word... same thing about trance/techno... no fucking instruments there either ;)

of course, no instruments. they just hum into a mic. well done. good observation.

the observation is that hip hip and trance just insn't music

please. im interested to here your definition of 'music'.

it amaze me you're american... "hear" would be the correct spelling.

If your comment was a sarcasm, why bother to reply?

My definition of music is the form where people uses their hands to create it, not by computers.

its a common mistake/typo. its all down to the imagination and creation, hands are just are completely seperate thing.

What about something like William Orbit - Pieces in a Modern Style. All classical tracks that everyone can agree is music, but all done solely on a computer via software. Does it still count as music?

i thought i was talking about my own opinions and not "everyone" elses. For me hip hop (did anyone notice my hip hip typo?) and trance/techno/etc doesn't feel like music, real music for me is used by guitars, bas, drums etc. Even tho i love the good old amiga "music".

There's no point in proving someone wrong for their own opinoins, it just doesn't work that way :)

Well, it's perfectly possible to prove someone's opinions wrong if they state them in the kind of way you just did.

Saying "I don't like hip hop or trance" is an opinion, saying that "these are not music because they are made on a computer" gives the illusion of being a fact made to back up your opinion.

you need something in order to believe in it.
And no, you can't prove what i feel wrong, how would you know?

it doesnt mastter what you feel is right or wrong, if youre clearly mistaken :)

There is a certain skill in syncing records and all that. It's definitely not easy but I don't think they count as a musical instrument persay. My ivory negro.

So back it up Whorebitchslutmofo, fore I pull out my nine and make you a lead sandwich. Whattup now.

Say that last line in your head slowly and with the highest class british accent imaginable. Tea and crumpets Lady biaatch?
As for "pac" I was more interested in what he had to say than the actual integrity his music held as an art form. All I know is that in the past few years as I have been learning more and more instruments and singing I don't listen to my old hip-hop/rap stuff. Maybe that is worth noting. However I wish I could get paid a couple million for saying "Babygirl, uh" in a deep voice once or twice on a track. If it sounds good to you go with it. Increase tha peace brandan of tahoe. Increase the peace.

serious? call him "edwardo" or "spirrico magnifico"

Kniz :)

just because they use keyboards/computers or whatever that doesn't mean the dont compose the tunes.
I find acceptance in trance and techno way easier than hip hop tbh.

hip hop isnt music?

did i say that?

replied to the wrong person.

You can't spell crap without rap.

lol, n1

Just face it - music develops. As a musican myself I don't look down on other genres, I try to find inspiration and new things from others. No mather if it's some fucked up looking guy with long, black hair, screaming about satan/whatever until his throat starts bleeding or if it's a afroamerican guy with way to big clothes, rapping about his bad childhood á gangstastyle.

They've all got some kind of message and their way to express themselves.

As for hip-hop - you can't deny it - It's becoming more and more acceptable (turning into mainstream) and even more popular, especially by the younger generation.

And what about electronic music then? It's like some people thinks that you don't need any kind of musical talent to make such music. You're wrong. Almost all the bigger names in todays trance/techno/dance scene has years of musical background of instruments, especially the piano.

I'd like to see anyone without any musical background infront of a pair of Roland JP-8000 synths, with either Logic or Cubase SX 2.0 on their screens trying to make music. Good luck.

This is the most ridiculous arguement I have ever read. As a fan of Hip Hop myself I must enlighten you of your incessant ignorance. What defines music? Are you sitting comfortably? Then we shall begin...

The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.
Vocal or instrumental sounds possessing a degree of melody, harmony, or rhythm.

A musical composition.
The written or printed score for such a composition.
Such scores considered as a group: We keep our music in a stack near the piano.
A musical accompaniment.
A particular category or kind of music.
An aesthetically pleasing or harmonious sound or combination of sounds: the music of the wind in the pines.

I think I'm justified in saying that Hip Hop is music. How you can slander Tupak Shakur for not playing an instrument is beyond me. The guy was a rap artist, he didn't intend to play the freakin' violin. He wrote lyrics to songs which a lot of people casually brand as writing music in the rap/hip hop game. Infactamundo, there is a course in an American University revolving around Tupak Shakur and his lyricism. The answer to your most stupid question is no, 2pac couldn't play an instrument but he was one of the finest creative poets America has produced.

Oh and if you understood ANYTHING remotely Hip Hop you'd realise the amount of work put in at the studious in making some of the most rhythmic and harmonious sound or combination of sounds conceived. If you really want to take it out on someone go and tell us all how slipknot seem to think shouting incoherant trite is a justified way to fame and fortune.

