I'd agree with this but add ZDaemon ( www.zdaemon.org ) if only because of the super newbie friendly coop. Warsow is a possibility if you live in EU but last I checked the USA community was too small and disorganized to make it worth while playing here.

I think it depends on your tastes... what kind of 'action' you prefer? I think Quake is an odd franchise that manages to straddle many styles of gameplay (from QW, Q2, VQ3 and CPM, and Q4) while still maintaining the classicalist fundamentals.

Well... like the poster above wrote, depends on your taste. QW and Q3 CPM are the fastest and action packed, and both (especially QW, though) have an extremely steep learning curve. Q2 and VQ3/OSP are relatively slow, and involve a good bit more strategic gameplay (depends on who is playing who, though), with VQ3/OSP being slightly more pace oriented than Q2, which is the slowest game of the series. I can't say much about Q4, because i haven't played it that much, but i think it's safe to say it's the most newbie-friendly game (being the newest of the series and all).

you can gain speed faster with strafe jump in Q4 also you can maintain/increase speed around the corners and on stairs with crouch slide.

in vq3 you strafe jump slower and you have to stop/slow down at corners.

You can increase g_speed to 99999999999999999 in Q4 but CPMA has it disabled therefore Q4 faster than CPMA flawless logic.

q4 is exactly like q3 with slightly faster speed and crouchslide, smaller hitboxes, a shittier netcode, and only a few good maps as opposed to the many of q3. Also the RL is used way more in q4 than q3 now a days :p

the one game where you stand the best chance to do well imo. not fun to go up against a whole community of people who play well, for some. I even thought warsow was hella fun when i could win 90% of my games after a day of playing or so until the fun went away when they nerfed the very powerful secondary "railgun" and also people got better

i'd say qw has the steepest learning curve. because all the people playing it have just excelled way too much for someone new to deathmatch gameplay to have fun.

quake 2 and quake 4 i personally wouldn't try.

then there's vanilla quake3(vq3) and challenge promode(cpm).
cpm is what i prefer, alltho i play both.
i'd have to say that the learning curve for vq3 is much higher then for cpm. but that has less to do with the gameplay and more with the competition. in vq3 you have clans and leagues and lots of good aimers that play alot.
in cpm you have a few very good players. but there isn't really this big competition going on. there are no real clans or teams.
i play cpm for maybe a few months now, mostly teamdeathmatch and i'm having fun, despite the fact that most of the other players have been playing the game for several years.
cpm tactics are easier to grasp then vq3 tactics. you dont watch out not to pick up a gun too much or things like that, because you can drop them. the gameplay isnt as cessy and the quad does real damage :)

As everyone said, it depends what you're looking for in the game you want to play.

So tell, do you have some certian criterias? Do you mind if it'll take you a great deal of time before you get up to a level where you actually have a chance against the opponents, or do you want a game where you quicker can pick it up and do alright, do you care about how the graphics are? What sort of community do you expect to get into, do you care about the community? Do you want to play entirely for fun or do you also want to compete in tournaments?

When answering some of those questions I think it'll be easier to narrow down exactly what quake is best for you.

if your question is which quake you would like best i know you have to try them all :

all quakes play alittle bit different but have all great qualities.
depends on your preferences which you will like most.
(hey it doesnt need that much time to see what suits you. watch some demos, some vids of good players and play some games vs bots or jump throught the maps)


if your question is : i wanna play the game which will be played by most people and in most tournaments then there are only 2 choices:

1. install quake3 together with the osp mod and play vq3
2. install quake3 and the cpma mod and vote the vq3 gameplay

i recommend installing both mods, then playing and chosing the one you like more. dont ask too many people about their opinions - and make your own choice. unless you are very short on time - then i recommend you to search in which mod there are better servers around for you with people joining fast or already on it.

How many q3 clans are there these days??
In qw u have 70 clans in eql (ww.eql.nu). theres about 8 or more ppl in every clan. U also have a rookie divison with about 7 clans or so.

Theres a LOT of tournaments in qw. Just recently there was dreamhack, and now qh lan is comming up with 1on1, 2on2 and 4on4 tournaments. And all types of online tournaments, ie duelmania etc.

