Game for Xbox 360, PS3, afaik. First person game like that game, "Breakdown". Specifically designed to be as naseua inducing experience as possible.

Basically the game is a gimmick. You play first person, but you don't shoot guns or whatever. Your skill is movement (wall-running, wall-jumping, sliding, high-jumping, etc.).

u do shoot guns... its not a gimmick at all really as the gameplay is unique...

the game is meant to emulate an urban sport known as 'parkour'...

from what I've read, the combat is an after-thought to the game. The main selling point for the game is the movement. But I guess I'm not really in a position to judge, I haven't played... nor do I plan to play it.

You have displayed the greatest flaw in current commercial game criticism. Downplaying the new concepts and nit picking small errors and you haven't even played the game.

How can games evolve if every commercial game that comes out is bashed into oblivion over small problems and the big steps forward are completely ignored by everyone. Here lies a problem for us all, we will forever be locked in a small room where we hold quake high up on a pedestal and pray for a game similar in quality to come out. Yet none of us want that at all, we've played the game for 10+ years and we all know its time for a fresh new experience. So for us to sit here and bash a well executed new concept stunts the evolution we all beg for and forces publishers to go after the same ol' ww2 shooters.

As an aside, the indie gaming scene is completely void of this problem, and because of this you will always be able to find fresh ideas therein.

I don't know if you remember the game Breakdown. It was first person action/adventure with hand-to-hand combat. Breakthrough? No. It was a gimmick trying to set itself apart from the FPS genre.

I'll admit I'm not much of a gamer outside of Quake or games like Civilization. But I have played several games which I think are really breaking new ground.

Bioshock
Portal
Katamari Damacy (yes, I said it)

All of these games were brilliant, immersive, and entertaining. And not because of some gimmick (well, maybe Katamari Damacy). I don't know anything, tbh, about Mirror's Edge. Only from a couple gameplay videos and it looks to me like a Breakdown clone with movement added to the mix. And walljumping/sliding isn't anything new either. Metroid was doing that back in the early 90s.

Both Portal and Bioshock rely on concepts that were invented a decade earlier.

- Prey demoed the portals in mid-late 90's
- Bioshock is dumbed down System Shock from mid 90's

Released after both. If you mean in goodness, I have love-hate-relationship with Deus ex's combat.

+ In other hand I like the fact the way you have to macro-manage resource-spending in combat and think the situations through

- In other hand the movement is ankward and shitty adn slow, the situations become chaotic tranny trainwrecks where you chase people with whatever tuba in your hand because you have no firepower. Lots of Save/loading involved

Deus Ex (even goty) has its faults but it's the most atmospheric game I've played so far. The characters, the world, the story. Everything else I've played pale in comparison. This is one of the few, perhaps even the only game I've played through non stop so that I haven't touched another game in between.

this game (mirror's edge) is in that class. sure not much for gunplay, but seriously, it gives you CHOICES. The game gives you choices to use the gun or go without, and freedom to make those choices while running ridiculously hard courses. Granted i have only played the 360 demo, but i played the demo probably 10 times over and it takes some serious focus to be good.

I will be getting the full version for pc as soon as possible.

not really interested in single player either.. but as for timetrails, its great fun to play with friends!

Yes, I got my time in the first ten tries, but then I spent like about half an hour trying to make a better run but I kept failing, usually on the last jump or on the vent pipe, which sometimes I can't climb for some strange reason.

It's pretty fun anyway, I'm going to try to get three stars in every challenge before downloading replays or watch videos.

Played the single player a bit at my friends house (He plays newest console games, I occasionally go over there for a sense of sanity, and to see what's new) and the single player is indeed innovative.

My problem was the whole 'Lets make important places red' concept. Sure, in the first few levels it helps, but from my understanding, it doesn't go away. I think it SHOULD, because otherwise players don't to actually think where to go next.

You can disable it. Also, the thing is they show you the most obvious path so you know where do you have to go. The fun part is finding faster ways to reach your goal.

How does what other people do in a single player game impact your experience?

It doesn't, but I have a big gripe about new games, and how they're making games easier and easier as time goes on. It's bullshit that in 4 hours I can breeze through any number of new popular games, yet it still takes more people a LONG time to get through any Megaman on the NES (If they can even beat it).

you have to realize games are getting much more intricate than old NES games. ffs mario was easy as you could only go ONE WAY lolol. In Mirror's Edge, the red paths help you to get a feel, then once you learn the game, make your own path!
some people aren't as 'game savvy' as others so they may need some guidance... i don't see any problem with that.

as far as breezing through new games... seriously, does any NES game pose a challenge for you anymore? If so let me know and i'll try it, because i get so bored with NES/SNES games so quick because there is virtually no challenge anymore. Mega man is so LAFF.

One particular track record was about 2:xx minutes, a friend played the game for the first time, felt of the bridge, and there he comes: shortcut, this way. His time was about 15 seconds. That's what I'm calling breaking a record :P

in stunts you could just drive a circle and drive through the start point from behind to finish a track, if i remember correctly :)

didn't you get a huge penalty for it?


Anyway I think the most fun in stunts were those "bugs" where you were catapulted through the map after hitting some edges.

The fuck? It's first person. I don't think I've seen a first person game play better with analogue ever.

I'm really having difficulty understanding how it could possibly be worst. You can be more fluid, more accurate with your movements, better sudden turns. The only mechanic that it doesn't favour is the weird sprint shit you pick up when running in an almost straight line, but you will get used to that.

I'm gonna get it when it releases on Steam.

Yeah I got this game the other day and played the demo the day it came out... it totally reminded me of defrag/quake trick jumping period. q2dm1 = The (mirrors) Edge ;P

I wish I could find out for real but it feels like this game had to be inspired by quake trick jumping.
