Unless you're going to go all the way and give each player a special card to swap opponents or replace all railguns with machine gun ammo, then at least we know the idea is meant to be ridiculous from the start.

relax dude, the whine expressed here is only due to the fact that cooller fanboys don't like the first matchup. if cypher didn't have ping 120+PL vs prox, all would be ok, and noone would whine about the system.

It doesn't have to be Cooller or Cypher - I find it just as annoying when arbitrary systems produce early matchups like these for any top players. The whole point of seeding a tournament is to keep them separate until the later rounds.

And regardless of the spectator value, it simply isn't fair on the players. If, for whatever reason, a seeded player doesn't make it through his group, he should not be given a second chance against what will often be another seeded player who's almost had the same thing happen to him. Systems like these also provide lax incentives for top players to perform at their best during the group stages, since they know they'll get another chance (and when it's someone like Cypher, this means undermining the hard work his opponent has done to finish second in his group).

Even more worryingly, these systems increase the opportunities for players to lose on purpose in order to face easier opponents (see #2). This gives players whose matches are scheduled later an information advantage over those whose matches are scheduled earlier.

...but these matchups are just results of a few surprises in the group stage.

its not so often you have a tournament with this many good players in it, let them have a second chance. cypher surely deserves it, cause he should be #2 in his group if it wasn't for his belarussian ping. (that was the only real surprise in the tournament with linkin easily beating him)

That's exactly my point: the groups are fair, and yet we still have a very unbalanced early matchup because of the relegation system.