Archive.

Okay brandan, maybe you're right about a few things but I still stand against some of what you said. I can't say I disagree with you totally but you are making very general mistakes. I'm not the only one who is presumptious here, my vocabulary is limited because I only listen to rap? Wrong. My English Literature degree didn't entail any form of rap lyricism iirc. I listen to all sorts of music and I do infact listen to Bob Marley a lot. My dad's £70,000 reggae collection caters quite nicely for that (thanks dad).

2Pac is by all means an 'artist' and a 'rapper'....

"One, such as an actor or singer, who works in the performing arts. "

"writer, who is able by virtue of imagination and talent or skill to create works of aesthetic value, especially in the fine arts. " Glad we agree on that then.

I love dictionary.com, it somewhat helps to ... explain things to people from time to time.

A poet "A writer of poems." Would you care to take a look at 2Pac's poetry that can be found on his fan websites? I think you'll agree that he was a poet and furthermore "One who is especially gifted in the perception and expression of the beautiful or lyrical." Most of his poems when not touting about violence and crimes were indeed beautiful. But from a pop culture stance I can see why most people would only see 2Pac as one sided.

/me scans through smurkeys post.

so basically you agree with brandan, but justifying 2pacs immediate lack of musical talent with the amount of people who can appreciate it and his poetic abilities.
I'm not sure whether that says more about the artist, or the audiance.

I don't even pretend to know anything about hiphop, I'm just going by whats written here.

agreed.

music or not it sells so whine all you want ...

Archive.

It sells yes, but that doesn't mean you have to like it or listen to it. I can see where this guy is coming from too, all to often you hear rap/hip-hop songs that are just recycled riffs from other songs which they've put a beat to and created a few words to 'rap' to. It doesn't seem to taxing, although smurkey seems to know more about this then us, and maybe it does take along time to get it sounding right in the studios etc.

Personally I prefer original music i.e guitars drums etc, proper bands who have sat down and created riffs and decent lyrics, then practiced for hours on end to get it sounding right.

Mind you I'm biased as I am a guitar player.

in all types of music you will get poor quality tracks mainly formed from previous music, you may say X music is shit but you must put up a better example of what music you think is better and why, you'll if you give poor examples and then for your own choice beat up the best exampleas you can.

stop for five minutes to use your brain and think about the things you like about music, now imagine everyone having different feelings and emotions inside themselves and think to yourself that maybe people will want to listen to different music for those reasons, now you will see how pointless the angle is saying one type of music is better than the other.

Believe me theres plenty of unoriginal music in all genre's.

Idont know why anyone would feel the need to slate Tupac, he was oneof the few artists that tried to highlight the plight of people in the machine, which is more than we can say to alot of the pricks out there performing nowdays.

I fully share your opinion on this subject.

If you want to enjoy another gem in a trashed genre, trance, give Shpongle a try.

Surely not the best song from them but im limited by 10 mb webspace atm, most of their songs are 10mb+ ;)

http://members.brabant.chello.nl/~r.bal2/Shpongle-dmt.mp3

Shpongle does indeed own, its just wrong to not call that music :/

All the music i have is psy-trance, goa-trance, ambient dub, ect.. music made with mostly computer.. It's certainly music, and as i've listened to this kind of music since i was born i feel that almost all other types of music are ridiculus :p

Went from prodigy(charlie, out of space, vodooppl ect) to Infected Mushroom (disco mushroom, the lost symphony, dancing with kadafi, the messenger) to Hallucinogen (lsd, horrorgram, shamanix) and now more into the dubish side and lotsa mixed stuff dunno really what it is; shpongle(shpongle falls), shulman(small grey creatures), jaia (l'ivresse des profondeurs), ott(smoked glass and chrome), kundara(apple flavored clouds), entheogenic(level one), celtic cross(darshannon), younger brother(evil and harm).. The list goes on.. right now im listening to some bluetech (white magnesia) (!) .. . sry for boring you all, just trying to convert some souls i suppose.. try ehh listen to any of it.. cuz it all owns.. :]

Every generation has people that say 'that isn't music'. But the answer is: music is what people say it is. And people like to listen to something rhythmic, so they call it music...

People used to say that jazz wasn't music, that art had to show images from the world, and that poems had to have rhymes and structure. Now, they say that an empty white room with hidden speakers playing the sounds of dying children and a placard saying 'fhrblg pabst' is art, music, and poetry at the same time.

