it's an invitational tournament for the top players of dota1 to compete in dota2

dota2 is being built to be pretty much the same as dota1 and they'll continue development from there when it's out

That's pretty lolski taking into account how much money they're giving out.

rather than pay for advertisements they are putting 1million into a gigantic tournament to garner hype over a game that's been pretty much completely closed from public until 2 days ago when its first leak came out and yday when the trailer came out.

it's a hype tournament so they invited only top teams. the game wasn't ready for open beta likely, so they needed to keep it small at the expense of a non open tournament.

This is excellent, as Blizzard haven't had any real competition in a while. This is a huge win for the gamer, even more than it is for gaming.
