approach and QL ranks approach is that, while the former tried to download all the information at once, the latter would dilute queries over time, reducing the load to id's server substantially.

Hmm i guess your right. I was speaking from my ass in that part. But it still doesn't explain why they can't do it in a resource efficient way like qlranks has. Maybe they don't want to make ladders until it's the the top of the line ladder system with many integrated features, who knows. But at the current state of ql its better to have something then nothing.

When you look at what the amateur QL enthusiasts have done in their spare time e.g. all the greasemonkey scrips to improve the web pages, QL Ranks of course, Demo Player, QL Demo Tools, better Huds, QL Prism etc - it really makes me wonder what the hell the QL Team (if there is one) at ID Software are doing really... Just sitting around getting high and telling their friends that they "work in IT" or they're "a software designer"... Bet they don't say: "but I don't do any work and I don't design shit..."

I might apply for a management position there and sack the lot of them, then recruit a team with some professinal pride or maybe just from the community and make a fantastic gaming experience :D

As a standard user, the game is very very very stale. The North American playerbase is already small enough, splitting it in two because of standard/premium is just extremely frustrating. All anyone wants to play is ZTN because that's all they can play.

Make all maps standard, and alter the prem/pro system into one. You can spawn servers, get additional stats and whatever sounds you want, but for the love of god stop splitting up this community. I can't even watch aerowalk or toxicity games because I can't get into the server.

I have to use QLPrism to block adds and add a proper ranking (QLRanks) into the game to make it even stand able. If I actually had to sit through a 30 second commercial for every time I connected to a match I wouldn't even login anymore. There is no fun in a free Quake experience to me, because it's just watching commercials, losing your spot in queue because of the commercial, and then playing aliasers/cheaters/assholes on ztn all day because no one wants to play anything else because the other decent maps are premium only.

I doubt any changes will be made so I'm not even sure why I'm writing this.

In eu duel is the only gamemode where current premium system works on pub servers. Above 1200 elo it's not hard to find a premium duel at all.
In other modes there are only pickups being played and entry skill level is way higher than prem duel which makes them more inaccessible (+ occasional pub CA with mixture of players from other gamemodes).

Btw what makes you thinks that releasing premium maps would make ppl turn away from ztn if they don't play t7 and dm13?

make ztn premium :). release some of the other premium maps (such as toxicity) into free to play.

Take most of the decent suggestions above, do NOT implement in ql. instead just use it all to make a new game. call it quake 5 or whatever. qls been around too much and gathered too much dust. resuscitating it is not going to gain us or id anything.

learn from the mistakes in ql, repackage the gameplay with a new, pretty engine, get everything right (or atleast the important bits) from the beginning, and for gods sakes add some content that would keep new players interested in the game long enough to get them addicted enough to learn.

At the 2011 Quakecon keynote QnA, Carmack said something to the effect of the high skill curve of Quake 3 being a major drawback of the game, rather than it's major success.
Quake continues to attract only the most battled and jaded of online gamers, people who found everything else far too easy, or downright unappealing. However, it drives just about everyone else away.
From a marketing perspective Carmack is entirely correct, but unfortunately we've all seen far too many examples of what kind of stupid products are born when capitalism and democracy alone dictate their direction. ( COD, and a fungal bloom of other team based 'modern warfare' games. )
As much as id are gods in the industry, I don't think that creating the most furiously difficult and elitist online fps was ever their intention, the style and level of play you see in Quake now is a product of a set of convenient physics glitches that were so exploited by clever players that they became de rigeur, coupled with an incredible competitive player base that constantly pushed itself to new heights...
I'm sure id consider the high standard of Quake's competitive play a remarkable success, but it was an accidental one.
The point I'm getting at is, I don't think we'll ever see a game like Quake 3/Live ever again ( excluding indie games that ape and clone it. )

Quake players arent designers and most dont understand the difference between a skill ceiling and a skill curve.

Quake has a high skill ceiling which is good but the curve is too steep by a mile. Quake design also skips the first part in the "A minute to learn, a lifetime to master" expression...