Anyway, what people like to listen to as 'music' is strongly determined by what they have listened to in the past, and only a little bit by any universal standards. These people happen to be accustomed to easy-to-make ripoff sounds. Good for them - they can always enjoy new music since it is so easy to make, whereas you have to wait for 'original' things to develop. People who jam to non-copyrighted elevator music are probably the happiest ones.

I'm a guitar player. I like the rhythm, but i dont respect hip-hop as skill, inspiration-like music. The emotion beneath music played in instrument generates a new kind of feeling to who plays it. Its like a river through you thoughts and hands, you create, you tear apart while you create and play at the same time.

Couldn't have put it any better mate beautiful discription, sounds like you play the acoustic? just guessing though.

I'd rather listen to the Cheeky girls than rap/hip-hop.

apocalyptica... =)

grunge... :P

This is why i listen to BlackMetal.

No you listen to blackmetal becuase you need to unleash your sexual anger and frustration for being a 28 year old semi bearded bum fluff spouting golden virginia smoking virgin.

Hey wait a second i'm stereo typing sorry.

Heh I agree with you about 'lyricists' but ultimately the ones you speak of are no more inferior than the narcissistic wafer-thin wailings of an indy prima donna or the angst-ridden whine of emo front-men. They are no more 'artists' than Missy Elliot as far as I'm concerned and are often far less profound.

As far as instrumentation goes, I'm surprised as an admirer of the heavily-produced Cinematic Orchestra you're hinting at the un-artistic nature of electronic music! Unfortunately most people are ignorant of electronic music, and particularly contemporary forms of electro-jazz that have hardly penetrated the UK and US. The hackneyed phrases trotted out by assorted posters on this thread along the lines of "electronic music isn't real music (and it suxors)" are opinions worthy of an ignorant 17-year old - which is what I was when I last remember sharing them.

In pursuit of original, creative and stimulating music I find myself rejecting lyrics outright and rarely listen to any artist that doesn't significantly utilise electronic production and programming. The only pure instrumentation I listen to I guess are the works of the Jazz legends.

LOL well put Quiff ;)

The elitist views of alot of people can stem from there own fear that someone less skilled can make better music with lower quality equipment.

Agreed... though I've been saying this for ages... rap's just the current "in thing" I guess. Personally, I hate it. The only thing that makes it even semi-worthwhile is when someone can rap well (see: old Run DMC type shit. I miss that stuff), but most of the time it isn't the case, and it's just some deep-voiced moron spouting bogus lyrics.

Another thing I hate in music today is all these friggin' women thinking they're talented just because they can make their voice change in pitch much like a young boy going through puberty. Four words: SHUT THE FUCK UP (bitch).

I'm sick and tired of this "MTV / american idol world", but then again I have been for ages now so it's nothing new. Mostly I just try and tune myself off as much as possible :P

Also something that made me sick was the "mtv european music awards" and all the same fucking sellout piece of shit artists over there, when you know if it was a REAL award show we'd have fucking the best house/dnb artists like hybrid and ltj bukem up on stage, alongside with the best metal in the world... yeah J-Lo you're obviously the best thing to come out of europe ever. Sit the fuck down you stupid whore.

Heh, sorry, you can tell I'm a bit angsty about this topic :)

word man! yeah i listen to a bit of hip hop and rap etc... but music it is not. they have zero talent, which is the worst thing. Seems all my peers are interested in following whatever is "cool" instead of exploring new types of sounds.

the way it is, and always will be is that most people have no clue about music, but pretend to have a clue in order to appear cultured or something. I think if they just picked up some books it would unlock a lot of more sophisticated music that is locked to them.

i agree 100%

lol so many of you don't know anything about rap... dmc and co great rappers? rofl i cba explaining to you good rap neither, you'd only whine some more.

honest to god, sometimes there is nothing new in most of its, it always seems to be the same subject, same type video and really without listening to it 100 times over and maybe searching for lyrics you can really say you understand it all?

Music --

1. The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.

6. An aesthetically pleasing or harmonious sound or combination of sounds (like "music of the wind").

I think both techno and rap qualify using these definitions. Does it take talent to make the music of Tupac or Missy Elliot? Sure, just not traditional musical talent. It's more a talent for hearing similar patterns and harmonies across multiple genres and combining them to produce a new work. Tupac had a message he wished to deliver through his music, Missy just does it to entertain. I find nothing wrong with either if people enjoy it.

