No matter who you place instead of czm. Cypher with this skill and more important confidence(he tends to go emo sometimes) is a really hard opponent.. noone could beat him..He was really "cyber" in this game..

Yep, his self-confident was much more stronger then in my opinion.

As awesome as it is, what cooller pulled of in that infamous telefrag game against cypher until that telefrag happened was even more impressive imo.

i also vividly remember the last game of that tournament, crusher vs hawok on dm6, it was the one game that decided who would take the third and final german spot.

hawok takes the lead and goes from agressive to arrogant, trying to control every item on the map just to fuck with crusher... and of course he pays big time as crusher finds enough time to steal one armor and then ambush hawok to win the game. ohh, the rage and disappointment on irc :D

Best/worst commentary ever maybe, but I've definitely seen killsen hit sicker rails than in that game. I think Killsen vs Fazz or demon on hektik was way crazier, hitting 70%+.

The first demo I ever watched was lexer vs cha0ticz on dm6; its still one of my favorites and a really good watch; an epic comeback for the time (2002 quakecon iirc?)

all of these old games are good and fun to watch, but I thought this guy was asking for the best play ever? that easily comes down to the Cypher vs rapha set @ last year's MSI Beat It Finals.

I don't know what you think when you do say "best play ever", but in my opinion the fact that now players do aim with a marginal error of below 25% misses on shots is hardly relevant
to me it's like old movies from last century which even if they lack technical capabilities are so much better because they were 1st to come out with stuff; lakerman and thresh back from 2000 and makaveli vs blue on the edge have fuckin historical value
these were the goddamn explorers the Gods of quake, take for example lakerman anticipation on ztn when going into plasma action against Fat-a-Lot
doesn't matter how many more competitions will cypher and rapha win, and how closer and closer to perfection their timing movement and aim will be, in historical perspective their matches are still those of two mortals

totally, completely wrong. lol. guys like fatality did establish a lot of things in early Q3 days, but, if they hadn't, someone else would have. and play pretty much stagnated from that point on. everyone still played the same game until ZeRo4 or cooller came along, but they also just merely expanded on fatality's lead.

cypher and rapha have taken things to a whole new level. the game is completely different now.

you tend to get that when you play the same videogame for 10 years and compare them to people who have played it seriously for half that time and you are still young enough to dedicate huge time to it.

Skill shown in relation to time is the best test of skill.

Yes Rapha and Cypher are better now, but they were not when CZm was in his prime and when CZM has the age advantage.

Not taking anything away from cypher rapha, simply saying AGE is a big factor in how much time you can play, and what you can process in a game.

The fact that CZM did what he did in the game at a relatively early time (Duel+TDM) while at Princeton getting math degree to me makes him the best player. By far.

Cooller won't be so cool when he's playing videogames with children when he hits 30.

so, how about czm saying something along the lines of "I'm in shape, if cypher wins then he's better than I ever was" was all a lie? czm then went on to be absolutely dominated, he looked like a newbie, cypher didn't even have to try.

czm got back into his prime shape, it just wasn't good enough any more, he admitted that. Cooller did it many times, but he had to improve on top of that and it still isn't good enough, the same goes for czm and you'll see it again now as he's moving to Europe, he'll still fall short.

doing what czm did was impressive, no doubt and he is one of the greats, his team efforts keep him up there, but as a duellist he falls short compared to fat, zero4, cooller and now rapha and cypher and probably avek. He only has one winning set over cooller (his prime) and a map cooller and jibo admittedly threw, in fact his winning history doesn't exist compared to any of those guys, duel anyway.

as for his education, he was on servers constantly across the globe playing like a mad man regardless of his ping, he still put in as much effort as anyone, how do you think he got so good at hub? It's all he was doing. Life may have slowed him down here and there but I remember crappy periods from all the current top players with the exception of rapha due to other things in life taking priority.

by your own admission you wasn't around pre 05-03 anyway, so you missed some 4-6 years of quake anyway most of which was its most active period.

he's had some other top placings but against weak competition or he was beat out by the likes of fatality, zero4, lexer, lakerman and so on. Then the 'prime' years come by and he ended up with even match wins against the player he had already won much more, went on to win more and is still a top 4 player (cooller)

he's a great without a doubt but 2 duel wins, and a draw tie in games against the other top player of the time doesn't cut it into being greatest, ever.

if we'd have a time machine to be able to teleport best q3 players of all times when they were at their peak and put them together to play all mods they played or some new unified quake version, the results would come quite unexpected

I tend to agree with this. I love watching the old matches (~ 2000 or so) but can't help but feel that today's bests are sooo much better than the best of 10 years ago.

Also, though, this makes watching czm and zero4 play now very interesting.
