What you are describing there is normally referred to as "Russian Quake Style", because it was invented and still is mainly used by Quakers from the former USSR.

At this time Tournaments and games over all were played mainly in Internet-Cafés, because of the lack of space the tables were pertty small and the place even got smaller because of the big heavy CRTs used back then. So it was much easier to put his keyboard on his knees and to use the available space for mouse/mousepad.

Now (2010) this kind of style actually got pretty useles as the players get a lot of space when playing in LAN-Tournaments (big tables and LCDs) but because of personal preference some players continue using the russian style.

Players known to me who used or still use this style:

Anton "Cooller" Singov (Quake 3, Quake 4 and Quake Live player, still uses russian style)
Alexey 'uNkind' Smaev (Quake 3 player and WCG 2002 winner, he's not active anymore)
Alexey 'LeXeR' Nesterov (Quake 3 and Painkiller player, not active anymore)
Aleksej 'Cypher' Yanyshevskij (Quake 3, Quake 4 and Quake Live player, still active and very successful)
Shane 'rapha' Hendrixson (Quake 3 and Quake Live player, uses russian style because one of his biggest idols was Cooller)

What your links don't really show it that he stills sits at dwarf-height and has his forearm on the table, exactly like he used to do. He just switched the keyboard around.

I'm not arguing about that, totally agree that he sits in the same posture :)
Just the thread was about keyboard on lap/knees.

He still does use it from time to time, but he does not seem to use it consistantly like cooller or rapha. More like: "Ok I'm playing shit, lets switch keyboard position to own ass, oh yeah!". In Q4 he also played with keyboard on the table but then he switched back to keyboard on knees, strange little belarus guy :/.

He kinda does, the keyboard is on the table but given his position, his left arm is kinda floating in the air.

even back then you could see that he had potential - look at the "sick" mouse movements (and that was fucking 10 years ago).

I played QW with a mitsumi mouse, best shape ever! Very light too! However when I went on to Q3, the dpi just wasn't enough and the right mouse started breaking... still!

it's because russians are too poor to buy a large table or desk :p

iirc polosatiy broke his hand as a kid and that was the only position he could comfortably play in, because polos is rulez everyone around him adapted quickly.

I think some if it has to do with being able to control your mouse better with your entire arm anchored directly to the table. I wish I could play that way but I play on my living room table which is too low :/.

Cypher can do both and still perform the same...
The way you are playing (keyboard on lap or on desk) doesnt really change your brain game anyway, and as far as I know, the best aimers in the world (stermy, strenx, killsen...) use their keyboard on the desk. :P

It really is only as wtfproof explained above, that playstyle was born probably in Russia because of the small spaces they had in cyber cafes...

Rapha, cypher and avek are the only "newschool" players that I know of that use this yet (though as I said cypher played with keyboard on desk during dreamhack) and that is probably due to their (past?) admiration to the fantastic player that cooller is.

But I still believe the reason why cypher avek and rapha use this setup is because of cooller, not polosiaty... Could be wrong though. Now now cooller probably uses this setup because of polos... =)

I have duel monitors, so my mouse pad is infront of my crt, and the keyboard stays infront of my lcd. Best of both worlds.

i switched a year back because i noticed that i would keep letting go of my mouse and readjusting the keyboard placement, even during infights(or rather, not i noticed, but my roommate).

then i got a qck+ which is way too huge anyway and i fugred i'd try playing with keyboard on lap. haven't switched back since, and there's no way i can let go of the mouse to readjust my keyboard placing when it's on my lap.. atleast on without letting go for <1s.

you let go of your mouse, during infights, to readjust your keyboard. sounds perfectly logical! ;)

never noticed it myself.. but during rail reload time i would push the keyboard slightly from the right, for example :)

I also play like that due to lack of space on my desk , tho i noticed overtime that my left wrist is alot less stressed this way, and my overall posture feels more confortable aswell.
It doesnt make any diference on my gameplay/skill/wtv tho.

@zealot: Polosatiy invented it, but cooller is, was and will be the most well known player who used/uses this style. Cypher, Av3k, rapha all saw cooller as a idol or even were trained by cooller so they took his style. I strongly doub that rapha ever met polos or played against him (same with cypher/av3k), his time was long over by the time those guys started taking over the top. Cooller however played a lot with him (or against) and learned from him. However for cooller/unkind the reason to use this style wasn't a injured hand/arm/wrist but the fact that polos was one of the better players at this time AND that there was almost no space in inet-cafes. So what you are telling here is only half the story, what you are saying is true but not the only reason why there is this play-style.

the reason why there is this play-style is simply because polos had a fucked up hand. later he went on to rule the russian quake scene for a while and as he said people adopted because they thought there is some secret magic trick behind his skills.

there is not, but it's a nice story to remind us of the power of make-believe.

where are you getting the info that the style had anything to do with lack of space in russian inet-cafes? i'm not doubting it helps, i just keep hearing this mainly from people who have no connection to the russian scene at this time.

I tried it, but i felt less focused and more relaxed, and I was not 100% into the game, idk why tho

i used it long time ago because of small space on desk (not enough freedom with mouse moving).

I used to play with keyboard on my lap until I took an arrow in the knee.

The keyboard is on the lap, so that you don't hit it with your mouse while moving the mouse i think, that's the only thing that makes sense to me. More space for your mouse movements. ;)

Secondly you clearly didn't read anything from the thread about the origins of the Russian style.
Finally what kind of reason is that? I mean you can move your keyboard more to the left if you keep hitting it while swiping your mouse.

It's so that your mouse is closer to the rest of your body.

ppl still use this Kind of Setup because it suits ppl, who attend many lans. Because at lan-parties you sometimes have to cope (or had to cope with in the past) with not having enough space to put your Keyboard on the desk.
Also, when you have your Keyboard on your lap, you can have it always at the same "height" compared to the rest of your body. The desk where you might put your Keyboard otherwise can differ in height therefore you can exterminate one variable and adapt maybe quicker to an unknown Environment/Setup style at lan-parties; at least that's what Sheth the SC2 Player from TeamLiquid said, when asked; ofc we all know that it's quake-russia, where it originated from.

I have to play Russian style because in my small house I don't have a desk. So, my computer is sideways on my bedside table, with my monitor in front of it. I put the mouse/mousepad on the bed next to me on top of something hard (on old award from work that is the same size as my mousepad), and my keyboard in my lap. Works just as good as anything else I've tried.