I do agree that they need to give credit where credit is due, though. Yes Missy/Tupac/whoever had a hand in developing the overall work, but not to the extent Elton John has when composing and performing a completely original work. You could take the talent of all the rap artists combined and they could not match the talent of somebody like Elton John (not to gush over Elton, he is just a good example). That does not mean rap artists do nothing original however.

Archive.

That's true of most mainstream music -- it is all fabricated by the recording labels and marketed. When you saturate the market with the idea that only a few types of music are cool, everybody is listening to it, and the bands are talented, young people start to believe it. It's all they ever hear and are basically programmed to believe it is good. Don't limit it to just hip-hop or techno, it's true of rock/punk/ska/salsa/jazz etc.

The artists are just the tools for the industry to present its fabricated hits. There isn't a single superstar band that couldn't be replaced. It really doesn't matter who in particular makes the music, just that somebody does.

Archive.

"There isn't a single superstar band that couldn't be replaced."

Now or in the past?

I hope he means now. I'd disagree if it was ever, there are so many revolutionary bands that have created genres on their own.

Agreed, or just simple cases of right people with the right talents in the right place at the right time :p

Like Elton John ever actualy made anything original apart from conecpt albums in the 70s that really sucked.

but if someone wants to love his music thats fine and I think thats great, just dont put him up there as Mr original please.

People love to imagine that well known accoustic artists do these amazing elaborate processes in preperation for creating and making music, that maybe rap stars or electronic style musicians dont, silly idea, there is really no differance from a blind man in the bushes hitting a tree with a stick as he likes the sound it makes to a 2 year gay spurting Elton John album, no intention to mention Elton and man in the bushes banging at all.

Well, considering I worked in Hollywood for a couple years at a recording studio, I've witnessed these so-called processes in action. We had rap groups coming in as well as Earth, Wind, and Fire (whose album is coming out soon). Two totally opposite extremes.

The only reason rap is given any attention by labels is because it is fast, cheap, and easy to produce. It takes little talent on the part of the artist, and little originality. Combine those together, market it because it's "cool to be a thug," and you have a plantinum album that cost next to nothing to make. It's a great vessel for a quick buck and that is the only reason any studio ever does rap.

Elton John not orginal? That's just ignorant. I don't care for him myself but at least I give him credit for what he does.

Yes to produce poo rap, just like if you put aload of guitar playing students in a shed for 20 quid you can also produce poo.

Name one song of Eltons that is highly original and good.

Good is subjective. It doesn't matter if I rattle off a few of John's hits because you'll just say "no those are crap, etc."

Look, I know you like rap. You don't agree with brandan's or my position on rap because you like rap. That's fine, to each his own. I'm not going to waste my time trying to debate with somebody who is not open for debate though. You like what you like and that is fine with me, but it doesn't make the truth of the matter any less a reality.

But I dont ever listen to rap at all, and havent done for years since i was a teenager.

What i'm saying is you cant slate a whole genre of music by giving worst case scenarios up against best case scenarios for the choices you have, that way of talking about something normally highlights your own biased view and therefor shows everyone your closed minded.

Regarding Elton well name the tracks and i'll compare them to tracks that came out previously by other artists.

my cousin's father's father is one of the Sumner brothers!

Missy Elliot has some of my respect. She does strange things with her lyrics/music that occasionally sound good, though the lyrics are generally bad and she can't sing. Rap as a whole sounds terrible to me, though depending on the atmosphere, "50 cent" sometimes sounds good... Sometimes. Yes, as a matter of fact, inebriated girls doing "the grind" usually happen to be atmosphere required.

I didn't appreciate techno until I heard it on drugs. I now personally enjoy it (the music). I love how the songs are designed as if they occupy space, with ambient quieter sounds in the background and sharp beats in the foreground. The songs can also be appreciated (especially in trance's case) as they entrain brainwaves rather nicely, altering your mood and mental activity level. After a period of repetitive (perhaps monotonous) beats, there's usually a melodious climax of some sort, and when one is in the mood, it really does the trick. Meh!

Yes, "the trick."

"Does it take talent to make the music of Tupac or Missy Elliot?"

... Well... Not that much, I'd reckon.
You have a hundred cheap sounds, some cocky drums and bass, and throw it in the mixer. At least that's what it feels like to me.
The amount of work thrown in when working with a band, when working as a team, is simply bigger.
And as a second answer to the above quote; I feel something is wrong when the quality/style of the music depends on a "hidden team of musicians", and not on the artist him/herself. Takes away some of the character.

