well long ago when i did this test regularly with crt (lcd suck even 120hz for this test) we came up with a way to change the screen color values, so you werent necessarily seeing green when it changed but just the light change which increased our times even more. i got down to an avg of 113 with it after 5 clicks. not anymore though since i use 120hz lcd now i get 150's if im lucky :D

Well I find it strange that I got 175 on my first try at my work and I needed to try a few times before I started averaging 180 at home. Hmmm.

May need to try a new mouse. (Abysuss?) Luckily it's not really that much of an issue, in the 30ms extra I'm probably still moving the mouse to the target. I've never felt that people shoot faster than me.

Form what he did to fix it, it's the windows interface, so I don't think it would affect anything ingame. There is no actual delay coming from the mouse, but rather what you see onscreen is delayed.

What you've done on that site and my own experience suggests most of the reaction time research I've read is wrong or missing the whole picture. As far as I'm aware medical science's idea of the lowest reaction times are too high and I've read the claim that it's not possible to train reaction time which is obviously wrong.

Butwhat most people in this thread have done is practice clicking a mouse button I guess, they might not have such fast reactiontimes doing something else, like playing tennis.

These tests have no bearing on quake whatsoever.

You react fast? Without thought? That's alright if you are lining up a rail and he pops out like a fucking rabbit in the wilderness.

But if you get caught off guard by a trap and just twirl your mouse in his general direction and fire off a rocket 20 feet away from the guy that means you fucked up.

Quake has prediction and you need an adequate response to the threat that is incoming. Guy catches you off guard with a RJ, you dont turn and shoot plasma at the fucker all frantic and shit (unless you are av3k) you calmly assess the situation, whip out LG and fuck him up.

Quake is about how fast you can think -> use the right gun -> change into right position for fight -> aim -> then shoot.

Do all of that very quickly, not just fire.

Also, if you are doing the test multiple times you fail, 5 times should be the max. If you do more that means you are getting accustomed to the program and 'guessing' when the boxes are coming, which is like prediction in quake and doesn't show raw reaction time.

Jamalz is actually right. The random time is between certain values, which you quickly learn. You understand that if enough time passes without a change, it becomes imminent. Expecting the event in a small future time frame greatly increases conscious reaction time.

As he said, this is not pure reaction time. Pure reaction time is startle reaction time (unconscious) when you react to something you don't expect. It generally is much faster since it involves different neural pathways.

As an old reactiontimer i can tell you what you need to do is fill your visual field completely, configure "click" to occur on letting the button go, and control breathing, attention and don't be tense; also do it at the right time of day (best results after some quick exercise)

getting that stuff right you cut down 30ms at least. with all that prep you'll be scarfin' down milliseconds in notime :D
