It takes SO damn long. I just simulate the battles i know i will win but it still takes forever. I just considered it sucky compared to civilization and deleted it.

I dont really follow the battles either. Just send in my cavalry and zoom up close for the amazing sound when a charging cavalry runs into a group of infantry

Well, I just asked some of my friends, and they did play TA which they absolutly loved, but hate supreme commander. I'm sure many of the bad stories are from people who havent played TA.

TA is still alive and kicking and most of the TA'ers like it, it's not going to replace TA for them in their hearts but many will buy and play it.

first, the interface is the most horrible thing i have ever seen.

secondly, its too much of a turtling game. its very hard to put any kind of pressure on your opponent at the start of the game due to the strength of the defences and the fact that the commander rapes quite severely.

thirdly. the maps in the beta are all shit. like really shit.

T1 mobile artillerys outranges the T1 defence, mass some of those along with the primary rush units and things should be kinda ok. Then you got air to combine with that. Haven't played the 3.8v though where they made some changes to the mantis (cybran assault bot) and T1 AA defence. :I

i'm not into RTS games so...

micro is basically when you control alot of stuff at the same time, very very fast. if you have good apm you usually have good micro aswell (apm = actions per minute)

im not 100% sure but this is what i think it means ;D

macro is kind of like a script that you repeat.. but it doesn't belong in games :)

Link knows nothing! Macro is controlling facilities and economy, production etc. While micro is controlling units and such.

micro = moving your units around, targeting/fleeing etc. to make them efficient.
Macro = building efficiently and properly, using most buildings to their most potential.

First, the interface is good, very similar to most RTS games infact. It's a proven style.

Secondly, I guess you haven't played it enough. I've been playing it a lot over the past week with my brother and some friends. We all played Total Annihilation, so it's been easy to pick up SupCom. Our games usually last about 30-45 minutes game time (which equates to 15-22.5 minutes real time, about the same for the average wc3 game). It's about using the right strategies against what they have, and if you play right, wins can come quickly.

Thirdly, I agreed, there are some really shit maps in beta, but it's beta, and there's probably going to be another ~25 maps in retail. The 2 player map is pretty good and the 4 player sand map is good too. The rest are far to big to play right now and the game just lags up (at least for me)

Obviously micro isn't totally useless (there's a lot of situations where certain micro will give you big advantages in battles) but I agree, it plays a much smaller role in this game than it does in WC3/SC for example. The balance is that macro (large scale management ie. building/base/strategic management) is hundreds of times more important and more intense than most RTS games. Tabbing between 10-15 engineers keeping them all individually busy across the map, whilst trying to manage your resources, prepare your strategic attack and monitor the enemy get's a little confusing at times.

I couldn't really care if it gets played professionally or not. It's an awesome game and a lot of fun to play. Try playing some 1v1s on the 2 or 4 player map on fast speed (ranked games are normal speed) and you'll see how awesome the game can be.

loads of space within the interface is empty, not used, and simply reduces the game window and makes it alot less pleasant.

there are also a load of resource hungry features that no1 in their right mind would use, 3d zoomable minimap, i mean how useless is that if u can already zoom out on ur main screen.

the focus on macro means that the meat of the game is in the build order. \o/ yay \o/ queued build order ftw???? i dnt think so.

also, the little land bumps are just frustrating, your units cannot fire over them etc, makes the unit battles pretty damn random with one tiny little bump in terrain stopping ur attacks getting thru.

this is truly an example of a strategy game with hardly any depth. the tech tree makes countering your enemies units a matter of simply outmacroing him. every game will be the same, at a decent level, there will be one uberstrat and thats all you'll see.

i guess you get spoilt when you play TAspring with AA for too long...(altho it also had some bad flaws)

Played Greenhaven the other day, was one of the best games because of the differing terrain, it required strat unlike the uninteresting flat maps. Ala Gasplant Plains.

Same as the previous point. They have also already stated the game engine _isn't_ optimized yet, as they are trying to work on gameplay related issues before doing the final engine optimization.

It means the meat of the game is in outsmarting your opponent by countering, i.e. making sure your defence will counter his attack, making sure your attack will counter his defence, harassing (e.g. bombing resource structures that have no anti-air), preventing him from harassing you, etc.