Quake could be changed to be easy to learn and decrease the skill curve and still continue have a high skill ceiling. They are not mutually exclusive.

An example of a high skill ceiling, low skill curve game is magic the gathering where even the better player rarely has over 75% chance to win a duel over an intermediate tournament player depending on context.

The esr crowd would whine a lot about the needed changes but that is often just a sign of success.

in SouthEastAsia, quake is almost dead here
Newbies just experience high pings and getting pawned by veteran players from australia or korea who most of course ping low to their server
even if some of the vets are nice to newbies, getting them in the game gets hindered by language barrier.

i think pay2win would just turn away the existing player base while hardly bringing in any new ones.

this kind of format or system is still tiered
if you pay2win you most likely tier up faster and eventually

mostly players who are into the game are the ones who will buy this benefits, and at the time they buy it they are mostly mid tier for entering servers and mid tier in their own skill

The day they do that is the day I stop playing Quake Live.

1. Let any player be able to access any game, and instead of restricting modes and content for free accounts, restrict time or number of games, or something like that. There is simply no critical mass to sustain non-duel games on premium servers.

2. Make useful match creation system similar to pickups, so that you can initiate for example "CA 4v4 on campgrounds" match, then if there are people online who like it, can join it, and when it fills up, server automatically spawns.

3. Adequate system for managing, recording and playing demos. I want seek bar like in any media player, I want to watch frags from enemy's POV, I want basic search and filtering to find, let's say rapha's demos on lost world where he lost, etc.

4. Multi-pov automatic server demos on LANs

5. Just god damn it do some advertisement/marketing for the game, how you expect it to succeed if you don't even tell anyone about it? There is not even mention of QuakeLive on idsoftware official website!

Game should either be free to play or not. With the current situation most of the premium content is wasted. Pickups and duel are the only places premium content gets any activity.

My suggestions is minimal free content, one or two maps per gametype, and only ffa, clan arena or freeze tag available. Otherwise QL should be f2p and based on micro-transactions and ads.

The one suggestion that is the most powerful, and would be the most effective (if done correctly) would be something brought up in game when I was chatting away to some ua players:

"Make open game to everyone make"

Let the community mold the game into what they want it to be. The community has come up with fantastic competitive mods and modes such as OSP, CPMA, defrag, RA3 for quake 3 and could easily do the same for QL.

Imagine what we could do to the game if they just handed over the reigns to us, and let arqon and ix head up a team that was funded by the subscription player base :)

We could have:

ALL the cpma features brought over (including the netcode and proper promode physics)
ALL the new maps made could be implemented so much quicker (bst2_b3 PLZ!!!)
A community vote into how we would like the subscription model to be changed so we would actually have a decent playerbase in all game modes.
Proper ladders with real PRIZEMONEY for all divs that is again funded by the subscriptions.

And so, so, so much more.

All it would take is for id to do one thing. That one thing that will never happen :(

I know there would be a lot of complexities and problems for the community to overcome if we were ever given this opportunity; however the devs in this community are awesome and passionate at what they do and I believe they would make it happen with the support of the community :)

How to make this all happen? Simply form a group of QL users who have extensive knowledge on how to make all this website shit work (see QLR) and sub the work out to them! Free!

It kinda makes me depressed to read this 2010 thread where Sync answers every post with positive feedback. They really wanted to add all requested features and it's a shame that QL dev team fell apart. Anyway, here are my top 5 wishes.


1. Defrag
Race, freestyle and practice.
For race, add a ladder for each map for both QL and PQL (similar to www.q3df.org) and make demos of the best times automatically available for download if possible.

2. Make Freezetag free
I'm sure there was no one who bought subscription in order to play freezetag. And from what I remember from OSP, freezetag was usually played by new and low skilled players so it's a nice mode for newcomers and should be free to play. And with all these new modes introduced recently, it's right time to release old one for free.

3. Make some older premium maps free
There's plenty of premium maps that nobody plays. Stick a few of them into standard servers and bring some fresh air into the game.

