Get whatever free monitor you can off craigslist. Google the model before you pick it up to make sure it can do 120hz. Whoever you get it from will probably drive it to your apartment just to get rid of it. Problem solved.

Imo the best is the Sony F520 with BNC cable (g520 was cheaper but still good) or FW900 if you want widescreen.
High-end Eizo and HP models are also used very good Sony tubes.
Mitsubishi, NEC also made good high-end CRT monitors.

Those things were above 500-1000$ and you can get them under 25-50$ now:)

Why would you like to have a 50 ton heavy-weight sitting on your table if you will be playing in 800x600 anyways? Get a 17" or 19" CRT if needed, since the only reason one would by a CRT is for gaming and there you don't have to care about resolution on a CRT, in video and gfx editing a cheap TFT beats any CRT by hundreds of miles.

I mean one of the ones sold atm or an old one that was expensive back in the days and not a cheap and old one... My Eizo FlexScan M1900 that you can get for 99€ on ebay (when it was released it costed around 250€) is way better than any CRT I used.

rofl what?? no you wont. ive had my CRT set at 1024x768 @ 100hz for years and i still have the best pair of eyes in my family.

only thing i would be concerned about with any CRTs are sitting too close to them for extended periods of time. i would say make sure there's some distance between you and the viewing area.

anything below 120Hz and my eyes are red after 4-5 hours:( if I go above it's much more relaxing for me.

75-85hz is the standard refresh rate for a CRT, and shouldn't irritate your eyes after a few hours of use at all. Otherwise there would've been a major problem back in the day.

100hz / 120hz refresh rate on a CRT is optimal, but not all CRT monitors will support that high of a refresh rate without degrading the image quality.

Yes using my computer with high refresh rates for more than a decade made me sensitive for low Hz, but I don't really mind tbh.
High-end CRT monitors designed for gamers (and graphics artists) can take 120-160Hz any day. (the Sony F520 can take a custom 1080p @ 120Hz)

yeah the Sony F520 is a beast. but if i plan on using resolutions that high, then i mine as well get a nice looking widescreen 120hz LCD that's not nearly as heavy and produces a better looking image.

if you can get one of those for free or for very cheap, then go for it. i do most of my gaming in low resolutions so a low-end 17" dell CRT running at 640x480/800x600/1024x768 @ 100hz works just fine for me.

and i dont see why any graphic artist would choose a CRT over an LCD lol. LCDs are better for design in just about every way for digital art.

Those monitors were made at a time when LCD monitors were not much around or when LCD technology were really crappy.
LCD is not superior, just takes less space and power (and most importantly) much cheaper to produce.
But even today, A LCD monitor what can be used for graphics creation (can do adobe color space at least) (or for gaming in my book because I respect the artists) cost just as much as these CRT monitors did, because I sincerely hope you are not comparing the color reproduction capabilites of high-end CRT monitors to some 300-400$ usless TN panel shit LCD, because that would be very very very clueless and stupid. I tested a ton of LCD monitors and I also have a good one (an IPS ofc), but I still prefer my CRT:)

i donno ive never tried any of the high-end CRTs but the colors on my LED-backlit 1080p LCD are definitely more vibrant than my previous dell CRT. even though its at 60hz, i've gamed with it for about a year now with no problems, as the image is clear and sharp with no visible lag or whatever.

another point i was trying to make is that 16:9 lcd seem to provide much more space than a 4:3 crt for graphic design tho. there's so much room on my 1080p 16:9 lcd screen for just about any design project i need done. 4:3 just seems limiting compare to widescreen 16:9, but i guess its more of a personal preference as im sure some high-end CRTs can attain some pretty impressive 4:3 resolutions as well.

yea, 16:9 or 16:10 are really nice, the only time when I prefer 4:3 over wide is multiplayer FPS.

I need a 17" CRT which can run 1024x768 at 120hz (if it supports 960x720 without forcing it as custom res in the Nvidia control panel that's even better), any recommendations?

I've just set up my old Sony 24inch CRT. My brother gave it me a while ago. It's got a few little problems but it works. I've just played a couple of games at 800 X 600 @ 160hz and it feels like absolute sex compared to my 2233zr at 800 X 600 @ 120hz. The imaging is much more precise and the response and smoothness is just perfect. I'm going to hunt down a nice high end 21inch CRT and sell my samsung. CRT's a thousand times better.

Getting a good CRT is really a big gamble nowadays though. Finding one that gets you 120hz at 800x600 is not that hard to find but most of the old CRT that you get off ebay are not that crispy anymore i.e. blurry and it makes your eyes bleed.

I bought three off ebay and finally the last one was a catch! Looked really old but just stood in the corner in some basement for years. The colors are amazing - i still cant believe it.

Just make sure its a trinition (iiyama, sony, dell etc. are always good).

Btw does anyone know how much electricity these badboys need in comparison to an lcd?

1280x1024 = 100hz is best imho. browsing makes fun and you can work well!

with the energy prices going up, it's something to be concerned with.

Without the 21"crt it looks like the room has a fourth more space, after i was able to put the table much closer to the wall with the LCD on it.
Also the screen geometry hasn't satisfied me with a CRT, and 4:3 looks weird after you got used to 16:10 in my case.

I've just bought a Dell (Sony trinitron) 21inch from ebay. It was only 10 quid so very, very cheap. I've just set it up and it seems to have slight blur problems. It looks fine in Quake but some of the small writing on the desktop is quite blury. Can it really be fixed in the way you described?

iiyama 454 is a good 19" model hz up to 240, 120 easy up to 1280x1024. it does alot of custom hz i.e. 125 if you wanted, set in windows add resolution. I think it is the 514 22" can do the same.

I used to have the 19inch 454. My friend won 2 on eBay so sold me one. Unfortunately it died after a week of use.

I have one of these in really good condition as my main display. It's so epic. I have one of those BenQ 120hz LCDs as well and it doesn't hold a candle. 1600x1200 @ 100hz is such a nice browsing resolution on this, no blur whatsoever.
