Sounds good and would eliminate the whole spawn kill thing, but TBH it would make games a lot more predictable and probably boring.
There's nothing more better than a mniute left on the clock and notching up 5 frags.
I like things how it is, I would just like to see a bit more though put into the spawn points. The game community can do that.

Dreadful idea to be honest. As some people have pointed out learning the spawn points is part of the game and only people that are rubbish complain about spawn rape. And it would slow the game down way too much.

Maybe the map should be divided into two sections. If you die in section 1, you respawn in section 2. That way you prevent excessive spawn raping since you will always (pretty much anyway) spawn away from your opponent. And your exact spawn position would still be unpredictable since each section consists of maybe five spawn points.

that is basically OSP. spawn furthest, it doesn't stop spawnraping tho.

eh how many times have I not killed my opponent by the grenade launcher on ZTN, just to have him spawning right behind me? many times... of course, it's a lot more frustating when it's the other way around...

now the aforementioned suggestion does not eliminate spawnrape, but it would probably reduce it... or maybe a protective shield like that in UT or some shit...

that's because the spawn furthest is determined of where his corpse is when he respawns. so if you knock him down to the mega hallway he will often spawn at the GL because it is one of the furthest spawns.

The 5 seconds respawntime is a good thing, 10 seconds is just too long.
Choosing a spawnpoint is bad. It would kinda work if it was a point/tennis game (like Hooneymod :), but not in deathmatch.
Also, predictable spawns like in Q3 are stupid as hell too.

Depends on the map methinks, I was thinking about ztn the other day, very easy map to predict spawns - answer, make more spawns! Way harder to remember 30 spawns, and it's really easy to change a map to that, you just need slightly different positions so people don't know EXACTLY where to look.

But remember predictable spawns also gives the dying player knowledge of where he is going to spawn. I don't like the idea of fate deciding I'm going to spawn in the same spot 3 times in a row just when I didn't want it to. Would rather know where I would appear and think about what to do when I do.

10 seconds is too long though, 5 seconds is enough to give some doubt of a spawn point.

doesn't matter if you have 1000 spawns if the map is so small that they're right next to each other.


you know what, I take that back. I though it won't work with spawn furthest, but if you can spawn ANYWHERE with 1000 spawnpoints it will help somewhat.

Lol, atleast you kinda got what I meant, obviously it wont work with all maps, but I was trying to use ztn as an example, on that map, about doubling the amount of spawns would do the trick, it would be predictable, but it wouldn't be 100% sure anymore.

I think a better idea would be to have a more intelligent spawn system. Ie, to avoid spawn camping, have players spawn as far away from an emey as possible, or spawn out of the line of sight of an enemy.

This would help, but those of you who are familiar with ctf1(IU) would understand that half the time you want to spawn as close to your enemy as possible to prevent them from getting away with your flag, or even getting to your flag.

The original idea of being able to choose your spawn point would add another dimension to the game, yes, but would at the same time over complicate things and, I imagine, would take a lot of skill out of having to be spontanious and reactionary with the "random" system.

btw spawn points are already different for different modes (1v1, TDM, CTF)

IT would take the flow out of the game to be honest. They should enforce a lower respawn time as standard in tournaments though. Not 1 second but 5.

The best way to determine spawn points is a system I came up with years ago called "Spawn it lucky", kinda a twist on the Uk tv show strike it lucky/flashing squares.
upon death the player has 5 seconds to re-enter the game. In this time the computer is randomly flashing up each avaiable position at a very fast speed, so fast that there is no way to determine and exact spot, but what happens is when the player presses the fire button, it spawns exactly where they choose.
Although it does not eliminate the potential of spawning right in front of an opponent, it takes away the players frustration because they were in control of where they spawned.
It's designed to reprogram the players interpretation of an unlucky spawn, rather than fix something that is pretty much impossible (with the time a developer would be willing to put in) in game.
Easier to change the players way of thinking, than to code.

Meh, I'm down with randomness. The concept of choosing your spawnpoint just cramps quake's style. It's a classic... Random spawn points should remain an asset of the game just like the classic rg, rl, lg, etc...

Have a spawn frag counter, so lucky bastards that get kills off spawn frags get punished the first time they die by spawning near the nasty green keel over and over :P

I think the way Q3 spawn system works is fine. Once everyone learns the spawns it becomes pretty even and you can evern use the spawning tactically. It can also turn a game into someones favour which at times can be a good thing. Sometimes its bad but then you need luck in a game to some degree as it works both ways.

However if it were to change play should spawn on otherside of the map or different location and repsawn rate should be around 7 seconds.

Perhaps just make it as random as possible, that would be the best idea imo.

Maybe make the fragged player invulnerable for 5 or so seconds so that he has a brief chance to escape after a spawn. But make the enemy still able to affect his physics with his weapons (rockets bounce you about/lg pins you to wall) so at least they can try and prevent you going straight for an armor. This way both players have equal(ish) chance to get to powerup with the fragger rightly having a slight advantage. Dunno if its been done already, got a feeling it has...

A period of invulnerability after spawn sucks. It always annoyed the hell out of me when in ut2k4 you shoot a nice combo in the enemys face only to see it has no effect at all---> enemy escapes around a corner.

Hmm... I don't know what to think about that spawn invincibility period. It would definetly heighten the chase factor of most 1v1s.

But yeah, I'm stickin by my POV. It should be just like Q3. Learn the spawns... create frags... play smart... do what you will...

I think a UT mod did something like that where for the 5 secs you would be protected but if you fired it would turn off....

q4 spawn should be like ut´s spawn, the most far and protected possible. and most of the times on a place near the armor. that sucks sometimes. i think random is better, thats quake, not unreal.

Random is a really flawed idea. Spawn points should be defined on a volumetric basis and it's quite easy to get rid of spawn problems by putting some thought into where they are placed and coming up with a solid layout.

The real problem is map authors are often nowhere near as good as the people who exploit their maps.
But that's a problem in everything, not just games.

i've been thinking that a good potential spawn system would be to have you spawn anywhere that your opponent can't immediately rail you from (just calc a tracer from opponent to spawn and check to make sure there's a wall in between you, or something)

that would prevent the whole "spawn in front of the enemy twice in a row" situations that come up with in qw every so often

for team games, that shitty no skill newbie game halo 1 actually hit it dead on. you always spawn next to a teammate unless all of your teammates are dead, then you spawn as far away from the other team as possible

just make it possible for players to SPAWN TO ANOTHER MAP.