4. Ladder
This has been discussed to death. With accurate elo system like QLRanks, find a game feature could also be reintroduced.

5. Improved demo viewing
Serverside demos available for download, onsite demo launcher, multipov, rewind and forward functions, wallhack toggle enabled on playback etc

These are in no particular order.

1. Change the subscription model
Remove pro, only have premium and free. Make all maps free, freezetag free, but keep the other modes and things like server starting premium-only.

2. Payment options
Two years later and the only way of paying is still by purchasing a full year of premium, which for some people may scare them away from buying it. Have a 'monthly' option - more people would be willing to pay for this to first try it out before paying for a full year. Also, make PayPal a method of purchase.

3. Anti-cheat
This is pretty self explanatory. Cheating is bad, it makes the game less fun.

4. Community maps
Allow someone who starts a server to have community-made maps be played. Having this in combination with PQL and the newly expanded server customization would be warmly welcomed by everyone.

5. If possible...
Make Quake Live available to download on Steam. This has been discussed before and I'm not even sure if it's actually possible to do, but I think it would bring in a ton more players.

I agree about the steam option, especially if it's spammed everywhere as "FREE", however it might need some extra pre-availability hype, and QL has pretty much exhausted all the hype it's ever going to have.

I think it going on steam would be awesome and would attract quite a substantial amount of new players. However not and I repeat not for the love of bog in it's current state.

Fix it, polish it into a great game that it clearly has potential to become then go to steam.

QL - Rebirth!

Release Quake5.

Don't include any competitive features, just make it fun for casual gamers, and make it pretty with a new engine.

Make sure the engine gives people the option to at least get 125 fps on machines that were build a few years back.

Give the community a mod SDK in time, and let the community sort out competition features. This has always worked with quake.

10. the community should stop using low graphics configs on streams, it can only serve to detract from outside interest by making the game look more dated. the game looks better than any other game of its age, we should really take advantage of this.

edit: sorry it's more than 5, but I didn't post in the previous 2 years so I'm just making up for lost opportunity! :)

edit2: for the people suggesting defrag, I don't think it can make any sense for id software to put defrag into QL. For them to do it properly would incur huge amounts of work for little gain, defrag although glorious and awesome is very niche. Just stick to playing defrag in q3, it will never be matched.

10 is a good suggestion to some degree.

If the game gets promoted via stream and a random person, not aware of QL's full potential stumbles upon picmip 15, vertex and even more horrifying settings, he or she might misjudge what QL really is.

Surely once you get to know the game you disable many of those glossy motion blur and bloom effects, but as far as I know, there are several issues in regards to higher quality streams.

The majority of viewers are, obviously, quakers.
Quakers (I'm going to assume that most of them) do not wish to see an intense match with very high settings. Would be great to see people stomach it up and just enjoy the game in full detail, even if it's not similar to their own in-game settings; this move could potentially attract newcomers, instead of driving them away.

Then comes the streaming problem. Higher quality video also demands a higher/better connection for both the streamer and the viewers.

Just imagine a duel with full detail, no simple items, picmip 0 and possibly some bloom added with 240p streaming quality.

Or 360p.

Yes, this is why. It only works well in 720p or higher, which is impossible for a lot of people to watch due to connection requirements. I'd also argue that some maps look better with high picmip values, but thats just personal taste.

Just look at Malaka his fragvideo, he used picmip but it looked even better than normal quake in my opinion, way more slick, it had high graphics but high picmip.

That's because of video editing and such, you cannot achieve same graphics for in-game stream.

Yes, colors get blended and on LQ it looks like rubbish. Even if you're streaming 720p (1280*720) and the viewer puts it on fullscreen on his 1920*1200 screen, it will destroy a large part of the visuals because of the large difference.

Watch any VOD of nsx's stream (HoQ #2, is it?) It's 60 fps picmip 0 with bloom and shit. And it's BEAUTIFUL. Immersive. Just perfect.

It's also 3,5 Mbps. More than YouTube 720p (but of course YT is 30 fps).

Conclusion: any user that can watch 720p on YouTube without buffering, can watch a 30 fps beautiful stream.