Though critizising hip-hop, I'll just have to call it music, 'cause I just don't know what to call it otherwise.
But I can't see any musical talent whatsoever in talking fast to a simpe beat, especially when you'vnt produced it yourself.

And you... uh... SEX-with-a-chair-guy or whatever you name is, you shouldn't label yourself intellectual, it looks a _bit_ ignorant :P

Oh I hardly mention it at all. However, modesty is a luxury you cannot afford if you are used to debating with intellectual giants.

If you like C64 remixes are you old school or past that and now should be labeled Ancient? anyone agree?

something of interest, im in my 3rd semester of music theory and we share the music lab w/ a MIDI class which is composed mainly of ethnic minorities who like to create hip hop beats and the like. the interesting part is ive heard some very good and professional sounding pieces come from people with absolutely no musical background, no training, no prior experience...just banging on a keyboard in some sort of epic fight to defy the metronome.

the best ones do pick up and learn basic theory piecemeal, and to be sure that the essential elements of music are there, though id hardly call it tonal music lol

In my opinion it's all boring. The words are stupidly hard to understand without listening to the tracks 100 times over and searching for lyrics. The content and meaning is typically always the same; girls, drugs, money etc. and the worse "gangsta life". I don't know what is worse, them making a lot of it up/exaggerating extremely or the fans believing it.

Though the art does take skill in regards to presenting, but that's all they do, just the rapping and fast talking repetitive meaningless shite and at the sametime somehow manage to rake in extreme amounts of money, though fair play to them if people take a liking.

although my main interest lies musically in metal and rock (BLACK METAL!!!!) ;)/ guitar music as a whole, i tend to like hip hop/ rap a lot. the problem you mentioned is the problem of every music genre. you have the absolute mainstream band, who are all about production but dont make their music themselves.
but besides the spotlight you have a lot of artists who really care about everything. in germany we have a hip hop band, the fantastischen 4, who even gave an unplugged gig! and they orchestrated it all by themselves. i am pretty sure there are more hiphop artists and musicians like that out there.

so i understand your post more as a general critic towards mainstream music. :)

trance and techo is music but hip hop isnt imo :)

LOL seeing they have their roots in hip hop u dont know what you're talking about

Archive.

Actually no what?

I like to label rap, hip-hop, jazz, blues and other genres as "black music", and then try to steer far away from them. When listening to any of those I just get very, very annoyed instead of soothed. I dislike these genres for some reason, and I hate that the world seems to have been taken over by talentless music makers that rest purely on their brand.

There is no reason why (and I have no idea about these names) 50 Cent is more popular than Naz. None. They sound the same, they have the same (lack of) talent and they rap about the same stupid things.

I dislike popular music, because most of it is commercially produced and has little to no resemblance to music. It's nearly inevitable that if you earn money from making a certain type of music, you'll nearly certainly try to reproduce that, which leads to repetitiveness and shitdom (no, it's not a word).

Archive.

it still is. it is, on the other hand, not 'nigger music.'
that is what we refer to as rap.

i love rap.

rock sucks.

oh ye and most of you are full of shit

I think Hip-Hop is a load of bollocks myself, but then again I think hardcore rock is a load of bollocks as well. Doesnt means its not music or the performers are any less skilled in what they do compared to say Jazz or Classical musicans.

Surely the intereptation of music depends on the individuals preferences?

Archive.

i agree. how anyone can call puff daddy an "artist" with a straight face is beyond disturbing.

Bleh.

Basing your opinion on what you see on television makes you nothing more than just another common misguided musicbasher. There are plenty of great hiphop producers who dedicate time and have the will to perfect the art of completing a beat. 'You dont play any instruments?' Thats just nonsense. If that seriously is an argument, than you should turn on your tv and realize that NO song on television is made with any instrument at all.

If you would actually listen to something that isn't showed on tv with milliondollar videoclips, then maybe you wouldnt have such an odd view of what hiphop is.

Btw, there are many great hiphoppoets out there, you just have to look beyond your 500 channel television (or how many you Americans have), and look underground, where the REAL artists are at. And they dont talk, they rhyme. Rhyming requires far more skill than singing. Try listening to complex rhyme artists (like tonedeff, or the cunninlynguists) for a change.

Don't give your opinion about things that you know nothing about.

Im not a rap fan but your statemens are bullshit and can be used againt rock artists also, Oasis rip off the beatles, beatles ripped off little richard, lou reed spokke not sang.

Problem with rap now days is its become pop music thus it does whatever sells the most music which is bitches and hoes and sooting people
