You need to keep soul in your obelisk for 2 minutes cumulatively; initially soul spawns at special place some time after match start, you need to pick it up and bump into any of two obelisks, this obelisk becomes your team's base after that for the rest of the match and the remaining obelisk goes to opponent team; you can extract soul from opponent's obelisk if you stand in red circle around it for few seconds; while having soul your activate ability button changes to throw soul so you cannot activate ability while running with soul.

TL;DR: It's the dumbest mode ever, no point of watching it or playing without prize money.

The structure of obelisk is nothing similar to a MOBA, Quake Champions in general has very little in common with MOBAS, abilities and passive skills have been in games forever, just because you slap them on a FPS doesn't change anything.

MOBA = Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, which is just about any games by that definition. Players are randomly spitting this around without even knowing what it means, pretty dumb if you ask me.

Some ESL fighting game casters, brothers called Mustard and Ketchup. Learning Quake as they go it seems. Prepared a lot, but can't cram in years of playing Quake like you can random facts about the game. Also run at a constant speed of 100 words per minute like proper Fighting Game casters. Shouldn't be on the main stage (I support them developing, of course, just elsewhere) imo, but I'm surprised to find myself in the minority here.

They're excellent casters, as soon as the analytics come they'll likely be the best casters Quake has ever had imo, Inc guys like Joe and 2GD. they need to watch some ddk analysis though

CTF is also a heavily team based mode, but you can get very clear roles to play almost without teamspeak , and still can work as casual play. So CTF would be better choice.

The reason to why OW have made it as big, is because there are clear roles to play, and how to play it. Push a cart is dead simple to understand, everyone knows where to go .

You always have VOD's to watch. Nobody from Europe would stay up that late on a Sunday to watch the US games either. It works both ways mate.

There are lots of way in which that can be fixed, spacing them out, diving in different days, etc. I know there are vods but its never the same as realtime hype, also no possibility to chat.

Unless US players were made to play in mornings / early afternoons and EU players made to play only in evenings, there would be no other way to make that work.

Besides those are only the qualifiers, you'll get to see the LAN finals live regardless of time zone.

Some people need to drop the CTF argument now. I used to say the same but you need to move on, they might bring in CTF at some point but they will not change their esports mode at its core. It's gonna be sacrifice. And if you actually play it with equally skilled teams, it's actually fun.

What we 'need' isnt to drop sacrifice for a new mode, CTF or other. What we need, and bethesda are aware of it, is an improved spectator experience. And we know they're working on it as a top priority (besides netcode & overal optimization).

There are a few things that are clearly coming in : overhead cams, improved HUD, Better friend-foe visibility, better name/team visibility, obelisk cameras that can see the action around it.... and so much more I prolly can't even think of atm. Not to mention I expect them to get some sort of minimap in at some point. I think I've seen 'heatmap stats' and so forth.

What I'm trying to say is, the mode right now is hard to watch. But it's gonna get better. Any teammode in Quake has been hard to watch. It's not the mode, it's the spec features and they're working on it. So grab a gun and go play some sacrifice, cuz it's definetly funnier to play than watch right now. But have some faith in how hard they're working for a better spectator experience.

While I'd love CTF (duh, I'd prolly do better in CTF than sacrifice ?) I just changed my opinion based on playing the game. It feels fun to play high skilled games right now for me. I'm having a blast.

I don't personally find the mode so objectionable myself, but given how many ppl dislike the mode, I don't see why we couldn't ask for it to be changed after QuakeCon, if people don't come around to it. What's the issue? The devs are too stuck on their ideas? Even as people are complaining, not watching it and playing other modes instead? If that's the case, they should get off their high horse and look around them. If they change people's opinions on it come QuakeCon, that's fine as well.

It seems to me it might even have some advantages in spectating to other modes, with only one soul / obelisk active at a time compared to CTF, and having runs to focus on as opposed to the flowing unintelligible thing that is TDM. But I'm not willing to impose my opinion on everyone.

