For anyone having trouble..

"Technical: IMPORTANT: Make sure you turn off post processing in fddshow playback settings, right click on the icon in your system tray while playing back a movie to check if it is on. Some have seen that this setting totally ruins a movie so its best left off.

There is a new (relativity) video codec used for this movie, called x264. The playback filter fddshow, media splitter, and movie player are included with the movie. But all you should need to view the movie is, -successfully- installing the playback filter(reboot, then install if you have errors, do NOT skip/ignore files), installing the media splitter and then use your favorite movie player.
FFDShow installation: When you get to section entitled "Video Decoders", be sure you check the box for "H.264, X264".
Haali media/matroskasplitter installation: When at the "Options" section, be sure to check "Enable MP4 support".


If that doesn’t work, download the other versions of the movie that will be released. Also new codecs have higher decoding requirements so you need a better CPU for playback, but unless your PC is 4 years old you should have no problems. Turning off all other programs running on your PC should also help. Connect to IRC server quakenet or enterthegame at #shaolinproductions if you have any problems."

When you install fddshow you won't have to click anything in the installation menu, but for MatroskaSplitter MAKE SURE you click mp4 support, for me it wouldn't even play until I did this. If you notice you are having audio lag, right clicking fddshow in your system tray and turning off post proccessing should fix it up nicely, which was the case with me.

Does the vid run on hardware DivX players? Useless download, if not.

hardware h264(AVC) players will be out in the future
xvid/divx in avi is just a giant hack and so are hardware players ;)
also why would one want to put out high quality video on a sucky low-res display like a TV screen? (i think i can safely assume that you don't own a hdtv display :P and even then putting it via the digital out of the gfx card of your pc would give you a better result than a hardware player)

I have both options and can safely say that the DVD-R from Samsung (with built in divx/xvid handling does a FAR better job than my 7800gtx does of sending the divx to the HDTV I have.

The certified DivX players are , well, certified for a reason...

PC's is better for wathing DVD's and various movie formats on normal TV's, HDTV's and projectors than a standalone DVD player is (unless it's a very very good DVD player), so there might be how you connected your PC to the TV then.

you can also install CCCP (http://zhentarim.net/zx-pp.php) comes with exactly those features you mentioned + 2 proper video players and without any redundant codecs or filters that fuck up your system :)

This is one of the worst movies ever, really, wtf...

Editing is awesome, the codec is also almost lossless, x264 owns, but the frags and the angles picked for the scenes are the worst possible.

I won't even comment further on the soundtrack because I think it never pleases everyone, but I didn't like that either.

so a 4x rocket and other unique frags didnt please you... no problem, i'll pass on the information to the editors so that they can fake a 10x next time by playing with handicap.

They would please if I had any time do actually watch them. Each frag is displayed for a split second, the angles picked for the recording are just horrible.

The frags are excellent, but the recamming is poor, done as if for a tricking movie. Half of the airrox shots do that stupid rotation focus around the rocket whilst its traveling to its target. This takes much away from the frag because we don't see the distance the rocket traveled in first person perspective before it hit the target. You HAVE to see it from first person to understand why its OMFG - the editors deprived us of this :(

I actually totally agree with you saboya. They treat the angles for rockets and third-person shot as they would a defrag (and did in Tricking IT2) video, and it really fucks this movie up.
I don't consider an OMFG frag a rocket shot from the rail platform accross the entire map to the top shotgun platform on q3dm17 whilst hitting some stupid player in the air who went on the launch pad at the wrong time.
Some of the frags were squandered with the angles / slowdowns. For example, Recon's amazing flick shot was played once in full speed then once with a slowdown of which we don't know the intensity of. It really takes away from the frag. cky did a better job in made for quake with unKind's flick shot hitting a guy in the yellow armor room right after teleporting onto the corridor leading to the red armor.
Too many recams... keep it old school plz.

This is a great send off for Quake 3.. all kinds of insane, lucky, and hilarious frags.. and some great frag runs too. My personal favorite is the 3rd to the last, but I may be somewhat biased :P

Not all of the frags are technically the most amazing, but the focus is solid and the dull moments few and far in between some really breathtaking stuff. Music was synced brilliantly and for the most part wasn't dull or cliche movie music.

This movie has such a crisp, clean editing feel to it that you can forgive some gratuitous slowdowns for dm17 luck rockets. I honestly felt excited about Q3 just watching this movie, and I can't wait to see what Q4 has in store. I can't wait to see Q4 in stores. I can't wait for Q4.