I played q2 when it come out, and then started with q3 with q3 test early 99, and played hardcore q3 until 2002, when i switched to qw.
Qw is just more fun and challinging, its more like a drug than q2 or q3, u always want back to the fast action in qw. And having like 5 attack buttons instead of just one in q3 and q2 owns.

U can play 4on4 matches around the clock almost, (kida dead from 6 in the morning to about 12)

The bad thing in qw, is that i almost die behind the pc somethimes in mixes. Like u have gotten lg with full ammo and sneaked into RA and have 200armor and quad is comming up soon and u know u can tourn around the map if u get that quad and manges to take down some enemy rls and secure the RA era. Just fucking owns, my heartbeat is just so fast and it is realy more of a drug than q2 or q3. IT so challinging even i have played quake games for 10 years its still a great challenge, and i love it. there still jumps to practice and qw still feel fresh after 10 years becouse has so many skilled players, u never feel like u have "reached your level" and theres nothing more to learn....

And having like 5 attack buttons instead of just one in q3 and q2 owns.

Quake 4, I used to play Quake 3 and it had its momment, some would say go back to it because the ESWC just picked cpma up. However, Quake 4 is a much more solid game. Better graphics, more advanced movement, and better game play. Quake 3 is ok for netcode I suppose, and their mods have come a long way so there is more to customize and what not; but Quake 4 is a better game, it just needs some q3 fan boys to transition over.

Most of the Quake 4 players that never played Q3 go back to Q4 :). Ill play it off and on for shits and giggles, but Q4 game play is more fun. One thing, hands down that Q3 has is better looking maps, some have been remade for Q4 but the Q3 maps are classic.

whatever it is, dnt play standard quake 3. cpma is pretty good though

if you don't wanna get owned bigtime I suggest you play quake2 because is a little bit more strategic and game speed is a little bit lower (compared to other quake games) imo
and btw playing the legendary q2dm1 The Edge is a must :)
but if you have chosen q3 then I recommend you playing osp or cpma vq3 because cpm is too fast and you stand no chance there; after you will be more skilled you could change the mod or even the game but as for beginning I don't see you peachefully playing CPM and getting ur ass beaten every time with scores like 80-0, I am talking about the motivation to play

Getting owned is no big deal, in fact I get more motivation to play after I get owned.

You can say that for the first dozen or so times.... but after months and months, it starts sucking big time.

Was this way for me when I started CPM. The only reason why I kept playing was there are some genuinely cool people that play CPM (both European and North American players). And also, a lot of the top tier players play on occasion, so playing against the great players is always good for a laugh (at yourself, ofc.)

Well, you will be getting owned no matter what game or mod you play until you have at least a few months of playing. I recommend playing q3 cpm and cpma vq3, i play them both and enjoy them both, however i'm much better at vq3 because i have played it a lot more :p
I'm saying q3 because of the upcoming quake zero and most likely it will have the largest community of the quakes. Although qw and q2 are still going strong, it'll be tougher to find games for them than for q3. Q4 is also a great game now imo, but it has hardly any players now and no competitions in north america.

cpm is honestly probably the easiest gametype to get into.
plus you will meet the same players over and over, and they will help you

Yes. U can bind keys so u fire directly from the given weapon on the given key. Like i have space for Lg and sg (instanthit weapons) left alt for nailgun and supernailgun (more like plasma gun in q3) Both i use comortable with my left thumb. My left pinky trow grenades etc. Mouse 1 is like "weapon 7 5 4 2 1" where 7 is rl

Q3 - If you like fast paced and like getting killed 724572 times in 2 seconds then CPMA CPM is what you want. If you are more of a patient player, with the characteristic of liking 1 weapon, then CPMA VQ3 or OSP is ideal. If you like to spawn with all weapons and be in suspicious of cheaters Ra3 is the way to go. Just beware though, people in ra3 have extremely big ego bubbles.

Q4 - Playing online sucks if you don't like like 5 min away from the server..

Personal choice is Q3 CPMA CPM/VQ3 but...like people have said...just try them all..
