Played this mod last year and it was such a joke.

Instant weapon switch.
Retarded sound system.

I also noticed that the increased speed allowed me to escape positioning errors I would get punished for in other games.

I also found that the community in general was less skilled and I believe this showed in the achievements of their top players being much lower than those who played OSP and Qualelive.

If you're a real gamer I would not recommend this game because you'll always feel like you're not playing at the top level of play.

If that doesn't matter to you then I would say to give this game a look, but beware, it will make it much harder to play conventional FPS games at a decent level.

For this reason, I would not recommend this game for new players.

P.S.
I also found the community to be quite hostile and unaccepting of such views, but it goes with what I said, such players will have been beaten down from other mods, so its natural for them to want to defend it, but it doesn't make them right.

Well just look at how your top players perform when it comes to other Quakes despite trying from doom 3 to quakelive.

They are only "good" in CPM, outside of it they struggle to hack other games, so its not really going to get any better down the food chain.

That's what I meant; I mean its more of an observation based on real world results, so its not really arguable.

What I'm saying is promode gets you into bad habbits that do not transfer well into other games because most games have parameters that do not adhere to promode.

The calibration is much bigger, given more games adhere to non promode standards, I think its a fair observation.

Can't really expect someone who has played cpm for years to switch over to vq3 and instantly be one of the best. The key skills are different. Likewise zero4 and czm were both defeated in cpm by top American players. There is just no point in these statements when the players involved have little stake in playing games outside of their preference.

Some people play games for enjoyment. CPM has a distinct feel you can not find anywhere else in quake engine games. Dodging and movement are elevated above to-the-second timing in duel. It is more forgiving in general, but that greatly depends on who you are playing.

It's just a different game, and despite have a pretentious name, I don't think many in the community have a cpm > vq3/osp/ql attitude.

I know you're trolling but please do grace us with an explanation of how VQ3 and QL's excellent sound systems work. You might want to include reference to the issues caused by PVS and why this is good for gameplay.

Actually I'll give you the sound system one over Quakelive because that's shoddy too with regards to pin pointing an opponent.

The difference is, I'm pretty sure idsoftware were forced to implement crappy sound because I belive they had a run in with an Open AL patent a few years ago in doom 3.

Whicever way you cut it, its much harder to recalibrate from playing CPM because most other FPS games follow a more unified ruleset.

CPM breaks a lot of those rules, which isn't healthy because its just one game. If all you play is CPM then that's fine, but if you're a purist of fps games, it makes it a "bad habbit" game IMO.

The system is seen as superior for gameplay compared to the VQ3 one by the design team. It's not the ideal system, which would have more of a realistic concept of areas being completely separate from one another even if they are close by, probably using a pre-compiled sound map. It was thought to be better because it gives a greater reward for sound awareness, more like the system of Q2 which used sound very well to give you tricks and a very strategic game. It also properly separates sound from sight as a sense in the game, as is explained in the following sound is tied to sight in the VQ3 system, it is sometimes limited in a very unnatural way.

PVS, the system used to control sound in VQ3 is also pretty fundamentally broken, it's mostly sort of right but we don't accept brokenness. PVS is 'potential visible set', it's the areas the game thinks you might be able to see, so if you are in a room it would, roughly speaking, model the room as a big cube and all it knows is that you are in the room (of course these things could be done perfectly with line of sight but that would take huge amounts of processing power to ray trace what is and isn't visible). If another area, any part of that area, is visible from any, and I mean any, part of your area then it is in the potential visible set. This is used to cull level geometry so the game runs quickly and is how the BSP (binary space partition) level format works . Sound also uses this system which has some stupid effects. The cutting done to generate the visibility map is done by the computer in a 'generally right but sometimes stupid' way. This means that something right next to you, just around a corner might be out of PVS, if something is out of PVS then something there makes no sound, so you could fire a grenade that's almost right next to you and suddenly the sound from it cuts out. The dm6 stairs from middle to bridge was a classic example of this. The system also throws up stupid oddities, symmetrical architecture can have different sound properties on each side because the BSP process has chirality, a handed-ness so left and right are not the same.

This system is not trivially fixable and is already intimately (and successfully) tied to the function of the game's visuals so can't carelessly be tweaked around to help the sound.

Neither system is anywhere near perfect, to see someone attempt to behave as Jamerio does, as if it's so naturally obvious, intuitive and wonderful is amusing, little more than familiarity blinding you to its obvious brokenness and flaws.

QW, Q2, HL & even CS has the same sound distance, which was lowered in Q3 and seems to be lowered even more in QL

i'm no dueller but it seems most frags in QL comes from "frag conversion" or whatever the casters call it. it's like 1-2 or 3-3 until 1 minute and then someone pulls away with 8 frags or so

that happens in any dueling game... but the fact hte scores are 1-1 2-1 kinda signifies that spawning isn't as bad as cpm's 45 - 0 :)

i've played cpm and vq3 for a long time I can hate both in their own way... cpm is fun I agree but I don't find it deep like QL. They both have a fucked up spawn system

Quake 3 stole my enjoyment out of so many good FPS games on consoles purely because of the control method, but it was for the greater good becaue anyone whose played Quake 3 will tell you Halo 3-4-5 are a joke in comparison. Its jsut people don't realise it yet.

CPM takes it a stage further and breaks many of the gameplay rules in an already niche way of playing.

Most other PC FPS games will not go down the route of CPM, so you learn (become dependant) on bad habbits there, its difficult to take the skills you learend from it and be as effective.

Being good at quake is like being good at super turbo, you can play and do well in pretty much any other FPS or fighter becuase its so simple and fundamnetal.

With CPM, you will pay for that massive sound radius, you will pay for having that wrong weapon out, you will pay for being slightly out of position.

Those 3 things alone effect you hugely. SOme will be ok, but generally, I don't think its a good game to play, not becaue I think its a bad game in its own right, but with regards to the wider picture, its not good.

check out the 3min mark this is called "bad spawning" as for predicting spawns... I'm not defending it by any means just trying to explain their POV as the spawns are wank and so are they in CPM.

The spawns in QL from what I can tell have been pushed to spawn furthest, giving your opponent the time to make decisions on which path he can take to keep away and retrieve more armour. If you watch pro's play, sadly occasionally like in most games the spawns can be pretty harsh and fuck up but a lot of the time you will notice pro score lines inbetween the average of 2-0 1-0 etc etc... just because when you or I or any other amateur duels the scores end higher doesn't mean it's bad... we are just shit :o)

Er no pro scores are low cos they are shit scared to attack incase the die in a bad place where the spawn is easily predicted :P

That spawn at 3 mins wasnt the closes spawn and that map is tiny, he spawns close again after but kills voo due to movement being able to give him a chance to grab a weapon
