This is a good point; however in order for this goal of having a completely "shit free" forum, the draconian moderation as seen on team liquid's forum would be needed, and this just isn't feasible with the number of admins on this site.

For me, you either have no/absolute minimum of moderation; or the other end of the spectrum; only one of which is feasible on ESR.

When I first started frequenting ESR, I found the debates, discussions (and retarded) arguments/trolling either interesting, thought provoking (the first one I read was OSP vs CPMA, then xerp etc) or entertaining/hilarious. This forum was different and more liberal than any other I had been to, and that was refreshing and this is what kept making me come back. I don't know of another place on the Internet where a group of people have such a passion/interest co-joined with such (hilarious) absurdity and trolling; it's an eclectic mix that I enjoy being part of.

If there are users that I cannot stand I simply put them on ignore; I can make the choice of what I do/don't want to see without affecting anyone else; as it stands now I dont have so much choice in the matter, it effects everybody AND there is nothing I can do about it. Which is better on paper?!

IMO, at times there is a fine line between trolling and mere abuse; I really do enjoy a good troll, but never reading abuse/hate. I have no problem with "for the lulz", as everyone knows its a joke and not to take it seriously. Well, they should :)

In short; I have no problem with having a joke; and at times i can see how in certain situations it can be uninspiring, and of course when people are abusive/hateful, which is completely unacceptable in my eye.

meh, i don't think the admins are doing anything wrong, but some of them certainly think their moderator status makes them the baddest of asses or something. As long as they attack the stuff that needs their attention and don't nitpick on the small stuff or start being even more biased based on whatever users they like or don't like. I said before a traffic light system is good, admin clicks your posts and it goes amber, then red, if you make another of that type, then you get booted or something, you need a less binary system than at present if you wish to educate people.

Motocross isn't a very large sport in this country, and only "big" events would offer a trophy for the sprogs category. Similar thing with BMX, the kiddies races mean nothing, even the older categories aren't necessarily competetive outside of national level, and even then - it's just the kiddies races, it's more a case of who turns up rather than "raw talent".

i think the most important to thing is to retain the spirit of ESR. that means trolls, insults and tangents shouldn't be moderated unless they spill over in spam, really nasty shit or anything that would hurt the website.

it's a harsh and unforgiving place sometimes for new people, much like quake itself. the ones that stick with it become valued members in whatever demented form they take and that is infinitely better than attracting and retaining boring characters through a 'safe' environment that add nothing that can't be found on a thousand other forums.

no, the 'spirit of ESR' is not trolling or insulting or going on tangents, or 'demented characters', it's on-topic, up-to-date competitive gaming news and discussions. because competitive people participate in this, you get competitive arguments between big egos. however, that is just an unavoidable consequence, not a 'spirit'. personal bashing and competitive trolling, side-effect of the consequence, are totally parallel or even counter-productive to the actual 'spirit of ESR'. if you find trolls and 'demented characters' to be 'valued members' and more exciting than 'boring characters' that help with mouse choices and gaming tactics, than they can be "found on a thousand other forums" that specialize in this, in much larger amounts.
