That and they would rarely play together as a team. They got together like a week before the Olympics and expected to rape.
It wasn't until a team was formed ~3 years before, and played together regularly, that we went back to winning.

I don't follow the Olympics. But, before this I had asked everyone I knew how the hockey was done (group play, brackets, etc) and NO ONE KNEW.

Shouldn't that be one of the first things you look into? =\

3 groups of 4, the best 4 teams of all the groups advance directly to quartelfinal.
The rest of the teams play one playoff for the other 4 quarterfinal spots.
The NHL only freed their players if there are less game then last time so they invented this new strange system...

And I don't get what's funny about Canada and USA being in the same group, it's not like they are the two best nations in hockey...

Barry is your standard midfielder and there's loads of them across the top leagues.

I couldn't believe he was touted as a replacement for Flamini at Arsenal and Xabi Alonso at Liverpool and the fact that both teams only wanted him for a cheap price says it all (<£10m).

Man City are doing well this season for the same reason Aston Villa were doing so well last season, long ball counter-attacks (hence not losing at home) albeit with a much deeper and expensive squad.

Nothing to do with Barry and Tevez per se, each could be replaced pretty easily.

I've Watched loads, it's the strategy they play that has got them to "fourth" so far and it's the same strategy Aston Villa play.

Just because those guys play within it, doesn't mean they are carrying the team in any way, or have been exceptional, City wouldn't collapse simply because they missed those two players.

I agree with Aston villa's play style, but I strongly disagree with City's. Just look how many goals are scored from standarts or long range shots.

They are, it's just City/Spurs/Everton/Fulham have all improved.

Barry is just really solid (He's like Phil Neville!) and while Tevez has been good they wouldn't have collapsed without either of them.

Kompany/De Jong are both strong at the same position as Barry and they have plenty of options up front.

that doesn't even make sense. You are a hockey country that is basically everything you do. No, the skill level was not even close to being even. Canada was a favorite to win gold. USA wasn't even favored to medal. The fact US took it to OT vs a 99% hockey country is amazing. Would be like canada coming within like 30 points in a basketball game vs the US.

26671 - Reply to #131

Actually, analysts couldn't really agree on a good prediction for who would end up on the podium -- in fact, 6 teams could have potentially won gold this year the way they all played. It also turns out that Slovakia and Switzerland got even deeper into the tournament than usual, and both Russia and Sweden (my favourites for) got dropped in the quarterfinals. Crosby also sucked (and is overrated anyways), and it turned out the Russians were too arrogant to get along with each other, including Ovechkin and Malkin. There were a ton of surprises this tournament, and to say that, despite all that, Canada was such a clear-cut favourite to win, despite having two old defensemen and an old goalie, is pretty shallow. Russia could have easily stepped up with an equally stacked roster.

btw, a good point I've heard elsewhere:

>USA wins the gold medal
"It's about time we're recognized as the best at hockey!"

>USA doesn't win the gold medal
"C'mon man, all your country cares about is hockey. Do you think I even care?"

This is why the world hates you.

the facts is USA wasn't expected to medal at ALL.

You're half-right. They were expected by everyone to AT LEAST make the semifinals along with Sweden, Canada, and Russia, in which only one team doesn't make the podium at that point. That was the general consensus. Considering how good Slovakia looked against such a competitive field, I don't think 4th is as big of a disappointment as you're implying it would be.

Also, you keep saying the USA doesn't care about hockey, and yet your country hosted the biggest hockey game in the history of the sport, both in its legacy (and in terms of TV ratings, which easily trumped this year's Olympic hockey)...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KArdaAu7p9M

...and also when it comes to biggest turnout for a hockey game. And the game in question was college hockey, no less -- I mean, the top teams in the OHL and the WHL would destroy most NCAA hockey teams, but there's a reason they call Detroit "Hockeytown." Namely, 'cause Michigan's love for hockey is almost unparalleled. Almost.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qT3Aygpbgs

Stupid hockey non-fans/no-life trolls sure are stupid when they talk out of their ass about hockey.

So Fox and Rapha are tied?

Great game, a bit pathetic with canada being allowed to use their own referees for the game, but nevertheless, great game.

"McCreary has already been part of change in Olympic hockey. Traditionally, only refs from neutral countries would oversee big games. McCreary, however, refereed the infamous Canada-Czech Republic shootout game that eliminated Canada from gold-medal contention at the first Olympic tourney to welcome NHLers in 1998."

i am pretty ok with that ;p

What the fuck do you mean pathetic excuse for a loss? I didnt lose! I'm Swedish!

I'm not American or Canadian, so it doesnt matter which team won the gold.
What I do think though is that its ridiculous that a team should be able to use their own referees.
There were 3-4 quite obvious penalties for Canada that should have gotten called.
Perhaps we should this more often though, and not just in hockey. For example it would be nice to See italy vs england in world cup finals in football. And we use an Italian referee. Let's see the reactions on something like that.

Haha. I'm not an idiot, I know you're not american or canadian and I never said you were. You said it's pathetic that they used canadian referees and I say that's a pathetic excuse for a loss considering ALL TEAMS AGREED that it was okay in the first place. I would love to see those 3-4 penalties that weren't called though, because I think you're just pulling shit out your ass. I didn't see anything wrong with the officiating.

I would show you if it was possible. Sadly the olympic comittee does not allow any content from olympics on the web. Last time i checked anyways.

But there were a fuckload of crosscecks, specifically 4-5 by pronger that were more severe than the others. also some calls for offside when it wasnt.
USA should have had some more calls against them too, but not as many.

Nevertheless, like i said, the game was great, one of the best game so far this year, all competitions, despite the unpunished infractions :D

Well I'll have to download the game and re-watch it or something.. but I agree that it was a fantastic game by both teams. You can't ask for a better final in the olympic games. Imagine how crosby felt after making that OT goal in is home country to win it for team canada. Crazy stuff.

I saw the "viewer count" for that game (number of canadians watching it on tv), it was staggering!
Aproximately 50% of the entire canadian population watched the entire game, and about 80% watched at least a part of the game.

They are allowed if the team the player plays for isnt in the playoffs run anymore.
Though some players doesnt wish to play as they have just finished an 82 game season by the time of the WC (and sometimes a round of playoffs as well).

UBC was so boring, though. I was waving my BC and Canada flags asking people to honk if they love Canada after the gold-medal game, and only about half the cars honked -- I'm guessing because there were a ton of old people passing by who are probably as boring as the old people I see around my apartment building. But then the bus I got on right afterwards was quiet as hell, too. Where were the rowdy students at!? :(

Downtown was just like a two-week-long gong show. Made me not wanna go that often 'cause I knew I wasn't gonna get into a bar anyways no matter how hard I tried to find one with some space. :P