Sacrifice is a pile of shit and the most boring mode I ever played in any Quake game. I would rather have Clanarena or Domination as the main esport mode and those two were already the garbage of every quake game. Nobody except of the teams that qualify for qcon will play it. Just try to find a game with matchmaking. Can wait for 1h any time of the day and not find a match. 8 people rush point X + repeat and talk nonstop on voicecoms cuz without it is unplayable. That is all this mode has to offer. No clue how someone is supposed to enjoy doing the same thing nonstop over and over again and every map plays exactly the same. It is like enjoying beeing a Assembly-line worker that does the same work sequence over and over again to infinity.

The feeling of clusterfuck you get is mostly because of the spec features wether you're able to spot it or not. followkiller cam and followsoul/pu cam are the only things in atm, not to mention the cam stays on the dead pov for too long.

It's true that the spec features are lacking, but there's enough to tell that the mode is not as good as CTF was in quake 3/live. They have clearly combined 1 Flag CTF with Domination and hoped that with the added abilities of the new champions and maps that are clearly to small the result will just be amazingly exciting.

The result is crap and better spec features will only demonstrate that more. I'm sure some people find it fun to play, but that's quake - put a dozen players in a big box with weapons and it'll be fun to some extent...

In my opinion CTF was the best team mode around, but it was getting very stale. New maps in a new game with champions and their different abilities etc would have been enough to breathe some real excitement back into the mode. By trying also to create a new game mode they've overshot the sweet spot quite drastically.

Just my opinion tho... It might turn out to be the best thing ever, but I doubt it :)

How about a split screen /4 with all 4 players from a team so you can see what all 4 players from the same team are doing, and then the casters can switch to the other team.

At least you would see how they work as a team and have an understanding of what's going on.

The game is still in beta, not even on steam and hasn't had proper marketting yet (tv ads and what not). Next year, the game will probably not even be more than 6 months old after official release - maybe even less (remember long beta). Truly don't understand how you can expect something like that when you objectively analyze what's what.

You don't have any clue (as any of us) of actually how many people already 'tried' the game - and getting the game takes effort : register on bethesda.net, get a key in your mail... And the QC twitch channel is literally a 2 weeks old account that started with 0 follower.

If you're trying to compare QC beta to OW beta you're dead wrong : first off it's a blizzard game, it'd have success even if it was a piece of shit game, second the so called 'beta' was a marketting thing itself, because the game was actually ready and playable and almost bug-free already. Lastly, their promotion events for the game happened on their official blizzard twitch channel, which already had 200k followers compared to QC's 0.

Even if Sacrifice really wasn't gonna make it esports wise, duel is and would be doing pretty good to carry the game beyond july of next year...

Man, I hate the term "meta", annoying word we inherited from MOBA lingo. There isn't really anything people do during the course of a match that is metagame. It's just strategy and tactics.

Huh? Meta is just a gaming term for strategy, MOBAs didn't invent it, I've been using the term meta forever and have pretty much 0 knowledge of MOBAs.

It's relatively new, and its now widespread usage is annoying because strategy and metagame are not the same thing.

Whether this erroneous usage originated in the MOBA community (that's the context in which I see it applied the most) or not, you wouldn't have to be involved in that community to be exposed to it.

I don't remember seeing it more than a few years ago and certainly not in the context of Quake. I see that its usage has increased hugely in that time. I find no results for "meta" on this site pre-2010. LoL was released late 2009. I can only get meaningful google trends results when I combine "meta" with "dota" or "league", and those results show increasing usage over time.

In any case, they do not use it to mean what it actually means, and using two words that have different but related meanings to mean the same thing is a dilution of language and serves zero practical purpose. "Some cool guys in my favourite game are saying it" is not a good reason to jump on the bandwagon IMO.

Meta is a general word or added word used even outside of gaming. Like metaethics in philosophy. It also makes sense in gaming in the same sense, either in Quake or mobas or elsewhere. Just because it seems, or even if it is the case that it was first or more actively adopted in mobas, we shouldn't shy away from it. It has a real meaning and a purpose.

