cant give it up, and i dont have any uni work as of yet. the first week was a week of nothing

freshers week = liver death, well actually all of 1st year is, u pretty much end up having a replacement liver at the end of it!

its uni m8, and if they blocked u off, theres no point trying to do something about it, i tried a few ways round it just so i could download shit, but they cut me off at around christmas time. as for games, u can try finding like minded people and seeing what you can do, i personally tried going down to the geeks that run the security show, and asked them to open the quake3 ports lol... no love

so instead of trying, just go out, have some fun and enjoy urself!

yup m8, thats wot happened to me... i stopped gaming and wasted a hell of a lot of money on partying which i'm now paying back slowly... it was all worth it!

yeah i had the same problem. i just called the local provider and got myself my own line into the "hall of residence" ;) i only lived there for 1 year, own appartement is way better (but also way more expensive)

not much you can do other than get a tunnel.
i ran into the same problem at my uni. they told me that i shouldn't be playing games; i should be studying.... i told them that instead of going out every night, getting drunk like the rest of these idiots, i enjoy playing games; and it doesn't take up that much bandwidth as some think. so there isn't much you can do other than complain. or bring down the entire network completely :D

you can try using hopster to get onto irc. it might help you out with some other things too.

that is so much shit, its like they are encouraging you to go and drink and break our livers. how much of a big deal is it just to let us play q4/wsw/q3/cs anything online? That really is a piss take, i know this sounds omggeeky but w/e. i seriously have to play some online games, like cant they just unblock the ports ffs. i would like to use a webcam too, and be able to visit the Skype website so i can contact my parents (banned lol!)

seriously if anyone has a way around or anything hit me up with it, it will be appreciated. a whole year without online games is like hell tbh.

I agree with u. Partying is all well and good but they over encourage regular binge drinking and its dangerous :S. It's a coverup for how alienated and lonely everyone feels and there should be more to being a student than getting pissed all the time.

i can play wsw and warcraft 3 (only games I have). i also have the same connection as you in uni halls. gl with your problem.

how do you do it then? no tweaking, no proxy progams, it just works?

yeh it just works for me. but its only good after 2am and by then sobreity is out the window. uni halls just suck for gaming : ) take a year out

can even login with wlan as anonymous anywhere at uni, pings <10ms in Q3

cant do anything on the machines at uni tho, stuck with 50mb disk space and linux/unix (well except for some stoneage comps with Win NT). but what for do I have a $ notebook anyway :D

heard master once did some crazy shit to tunnel Q3 protocol through whatever so he could play from work/uni/dunno. :E

u can get ur own dsl line if u need it that bad, but thats not free, or find some other gamers at uni, and play some games with them.

i'll move back home if that happens (moving in some weeks) xD

well I don't play at uni, I tested it for a few minutes and pings were about 9-11ms

at home i get 12+ ms so it's ok B>

Maybe you can play in a really complicated slow annoying way using a proxy server.

there are lots and lots of ways you can bypass their 'firewall.'
it's too difficult to mention, though, and perhaps to difficult to understand without already grasping the basic idea.
it also deeply depends upon the way the network is set up, and so that means that some experience may be required in the thought process.
i would suggest reading, if you wanted to use that method.
however, spyteman clearly has the best idea.
if you don't want any hassle or reading, then don't bother with the firewall.
just find someone's open wireless and piggyback on it.