Of course compressing such stream with good quality in a single pass needs a beefy computer. Which is why some people disable encoder features to make it faster and in effect produce shitty streams. That doesn't mean picmip 0 stream has to look bad.

The only remaining problem are people who can't watch 720p or even proper 480p at all. But have you noticed that Russian streams stopped offering 512 Kbps option lately? If they're dropping support for such shitty links, that means 2+ Mbps is available virtually everywhere now.

Yes, or streamers stopped giving a shit about -2Mbps. What you said about it being possible but needing a beefy PC is also true and I don't have that so with a little trickery you can make a stream look good enough. And less colors to stream, the more CPU-time for extra frames. The game needs to be rendered as well as you are spectating it. Extra visuals need to be layered in by XSplit, etc.

I kinda agree. I believe there is no way that id can satisfy us with a new quake game. Well moded Q3 is a peak of skillbased competitive fps gaming and games like that just aren't made anymore, because of change in demand. That being said I also believe that there is enough interest in community to justify putting some work into ql, polish the game and make profit on it.

While you can never please everyone, it has always been my opinion that there is a roadmap for creating a successful Quake 5 title that could be a huge success (including in the competitive scene).

Q4 and UT3 both attempted to reproduce gameplay from their popular precursors Q3 and UT99 in an attempt to please their existing fanbase, to carry the torch so to speak. My prime concern with that philosophy is that you ultimately cannot both innovate and repeat at the same time. It will feel like an inexact copy, and players will be let down that it doesn't hold up to their prior experiences (regardless of whether that opinion is based on valid reasons or nostalgia).

Even despite the similarities between Quake 1, Quake 2, and Quake 3, the basic health and armor systems and player movement varied between all three titles. The willingness to reexamine these basic systems between titles gave each a very much needed life of their own. Likewise, the strong points of Quake 4 were the places of innovation (projectiles through teleporters, grenades on bouncepads, trying out new and advanced movement systems).

You have to be willing to develop a sequel as something that stands on its own. Re-design the entire game from the ground up, taking lessons from your game design and desires from your community at heart, hoping to build something entirely new that will still be appealing to your original audience.

The path to a successful Quake 5 should be one that creates a new game where every game system is thought out and designed for that game in particular, creating something fresh and new. Not a Q3 reboot in a new engine.

The main recipe to fail that is proven to work 99% of times is when game designers start to confuse "fresh and new" with "better".
Not that you shouldn't try to redesign game completely from the ground up "where every game system is thought out", but the goal of this process of creating whole game anew should be to produce the best competitive game ever, not the most innovative competitive game ever.

#1 Change and clear all legal issues putting a strain on implementing already developed solutions to community queries as well to lan servers, tournaments, custom works etc.
#2 (comes from number 1) Get more involved with community work, ie. don't wait 2 years to implement a map done by frs or anyone else.
#3 (comes from number 1) Invest more money into promotion of quake as an e-sport FPS ie. support more broadcasting time on currently avail shows/bring in some incentive for new casters to appear.
#4 (comes from number 1) release a pro packet with a dedicated server side client for lans.
#5 revamp the subscriptions and gamemodes available to free users. Maybe even the site itself to include more of community based materials such as guides, streams etc (prism is a ridemntary example of what a company should be able to upgrade to a fancy type of client avail to pro or premium accounts)

I'm not a big supporter of GTV as viewership and following changed from 2000's into broadcasts, commercials, and supporting a community/game itself.

As for the rest this would break half the problems QL is facing and that are braking its development. It's just boring legal stuff that matters most!

Let the community drive the game: free work power + ton of extra benefits. How many years of great user dedicated content just for the love of the game have proven to work? Reward the people with mentions, prizes, tokens (not necessary though, but a good incentive). Let an administration team (current QL team) to draw the guidelines and keep everything together.

the problem, is despite the fact that QL has been run into the ground through endless mismanagement and horrible business decisions, it's still the "best" game that is still somewhat played. it's a goddamn tragedy that this is the best we have and will continue to have in the foreseeable future, because it could have been so much better. i honestly think it's better to cut their losses and at least TRY to generate some kind of demand for a new quake game, shutting down the shitty QL servers would be one way of forcing that.

