Over at ClubFnatic an overview of the maps that will be used in the CPL Winter Quake 4 1on1 tournament has been made. It has a look at all the maps used in the tournament (galang, pro_bliptourney1, phrantic and tmp lost fleet).
"Since the maps all look, feel, and play so different, my guess is that the players best able to adapt, not only to the maps, but also to their opponents and the game itself, will come out on top. I for one am extremely anxious to see what exciting matchups the first big Q4 LAN tournament will present us."
I don't know tbh, but from running round the map you can see more than this and get a better idea of it. I would expect some kind of technical overview of some of the more difficult moves on blip for example and maybe a short tactical overview. Would be 100% more interesting.
why no tmp edge? great map w/ a great gaming history... (for those who don't know, there were many great q2 matches played on original edge *cought dennis "thresh" fong, mr. death row himself, not to mention the rest of the DR crew and friends.... b2, maka, unholy / rix immortal kuin.... if u haven't seen some of the games played by any of these names in big q2 matches, i suggest u install a copy of q2 and go download some...)
i guess there's something to be said about the nature of the gaming community evolving; maps seem to get smaller, almost like a pacman arena that starts to box in as the timer runs out... by forcing players into smaller, more confined spaces, you intensify the action which demands a completely different pace of gameplay. (oh shit, so it also makes for better spectating as well).
call me oldschool, but im a firm believer of a certain lvl of "finesse" (and i use the word loosely) between a player and the level he runs... as opposed to some of the newer maps being cranked out (especially the ishlist id compiled with the vanilla version of q4; but that's an entirely differnet post), where the finesse is the very chaotic action that the map precipitates.
Because the majority is sick & tired of q2dm1 or the Q4 equivalent, same goes for q3dm6. Honestly if the game doesn't offer any revolution or evolution on it's previous installment, but only copies it, we could at least play different maps.
I already hate id/Raven for officially making/remaking "The Edge", as it's prolly gonna be the most played TDM map all over again. Yes it's nice, but I've had enough of it in the Q2 days.
I agree. While normally I'm against playing on remakes of levels, I just don't know how you can ignore The Edge. It is such a great map and it would be awesome seeing players from Q2 like Purri compete with Q3 players on it.
It was a nice overview of the maps, but I would've liked them to go into more strategical detail, going into good armor-run "paths" and other various in-depth details.
what is it that makes tmp edge a bad map? the #1 bitch is the mega/YA in the close proximity, but i think the tmp did a wicked job adding the 2nd YA across the map (oh, because fleet doesn't have a YA and mega merely seconds from one-another either). The second armor combined with the large total area of the map makes for smooth respawns and extremely strategically played games.
fact of the matter is that the boxes within the YA/mega room in edge create some extremely intriguing angles for rocket/rail, offence/defence battles.
if you've played in a cash-purse, tournament environment, you know that a timed 1on1 match is like a game of chess; the player who makes the least amount of mistakes wins. having distances and varying altitudes within the map, edge truly forces a player to be on top of his game to win against an equally skilled player, and when this top-tier game is reciprocated by one's opponent, you get some hella exciting games with crazy shots and sick movements.
Yeah they moved the Yellow Armor all the way over to the other side(not really), except for the fact that it takes the same amount of time to get to it from where it was on the stock verion of the map.
I'm pretty sure that CPL Winter isn't won by map control or by amassing these "frag" things. The only way to truly defeat your opponent on this stage is to score more WAM BAM SHAZAMs than him.
i think its going to depend on who can adapt to q4max when its released the fastest:) the longer they take to release it with the faster and faster winter cpl comes its tough to know whats going to be included in it since the spawns and the shotgun switching have been changed.
From a spectators POV bilptourney and phrantic are awful to watch. The cooller demo on phrantic is fine because he plays it so well. I havent seen a blip demo that I didnt hate. Galang is fun, same with lost fleet and the edge. I'm maybe one of the few that will miss q2dm1.
Phrantic is pretty repetitive and the combat always feels the same. It just doesn't offer any flexibility in the way that it's played. Pro-blip is better although I don't like the lack of vertical battles or the sheer number of slopes everywhere. What is it that you hate about pro-blip demos?
