The gaming market is simply too fragmentated and is still very much a niche hobby (esport wise). The olympics is already a complex process of covering many events throughout the two/three weeks it is run. The only way gaming could be considered is if there was one game for each genre which in itself is pretty stretched out.

Before you know it the olympics would end up as being as silly as a guy in the guiness book of records for taking a shit in 2 seconds.

The Olympic Games is just stupid in general. Too many ridiculous events (Judged and non-judged). I'm sure I'm probably the only one thinking this but, what's the point in all those different strokes in swimming, why not just have distances and let the best strokes win rather than have events to see who is the fastest in the slowest technique. We don't have the hopping 100m or the walking 100m.

anyways squash is my favourite racket sport, surely for big events like the Olympics they could spend some money and put all sorts of tiny cameras all over the court, along with the transparent walls it should be fine for spectators

youre having a laugh if you question badmintons variation i suggest you watch some top quality matches (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics/live...id=7534976 - mixed doubles finals on stream atm). for variation it slaughters the two tennis sports. i like watching tennis but for the most part nowadays its baseline shots from one side to the other with the odd dropshot attempt

you see compared to ball sports so i took it to include table tennis & tennis which is laughable

you need to think of the entertainment factor too. people like seeing games that have a variation of short & fast rallies. badminton/tennis/table tennis all have ways to end the point in 1 shot its not some boring endurance game every shot. kinda hard to win a point in 1 shot when the opposition needs such slow reflexes with the time from the players racket, to the wall where they can work out where its likely to go and all the way back again for them to hit it.

I really doubt sports like water polo, wrestling, fencing etc are more popular worldwide. It's possible it ain't as big as the three you mentioned (altho I have doubts about badminton), but it might be bigger then you'd expect; 150 countries play it worldwide.
I quickly did a search, and the chances are likely that it will be at the olympics in '12 or '16.
I'm not quite sure about the spectating possibilities, that might be a problem. They hit hard, but not that hard to NOT see the ball btw =).

squash is a great sport but unfortunately, it's not very good for television audiences. limited room makes for limited camera options which in turn makes for boring TV (atleast from the games i've seen). tennis, badminton and table tennis are spectator friendly. this could be a reason?

squash and golf are similar imo. fun to play + lots of potential for professional competition but rather boring for the average joe to watch.

bit unfair to compare it to golf, squash requires extremely high fitness levels whereas cheeseburger munchers like John Daly can win at the biggest golf tournaments hardly what you would call an athlete.

His nick is sp_ (formerly "spirit") and afaik he uses the joystick for the movements, mouse to aim and keyboard for additional binds like drops, teammessages etc.

The GGL seems to be going ahead with "the digital games" event...I gave up interest after it took 2 months longer to get any info, winners had to pay their own way and the finals were being held two months after the Olympics (yet they're still AT the event).

I also dislike arguments that try to knock other sports - it's easy to do with any sport. And each requires skill - not everyone in the world is competing at the Olympics in Air Rifle for example. Not my cup of tea but I'm not going to dismiss the competitors...

better take football : its more specialised, it has its own worldcup and eurocup.

people generally watching the football worldcup are more into the whole feeling when watching. they are more interested imo and they can better focus on single things.

olympics is only that big because of the many disciplines, but lets be honest many specs wouldnt watch one alone. they only watch the blown up version in the olympics which is a nice idea thats true. but imo progaming can be a really big thing on itself.

If eSports became more organised and there were systems in place to protect players then it could safely become mainstream. However, that does not exist at the moment and therefore sponsors run amuck (t-shirts, WCG (EA)) and tournaments get away with murder (CPL).

Get organisation in place however and it means that players can get a decent take-home wage, win bonuses that they earned, do something they love, travel the world and play games.

Any strength, stamina, or speed job can be accomplished 10,000x better by a machine. What we need today, and in the future, is brain speed, strength and stamina. Video games equate to sports + brains + buttons and levers. It is precisely the direction humanity is moving.

The current Olympics is filled with outdated, dead-end events. Fifty-thousand years ago, being able to run fast and jump high was extremely useful; quite possibly essential to survival. Today, unless you're a criminal escaping from the cops, these abilities are almost 100% useless.
