probably doesn't matter to much anymore, since there are brightskins now (enemymodel */pm). but yes, picmip 5 is considered to be easier, because you can focus on enemys better.

r_picmip 5 is the way to go. You generally can't go any higher mainly because most official servers limit it to 5. Don't forget your nomips!

Well, it seems americans have been stricter about what is cheating since the beginning of quake. Before it was with fov and brightskins in QW, now it's other things + brightskins (UT2K* brightskin disccusions anyone ?).

The idea is to use what you like, so try different values and see how it goes.

there higher you go there lower the res for the textures will become, and this usually means less stress to the eyes. Also it might be helpful for some weapons as the weapon effects get picmipped too --> shaft can become transparent and so on (read the Docs about how to stop this). Back in the days some tournaments (and QuakeCon still does iirc) had picmip limited to max 5, but nowadays no one really cares and it's no problem to use higher values.

still, I recommend 5 together with cg_nomip (depending on whatever you like)

edit: afaik it was once introduced because higher picmip values made the blood disappear that was drawn on your screen when you took damage, but osp/cpma allows you to disable these gfx now anyway

It also had something to do with floor grates turning transparent at picmip >5 on q3dm12 when it was played in tdm.

You can't change anything but remove the bobbing in OSP with cg_drawgun 2. In CPMa you can change the position of the gun, check the docs located in \cpma\ . Don't think there's another way to 'center' the weapons in Q3 :)

Hmm couldn't find it myself when I had a quick look into the docs. But as I just tested offline cg_gunOffset "x y z" still seems to be working :)

You might have to adjust it for every weapons as it looks a bit different for different weapons (append it to your weapon binds).

either r_picmip 0 or r_picmip 128 in my opinion, either detailed or smooth, no smudgy inbetweens :D

r_picmip 16 is the highest imo, it slopes after that.. picmip 128 is equal to r_picmip 8 i think

afaik it depends on the texture size and is different for every texture depending on the quality it has, I think in most cases 9 already reaches the max (min) quality you can get.

Yes but that's just because of texture resolution.
Everytime you increase picmip by 1, you increase the lowest mipmap level (best detail). Which means the best texture resolution will be half what it was.
Eventually, you will reach a point where you're at the highest possible mip level (a 1x1 texture). The bigger the textures, the higher the number of mip levels to go down to 1x1, the higher r_picmip you have to input.

Seeing as vq3 doesn't really go above 512*512 textures, the highest picmip would be 9, let's say 10 because there are probably some maps around with a 1024*1024 texture or two.
picmip 16 would allow you to bring textures sized 65536*65536 down to 1*1 :o

If you are goig to play newer games or Q4, your best bet is playing with max detail and start getting used to it.

Anyway, I don't know why people have trouble playing with picmip 0 as apposed to 3 or 5 or whatever. I rather have smooth looking textures than out of place blurry ones, and for those of you that say 'I can't see with picmip 0' go get your eyes tested.

My eyes are fine, and I can't play Q3 with picmip 0 or 1, because the high frequency detail of many Q3 textures in high motion kills my eyes. I can play some other games with low picmip with no pain. I'm sure there are some people around with the same issue.

maybe i'm wierd but my eyes get those thin red lines when i play with picmip <5, the most odd thing is that i don't get that in other games like cs or WoW.

it might be that q3 is a bit faster than the others but i dunno.

imo higher picmip settings effects your rl aim for the worse, the lack of detail in some situations effects your ability to acuratly judge the speed direction of a moving target as you have no background detail to gauge against.

yeah, thats one of the advantages of using lego quake gfx (GL_SOMETHING_FARTHEST or some such iirc), however makes ur screen look like vomit :)

The eye judges velocity by relative movement - since the only thing behind a player is largely a blank wall you're shooting yourself in the foot using high picmip unless there is a sufficent amount of brush work on the map.

picmip 5 is still working fine for me, and you can still cheat some with e.g. texturemode to get more "details"

don't know how it is with e.g. picmip >8 as it's been ages since I tested that one

The only real advantage of using high picmip is the fact that on some maps with high picmip like 10 or so you can see through some objects like grate floors, but if you need to use this kind of cheat then your already dead...

I believe this is why some leagues capped it at 5 as its safe and doesn't distort the map.

gl_nearest is fairly interesting hack for various reasons, also r_simplemipmaps has an interesting effect on textures
