This is all based on my assumption this 'use item - no item there' sound can be heard by other players.

I was thinking it might abuse a small sound buffer for simultaneous ingame sounds or smth like that. Maybe even the fact that many players tweak sound commands, of which one or the other might reduce such a sound buffer.
So when repeating a sound like that, the sound comming after cannot be heard....!?

no, it's a way (cos we lack the chat token) to alert a teammate in tdm that you dropped an item/an item spawned near you. that's the origin for the binds, the spam came later but it has no meaning :)

Other useless quake observations:

You can bind the '>' key with "bind 0x00", but you can't bind +movedown on it and duck, it works like the mousewheel in that regard, instant release. So some keys and wheel cannot be bound with + commands? Why? Also which other keys are like that?

Well it's kind of stupid to do that in pro duels with money on the line, against players of which at least half can interpret every small sound clue like sherlock holmes himself.

I've wondered about that myself. It's a tick, back from the days with gibs. It would just look good and make your testicles feel bigger since you turned your opponent into a spraying buch of bloody body parts.

not sure about other players, i do that when i simply follow through with my next move (in that case: the next shot i would have made) planned irregardless of the enemy being dead already. it's about self-assurance and with gibs it looked good too :p

You have to gib the bodies in ET/RtCW because otherwise their medics can revive them (obviously hugely more important than any possible information you can deny them).
When you get gibbed you indeed can't see what's going on in that location anymore and have to watch your teammates who are still alive. If all teammates are dead the camera sticks at the place the last guy died though.

It's just a tick. Cypher does 360s which I think he does to reset his mouse position/grip without needing to move his arm too much. But then again he does it so much to the point where I think it's mostly just a tick for him as well.

Speaking on the topic of 360s which have become increasingly more common amongst players (I don't think Cypher was the first but probably the most recognizable that I know of who does it constantly). I think the 360s are probably a little silly looking to non-quake playing players or new players. Watching a duel where the players are twirling around in circles seems to me a bit silly.

But ticks are that way. In CS weapon switching between knife and weapon pointlessly in pretty universal. In Halo (on the xbox) the players will do fast circles with their reticles (some say to keep thumb moving/blood circulating) but it is also a tick.

I do the 360s because its much easier on my wrist (since i use accel) and i can actually get through corners faster and dodge easier in fights.

still, the 360s work wonders for reseting your mouse feel when on the run. In a fight tho, most people prefer just shaking the mouse :)

360s serve the main purpose of having a quick look around, if the enemy hides nearby he will be seen as a flash of fullbright color. Also mouse reset to middle of pad, and in some situations the movement is more fluent when truning a 3/4 circle to one side instead of 1/4 to the other.

i think it has to do with mostly everyone playing right-handed, i tend to flick to the right and spin to the left. bad habit probably because some day some enemy will figure that out :D

BTW, I do 360s not for resetting mouse feel, but when the mouse/sensitivity feels slow for me.. forcing yourself to do quick sudden movements somehow makes the mouse feel faster for some reason.