Surely that's an example of where there's more depth in the game and where micro, well thought out strategies and awareness comes in handy?

Not really understanding what you mean here. If you mean you will need to build units that counter his units then obviously. That's the same in almost every RTS game. If you're talking about outmacring so your base becomes better then that's not really going to be a huge issue "at a decent level". It's going to be more about harassing and intervening with your opponents build orders to mess them up.

That's exactly what beta and patches are for. Imbalances are being worked out. There's already been gameplay changes. ;)

They stated on the forums that the engine isn't optimized and that they will be doing it after the gameplay and interface bugs/problems are worked out.

Not exactly. Example - Player A has 30 bombers, Player B has 10 air to air fighters. Another example - Player A has 50 heavy artillery, Player B has 10 heavy tanks. The list goes on, but the point is that there's a hell of a lot more than just "the massing of troops".

ive bben playing it more, and it has to be said, its better than i iniatially thought. have even had some mental games, an ally spamming t1 units and ferrying them across the map to constant harass. even when enemy had t2 tanks and stuff, it was funny.

Aside from my shit computer not being able to keep up, the engine is so unoptimized that large games seem to slow down a lot after 45+mins and I find it really frustrating playing without fast game speed ;)

Can't wait till they tidy it up so we can play proper 2v2/3v3/4v4s :D

It's a bit like q2 vs q3: A hell lot more strategic and tactical, but way less spectacular direct combat.

(in regards of supcom vs SC or the like)

The problem is to make the game to comparible speed and skill levels to games like SC and WC3 you really have to play it with fast game speed. But with fast game speed, the combat seems to be ridiculously quick. For example, 20 mins game time into a 1v1 I have usually got about 10 T3 seige bots. From that point to winning the game can take as little as 20 seconds (in 9/10 of the games I play, where the opponent is pretty new).

The game _can_ have spectacular combat though. I've had a few games on normal game speed with some pretty crazy, epic long lasting battles. It's just a lot different to WC3 style battles.

I wouldn't be surprised if SupCom is never picked up as a competetive game. But I also wouldn't be surprised if a mod of SupCom _is_ picked up as a competetive game.

quiet jabmerio, the game is awful, too slow, involves you twiddling your thumbs for most of the game.

pure macro based game if anything which tends to suck if you are used to playing sc/wc3.

No hotkeys, the GPGNet AMM system seems pretty bad from what i can see, as in you can cancel the search as soon as you find out who you are playing.

Simple things such as double tapping a control group to focus your fov onto a unit are missing.

There are tonnes of small things which can make it better, but its still not going to be the next starcraft, like TillerMaN claimed it to be.

Ya, there is little interface things missing, like shift+number to add units to a hotgroup and double tapping a number to focus on a hotgroup. I agree there should also be some kind of building hotkeys and that the auto match maker should be tweaked. Infact, I had a list of like 15 issues which I submitted via the feedback system and posted a few on the forums. Remember, it's a beta test and you're a beta tester. ;)

But really, the game is made for casual gamers and I don't think it's awful or slow. I love it :D You should give it another chance and come play with us _FOR FUN_. Notice that word - fun. I'll be waiting for you! >D

It has to be said that the game hasn't even been released yet. I remember TA looked flashy in the beginning and i was in awe when i first played the demo. However, all the tiny nifty features you needed to win a competitive game of TA came to my knowledge when i tried out the game like years after.
Stuff like line bombing (microing bombers to make them drop more bombs than they should be able to in one long run, by clicking on more destinations as they starts dropping bombs), roach bombing (loading roach bombs into transports and ctrl+d'ing them to destroy hoards of pelicans, which was a powerful unit on sea maps like GoW) and so on are techniques that are exploited when the game matures which can add to the skill set of a game. Regarding Supcom i fear that build orders etc will be dumbed down by someone who creates the magic formula on every map with all the new resource techs. The ability to upgrade mexxes can really boost your economy, i hope the tuning down of the extractors fixed this.

I think that this will be an awesome game in 2on2/4on4 though so i'm really hoping that they won't make any weird moves these upcoming months in time for the release.
