You would probably not react the same way towards the sentence 'You are a great guy'. Now look at the word great http://www.dictionary.com/search?q=great , you see that, just as in the case of the word grand, its use for describing size is explained first, for example 'very large in size'. There are even some obscure meanings such as 'pregnant', but in my experience 'Mr X is such a nice guy' is seldom followed by 'omg? can a guy get pregnant?'.
To spell it out, the meaning of the word grand for me, in the context above, dictionary-wise legitimate, is: Admirable and of splendid nature.

I think the players should be allowed to play with the graphics settings they choose. Its mainly important for fast paced dueling games like Q3. The spectators should view it with all the graphics turned up. That is until they all start playing the game, decide picmip 5 is best and start clammoring for it to be shown that way =)

If UT2K3 is to be an action packed fast paced dueling game then your gonna need to be able to tweak he graphics down. I think Mark Rein made it clear that wasnt gonna happen =(

I can see people hiding in the long grass and sniping at people from the other side of the map. Its a bit more impressive when you can shaft someone onto a jump pad, predictively rocket them out of the jump pad, rail them into the air then shaft them all the way down. Hey it is possible, I pulled it off 30min ago =)

Unless ESports has an action packed duel and TDM based game (a la QW, Q3, CPMA) then I'll lose all interest in it. CamperStrike bores me to death and they way they chage it each version makes it more and more boring. UT might have held my interest for 5min but it has nothing on Q3. LeXeR-cha0ticz-pro-q3dm6 !!!!!

Oh yeah and it needs live commentary. TSN were awesome at QuakeCon. That along with the GTV made Qcon02 the best tournament ever from a spectators point of view. Heck I've never even seen RTCW being played let alone played it but man did they make it sound gripping.

Just my personal opinion: TDM sucks, it's simply boring. Worse, it's impossible to bring to the TV.

CTF would work better with the natural focus on the flags. I think an "Esports game" needs some kind of clear objective to be widely understood and accepted by a TV audience. Besides, I strongly feel that the killing aspect is the major obstacle. Violence *is* controversial. Just make the opponent freeze or something, I dunno.

I think that actually, objective style games are the best from a spectator pov.

The reason being, each time the game starts it is going to tell a story i.e. the team has to blow up the Bridge etc.

If you are watching this and you know the storyline, but not the details, it makes the action very viewable. TDM is too pure at the moment to impact upon the mass market imo. CTF is a good game but not as impressive to spectators as Objective play.

What I wonder about, Sujoy, how did the VGA started? Were there already a bunch of Gaming Centres around, just not 'organized'? Does the VGA 'motivate' people to open Gaming Centres or do they open some on their own? Is VGA's policy british only (any plans in expanding to the continent?)....

hmm, I got too many questions ;)

I just think this is the way to go, from the moment you posted first about the VGA here on ESR. IMO, it's kind of a role model, which I like alot more than the CPL type of thing.

Originally it was a loose trade association between the UK gaming centres that were around 3 years ago. About a year ago it became a profit-making limited company spearheaded by Dominic Mulroy who believed in the idea and left his role as MD of Lan Arena to do it. The association part of the VGA it still stands in the form of committees made up of gaming centre managers. However the new company part goes out actively seeking new opportunities and finding new ways to promote gaming (e.g. the tournaments).

Right now we're mainly British, but we're beginning to have more influence overseas with a few centres outside of the UK. However our main work is in the UK since that is where we have best working relationships with publishers and manufacturers.

The VGA doesn't own its own gaming centres, or directly motivate people to start new ones. However if someone wants to open a gaming centre we will provide them with advice (e.g. where to put it) and help in setting it up, and following that all the regular services for centres that are running.

Roy & Mulroy sounds like a law firm.

The Demonic Core history as an example in Europe of what a competitive clan should be, and Sujoy/Danold in Duel was I think the begining of what a competitive scene should be in Europe. And for both Sujoy had a great involvment.

Why bother with spectating when you don't even have a game that is worth playing?

it is of course a matter of personal opinions on which games are and aren't worth playing.

A game makers primary concern should be the player - not some casual spectator from dream land.

Good interview. Its cool reading about what is going on behind the scenes of this still very young industry.

In the US, there is an organization called igames (www.igames.org) that performs a function similar to VGA I think. Recently they helped coordinate the regional competitions for the XBOX Halo National Championships. I think some of their member cafe's also participate in some of the CPL regionals.

I wanted to mention the XBOX tourney specifically because I think we are on the verge of an inflection point in this infant video gaming industry and it seems to me that the future lies with the consoles. Certainly professional gaming is not going to disappear on the PC, however, it seems inevitable that in next couple of years we will see competitve gaming on the consoles surpass and dwarf that of the PC. Console gaming will garner more prize money, more sponsorships, a larger view audience, and higher advertising revenue than PC competitive gaming. There are still lots of unknowns at this stage, but I base my predictions on the resources (monetary and marketing clout) that MS/Sony have and also the strategic importance of the consoles to the two companies. There is a lot at stake here for MS/Sony and it goes far beyond just gaming.

There are a number of interesting questions.

How agressively will MS/Sony pursue competitve gaming?

What are MS's intentions with ngstats?

How will MS's closed model fare versus Sony's open model of online gaming?

Will MS/Sony start leagues of their own?

Will the console networks morph into fullblown media networks? In other words, will XBOX Live become a sort of ESPN-meets-MTV channel for console gaming complete with a variety of programming (tourney coverage, gaming news, machinima movies,and possibly some really wacky ideas for interactive game shows like Survivor meets DoomIII, or Asheron's MillionDollar Quest). Instead of broadcasting video feed they broadcast programs via demo feeds ala QTV and develop technology to insert advertising into the feed.

I'd be interested to hear Sujoy's views on console gaming.

Listen everyone,

Sujoy along with ESports have contributed throughout these years to push the gaming scene forward. They have worked extremely hard and it's paying off. The only problem is that we're at a very young stage, and need to provide (as a community) much more than just "great work Sujoy" or "Sujoy is my idol". We have to do much more. What if esreality created a membership scheme where we donate a certain amount of money every month, and in exchange, not only would we be investing much more in the gaming scene, but it would benefit all of us as gamers.

Just my thought...
