Other than a real pad, I'm not sure what you're looking for. Keyboard is the best alternate controller.

You can build a metal pad that's equally good with a PS2 controller, some sheet metal, and some plexiglass. It'd cost you under $100 to make it yourself, and would still even be cheaper if you had to buy tools with it. =P

The regular PS2 ones won't register two arrows at once, so jump steps are impossible.