We all have some grudges with QL, I'm pretty sure there's just a handful non-factors that consider the game perfect.

Shutting it down at this point would hardly do any good for the quake franchise. With all the new simplified and dumbed down shooters, QL needs to stay where it is and shove a punch to the face to all lesser shooters out there.

If you have a handful of e-pals that are willing to play with you and access to duels at any time of the day (I know the situation in NA is a bit dire, but don't tell me you can't find a duel because I always managed to find one) and a few LAN events here and there along with weekly online cups, that's all you really need at this point.

Crossing fingers that the next quake in series will take in account suggestions posted in this thread, revamping the old engine/subscription model and just get promoted enough while being supported by huge esport events.

i came to quake super late (my one regret) and ever since that, no game has ever lived up to my own expectation. quake has effectively ruined gaming for me because nothing will ever be as good as this franchise.

use a good map pool per season, have matches found based on your preference of servers, make cups from ladder leagues.

Drawgun is just streamers preference maybe because the weapons don't have firing animations in spec mode.

I think that the less pixels change between two frames, the easier it is to encode/transmit it and the better the stream quality can be.

well,i just played Quake 3 so,compared to qw,q2 and q3,the ql splash damage is way too much low,when the enemy is full stacked,slpash damage almost doesnt do anything,i knew that someone will say "your aim sux" or smth like that,but splash damage has allways been a part of the game since qw.

well the idea is to make splash weaker than direct hits I personally would like it a bit higher with a smaller radius but it's fairly balanced now at low pings ( assuming you play around 80ms ) mind you I don't have too much trouble with rockets at 150 ms ( it's still bad though ).

yeh but the hitbox in ql is too much big,making shots easy to get,but sometimes splash damage seem so low ( like making only 5-10 damage to the enemy) making the rocket luncher a kind of weak weapon compared to the other quake where the RL is one of the most powerful weapons,if not the most one.

errh sounds like your speaking opposites, QL has one of the smaller hitboxes in the quake series the splash damage is more suited to a balanced game where it shows who can excel at a certain weapon, but that low damage issue you have is something I rarely experience even with my 150ms because I firmly believe that it's my fault for mis-predicting.

And yes I do agree that rockets are weaker in QL than they are in the other quakes (excluding Q2) but it's nog weaker because it is low on damage it is weaker because of the hitscan anti-lag making lg a much more potent weapon, but the rockets in QL are the second fastest in the series, meaning you can +back like an absolute faggot with it.

but I still think it's just you and I don't recall YMH ( yojji ) complaining too much about this.

After idsoftware getting some kind of "success" with those new mappools forcing people to get premium and many user spawned servers popped up in the last few weeks compared to 3-4 month ago, what about getting one step further by introducing some kind of "teamfortress 2 - hat model"?

for example:
- offer a "gibs and blood-pack" with age verification just for this package for 2€
- introduce a classic qw or q2 weaponskin/textures/soundeffect-package for 5€
- "classic quake tdm mappack" remake to fit playstyle for ql of q1dm3/q2dm1
etc...

those packs you could buy would be linked to your account even your prem/pro account expires or you never subscribed.

If there are people who wanna play ffa all day long on free servers, why not give them an option to buy them some "gibs and blood-pack" or a "classic texture-pack" just for the atmosphere?

But the Hot Coffee mod for GTA San Andreas was a plain mod which was easy to install and NO form of extra age verification was needed and I am pretty sure that WITH a form of age verification and the fact, that it would be a visualisation to "kill your enemies" instead of "making love" to them would be fine with american politics.

You won't need age verification when a hack will give you access to this locked content. I'm also unsure as to HOW you're going to verify anyone's age.

Everyone pays for QL with a credit card currently, so the age verification falls trough. Parents buying their children premium accounts would need to be notified of gibs purchase or something like that.
Although I agree that most quake players are of age and should be able to choose such an option.
