Oil is not an infinite ressource. So, if the US had actually had high taxes on gas the last 40 years and therefore most likely reduce their consumption gas prices today would be lower.

as somebody who has lived in both countries (US/GER) I have to say, yes, gas is still cheaper over here compared to germany, but you also (have to) drive a lot more! in germany, i would do a 60km roundtrip maybe once a month. over here, let's say a 40 mile roundtrip, that's nothing. it really isn't. happy hour after work at the beach, on a friday? jup, there you go. the distances are just toally different over here. not to mention that there isn't any public transportation (unless you go to nyc or boston etc...). which sucks. i miss riding the subway in cologne...

oh and yes, cars are fucking cheap here compared to germany as well. a friend of mine bought a new GTI, built in wolfsburg, for $24.000. in germany it's like what, 30.000eur?! i still don't get it...

And imo half of the reasons why they half to drive long distances are selfmade. Almost no public tranportation to speak of, Suburbs that are miles away from everything. Pretty much no multi story houses in smalles cities wasting lots of space.

And even if that wasn't the case it still is no justification for wasting fuel. As in drive up the driveway to the mailbox in an airconditioned car and drive back to the house.
Or drive a car that uses more than 10l/km.
Choosing a car with more than 3l displacement and without a turbo, etc.

And if gas had been more expensive people would have adopted just like they are doing now!

Oh another example, I took a few pictures of my high school's parking lots. I'd say about 400 cars and 15 bikes, at my school in Germany the bikes were clearly the majority, followed by busses and those who drove did it in car pools :P

Needless, to say I got some good reactions when I showed the Germans the American pictures and vice versa.

Austin, TX has plenty of bikers (and walkers), and all but 1 office I've worked in has a shower for folks who use that to get to work (no, not McDonald's). But when I ask people in other places I go "is it walkable?" they look at me as though I asked "can I please have a handjob?"

When I was staying with family, I walked 2 blocks to get food, they ask why I DIDN'T drive (gas was $1.50/gal back then, though). Yeah. fucked up on gas fumes, heh.

I stayed with my dad in Denton TX when I was younger. I had a job at a burger joint and used to walk to work (20 mins) . I used to get people stopping at the side of the road asking if my car had broken down ;)