My review score: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WILL WATCH AGAIN!!!!!!!

x264 in mp4 is actually the next step after xvid/divx in avi (or all the other vfw hacks)
the performance problems arise because the x264 codecs are more or less still alpha stage and not tweaked for performance (they still beat any vfw hack regarding compression and picture quality :D - you can easily make a 115mb x264 video file and it will still look better than a 176mb xvid video file - and by putting it into mp4 container you will gain another 8mb roughly [x264 in avi would be a very very dirty hack and it would break advanced features of x264 such as variable frame rate])

on the long run it will be supported out of the box by windows (similar to what happened with mp3 - windows versions prior to 98se didnt play them by default and you had to install a codec :D)

if it lags on 2.4ghz you probably have a lot of redundant hardware hogging tasks running in the background as well

With all the post processing in the world disabled, my 2200+ drops a fucking lot of frames (like 8%). Even with vlc it drops noticeably.

hmmm a 2200+ ? that's the 1.5ghz sempron or the 1.8ghz athlon xp? how much ram at which speed? slow harddrive? on some machines the audio output might eat away a lot of the performance too

XP of course -> fsb 266 mhz (ram is rated higher, so it's not like it's hating me over an overclock which isn't happening). That's with 512 ram, nforce 2 with soundstorm audio.
Also, my hd is a recent seagate 160 gb (7200 rpm, 8mb cache, parallel ATA) and it's defragged.
Background processes are clean and calm, using W2K.

it should be able to pull it off imho...
but then again the quality of the video is very high (and they used a high resolution in comparison to what is usually being used for video - the first one with a higher res than 640*480 or 704*400)
if it were in 640*480 you'd probably be able to play it without dropping frames... the resources usage is roughly equivalent to the res... an 800x600 video takes about 150% of the resources a 640*480 one takes :> (actually it's the same with high quality high res xvid videos- for example: http://raspberryheaven.net/~adtrw/torrents/Kamichu1.torrent <- really high quality, hdtv resoution ... in case you want to test it out)

I did some investigating. On low/medium spec machines the render mode is important ! Overlay modes should be faster compared to VMR9.
Unfortunately, Media Player Classic doesn't seem to count frames/dropped frames when using overlay mode, so I can't put a number on the improvement, but it is clearly noticeable.
Especially, I can *finally* watch sqf in action pretty much at its full 50 fps.

(that's even with fullscreen 1152*864)

#29 Read the help on own-age.com, it's probably because Post-processing was ticked when you installed ffdshow, or because mp4 support wasn't enabled when you installed matroska-splitter. Sorry for the inconvenience but a huge amount of filesize is saved by using the new codec.

whats so shitty about this codec? it's gonna replace xvid pretty soon. the quality/filesize ratio is way better than anything xvid could achieve. however since it's still early version of the codec, a few problems are bound to happen.

in the anime dvd ripping scene x264 is being used more and more, they are using mkv as container for a while already and multiple audio and (soft) subtitle streams as well - it's all just so much better than hardsubbed xvid in avi >_<" sadly only few of them keep the surround sound - but with the size of the video decreasing there should be some more soon who keep the "earcandy" audio :D~ [not that i mind big filesizes anyway]

Anyway, this movie surely contains the most entertaining mix of the most ownage Q3 frags I ever saw. Finally these guys understood that they shouldnt use fucking gay metal music, but "MOVIEMUSIC" and that's why they probably joined SP. The first frag movie in shaolin style in a game I actually enjoy to watch! Everything is brilliant imo, BUT...
A little [-] for the 2nd part, because thats a little less quality.
And also the outro, well I liked the concept, but the quality was too low, so that it could fit in with the fucking high quality in the rest of the movie.

tried winamp, only played the sound
tried windows media player, fucked up the cpu(100%), froze had to end task it
tried vlc, started ok, had a few stops but nothing big, then like 6 mins in the image jus froze.

maybe it is the codec of the future, but it isnt the future yet, it isnt good enough to be used so stop using it as the codec until it is; or atleast have an xvid version ready at the same time of release aswell; ill d/l the xvid version if i can actually find news on it by that time.

