failed to authenticate with steam (Err 5 (41 comments)
Posted by julios @ 14:44 CST, 18 November 2015 - iMsg
Just joined a server. After a few seconds, got booted with a "failed to authenticate" error. Since then, I haven't been able to properly connect to any servers. It connects, loads, and just as I join, I get booted with the "server disconnected for unknown reason" error.

Sometimes I can connect for a few seconds, but then get booted with that authentication error.

Anyone else having this issue, or know what's up?

Any documentation on the update/release notes? Anyone know if there are plans for such documentation?

Would be nice to know exactly what has changed.

question re: lift off distance (DA 3.5) (2 comments)
Posted by julios @ 20:59 CDT, 27 April 2013 - iMsg
I'm about to pick up a second hand deathadder 3.5G to mod my wingman gaming mouse. There's a chance that I won't be able to mount the sensor so that it's at the same height off the mousepad as it would be in its original casing.

So I have two questions.

1: Suppose the lift off distance (LOD) is 1/4 inch. If the sensor is at 1/8 inch off surface, will it track perfectly? Or does the tracking quality vary as a function of how far the sensor is off the pad (obviously when it exceeds LOD it'll be non-existent, but I'm wondering whether it degrades gradually, or whether it functions perfectly until LOD threshold is reached). I've never really used an optical or laser mouse so have no experience to work with here.

2: Will I be able to change the LOD in the driver settings for this mouse? I'd like to be able to tune it such that it stops tracking as soon as the mouse lifts off. Having quaked with a ballmouse for 16 years, I'm not used to having any sort of LOD.

deathadder sensor inside wingman (19 comments)
Posted by julios @ 00:14 CDT, 25 September 2012 - iMsg
After a year of deliberation and testing, I've decided to implant an optical sensor into my wingman (I have about five spare wingmen so am not afraid to experiment).

I found this guide:

http://tinyurl.com/9f75yma

(it's translated from the original swedish), and I have a couple friends who may be able to help out.

My main question right now is whether I should worry about using the newer vs. the older deathadder. Does the deathadder 3.5 have any prediction or negative accel issues that I should be concerned about? I hear that the original DA was truly flawless. Should I go out of my way to get my hands on it?

I've heard that the reason DA is good to use is because it has a separate circuitry board for the buttons, and this allows one to easily solder the deathadder main circuit board (minus the buttonboard) onto the wingman's button board. At least this is my understanding - it's discussed briefly here:

For what it's worth, yes I have tried other mice, including the logi G9x and the logi G600. Nothing comes close to the maneuverability I have with the wingman. Here is a video of how I hold and move my wingman:

Anyway, I would really appreciate any guidance here :)

Mice shaped like wingman gaming mouse? (9 comments)

Looking to upgrade from my wingman gaming mouse to a more sustainable solution (my current mouse won't last forever, and it's the last one I own).

For me, the great thing about the wingman is that it is nice and wide, and has three fat buttons. This allows me to grip the mouse with my thumb and pinky on the edges, and the index, middle, and ring fingers on each of the buttons. The only parts of my hand touching the mouse are my finger tips.

This is one option I see:

The Fatal1ty 1010 also looks like it might be appropriate, but not sure if there are any issues with this model I should be aware of.

I'd prefer a mouse without a scroll wheel, as I like a clean middle button (i use it for crouch), and in my limited experience with middle button scroll wheels, it's hard to click the middle button if there's a wheel in the way.

Any suggestions?