using this codec the way it is atm is ridiculous...im on an athlon 3000+ and cant even play it; youre just descriminating againt people who dont upgrade their pc every 6 months :P

x264 encoded video even plays on an xbox (733mhz)

a 3000+ should play it without any problems, the playback problems are probably caused by faulty setup on your end :)

or because the codec is shit. if it was xvid id have no problem at all
i also watched Anathema - Trailer off own-age.com which uses the dodgy codec too, but that played, so its either this movie has been rendered/compressed dodgily or it cant handle the size of the file
either way they should have released an xvid version at the same time as the other :/

my 2500+ slave box should be playing it as well... but there's no monitor/sound connected to it atm so i can't try o.O

there are special tools for x264 encoding available though... but those are like in alpha stage of development and therefore not optimized (actually there's one included in nero, but that one is obviously not for free :P)
it's not as easy as doing xvid encodes in the current state

as for the speed of encoding: a little slower than xvid atm (but with xvid most experienced encoders will apply quite a number of filters during the encode so you'll end up at about the same time used)

nah its not easier. you have to use the cmd line and it takes 10 times as long as an xvid encode for a lot of us.

as the resolution is quite high it was probably a pain in the ass :D

edit : just asked and fei said it prolly took him about 4 hours per pass (3 pass encode) he's on a dual athlon 4400+ with 3gigs of RAM.

that sounds quite reasonable :) a 4400+ with 3gb ram is a monster though :D
it would probably take like 10+ hrs on an average machine then (but then again: some people encode half a day and more on 23minute long anime episodes with xvid)

Ok, this might have been because im really tired atm. But after i dled the hq version (someone told me to get that one instead of xvid), the instructions were lacking. On irc i was told i was a moron for not following them. So i did them again, the sound was still laggy. Also the music was although different from other fragmovies, it didnt make me excited in a way that I think it should.
This got so annoying i stopped watching after like half the movie :/

if you're willing to spend sometime and give the hq version a shot, uninstall the codecs and reinstall them following the instructions. when it works, x264 is great. however since its an early version of the codec, a few people may experience some problems. the xvid version should work fine though.

I might try the xvid version someday yeah :)

The Frags where ok but only a few are really good (only my opinion).

I´m missing the quake feeling in this movie...
Justquake for example has this fast and pure frag feeling.

Editing was really nice but sadly none of it made me 'wow'.

The best bit was the frag on dm17 where the blue doom was falling over the edge, it was slowmo and it zoomed into his face where you could see the rocket coming in the reflection of his visor, and he conveniently looks up to see it coming too, kinda lucky but added to the effect :> twas around 13 mins i believe.

Pretty good but I got bored after the second double air rocket/double rail.

I thought this was supposed to be a frag movie not an effects movie? It seemed like every other frag was in slow mo and had some effect added on. You always knew what was going to happen so in the end I lost patience and ended it at the credits. A good movie none the less but I feel other movies like Annihilation do a much better job it getting straight to the point and showing the important contents of the movie; i.e. the frags, exactly how they were performed in first person view.

yer, you could always see what was going on with that movie. going to watch it again now as i forgot about it. hehe

top notch editing and quality but some of the frags were incredibly hard to make out. Some of the recams would have bveen more suited to a tricking movie. imo, you should have kept more first person povs footage as some of the recamms were very poor indded :/ Don't get me wrong, this is a very high quality movie, it could have been perfect if the pov's were considored a bit more.

However, i thought the the movie looked great and the soundtrack did rock!

sadly i have to agree with the people above above who disliked the recamming. i'm not saying the movie was horrible though, the syncing was very good and editing was just excellent. i just had to go wow at times.

unfortunately there are too many contradicting shots in the movie hence the movie language just came out incoherently. some of the shots look as though they were just there for the sake of syncing with the music while some of the more elaborate frags (ie. the ones that you have a short story to tell) had bad transitioning so it was hard to actually tell what was going on. i think most of the issues fall on the latter.

anyway this was still very good and ranks among my only other favourite which was annihilation. i think so far it's the only movie done back then with a very coherent flow. tricking it was pretty good as well.

i think get quaked 3 will always remain the greatest gaming movie ever made for me. i may be biased since it was the first quake movie i ever saw (i was a wow addict beforehand) but it still beats all other gaming movies in every way. the only one that comes a close second for me was dorftrottel but, as incredible as it is, the music wasn't quite consistently good enough (the last song was amazing though).

i remember from 2006 to 2009 i used to watch gq3 literally once every day or so. pretty weird how a gaming movie can make a mark on someone like that lol.

Maaan, the movie was damn well edited considering how old it was. Dorftrottel is great too, although I'm not really into promode fragging but KOS is such an amazing movie maker (f33l, w3sp strafes, etc). 2 of my fave defrag movies. I will always consider AnnihilatioN and GQ3 the best q3 movies though.

I can see why you would watch it every day, it gets you hyped up to hell and watching it now especially makes you remember all the good memories you had on q3.