I know that the prefix meta is used to form other words. The same has been done with "metagame", and even if one can try to create one's own meaning derived from the prefix (which is not what these people are doing anyway), it doesn't change the fact that the word has an established meaning that has been around for a long time. It does NOT mean strategy or tactics, and that is how people seem to be using it quite often now.

To be clear, I don't have a problem with people using the word. My problem is when they use it as a synonym for strategy.

Metagame literally means "beyond the game", so its meaning naturally depends on how you define the boundaries of the game. Everything outside those boundaries that nonetheless affects how the game is played and the outcomes of games is the metagame.

I have no clue why anyone would consider strategy employed in the course of a match outside those boundaries.

Studying your opponent's play style, knowing how he plays, and using that knowledge to make decisions when you play him is an example of metagame. So is any psychological warfare. Many people consider as metagame using knowledge of what strategies players in general have a tendency to employ, which is fine but could just as well be considered within the boundaries of the game.

From there, we have people using metagame to mean "the collection of strategies currently in vogue", and the next step is to use it as a synonym for strategy in general, which is the abomination. :D

MOBA people only talk about this a lot because of the high frequency at which those games get rebalanced (something not as relevant to games that are allowed to solidify and mature), which causes the "in-vogue strategy" to change, and they call this a "meta change", often as if meta means "balance patch", which at least is not as bad as just calling any strategy meta.

At the end of the day, I don't see any benefit to using this word unless you're referring to game-external things.

I use the word to mean the stuff in the game that is strong (champions, heroes, weapons etc) and therefor will be used, and what kind of strategies are popular, what kind of tactics are used, all stuff like that. I do not use it to mean a literal strategy. Now rereading the conversation, it seems shahe used it in a way that is easily interpreted to be using the word correctly, but later said that it's just a word for strategy. The latter is errenous, I agree.

Nothing really to do with MOBAs though, I'd say - his use rather than explanation of the term seems fine, and it's also used correctly most of the time in MOBAs too. I'd say it's mistaken less than people confuse strategy and tactics ;p Also not a reason to stop using the word.

Regarding your clarification, I said that use was "fine", but it does depend on the boundaries like I said. Though I'd be inclined to consider use of knowledge of the strategies more metagame than just the strategies themselves. If one just wanted to talk about current strategies or their development over time, I dunno why one would feel the need to use a more obscure term.

Making the "in-vogue strategies" (somehow considered outside the game) different from the "strategies of the game" (considered inside the game) is a lot more applicable when that is being kept spicy by constant balance updates and addition of new heroes. In games where this isn't changing all the time or where you cannot predict your opponent well using this information and have to observe what he is doing and adapt, I don't see the point of the distinction.

Knowledge of how a particular player plays is not something you necessarily get just by playing the game. It is external information you are using during the course of the match.

No, that is a proper beta, beta means all assets ready and no game breaking bugs.

The marketing "thing" was QC beta, it was an alpha.

You can call it however you want, a game in beta isn't supposed to be ready. OW clearly was minus a few champions balances.

Furthermore, there was no NDA during the OW closed beta and all the famous streamers got a key in the first wave. It was clearly a marketting ploy the way they scheduled their betas. While admiteddly bethesda might've done the same thing to an extent, it was evidently a two-birds-one-stone thing because the game isn't nearly as polished and ready as OW was when they started their beta.

Just having it with the negativity diehard esr users have all the time. It's a better product already than out-of-the-box q4, q3 or even ql and it's still in beta. It doesn't have as much viewers as we'd like ? Welp you can be sad about it and/or try to promote the game yourself in every way you can, but when I see people here wishing it dead already is beyond me...

Gameplay balances and minimal stuff is exactly what a beta is supposed to be for, so OW was a proper beta.

I was super positive with the game, till they lifted NDA and anybody could play way before the game was a proper beta. We hardcores will keep playing, but the potential casual playerbase took a huge hit.

About q3 example, there was minimal competition at that time. Q4 well, not a good example, multiplayer wasnt ok on release and game died soon.

I'd really like a practice mode with bots similar to QL, playing around with combat kills is really inefficient when you have to wait a few minutes for an FFA game

looking at the tourny info, am I correct in saying that the players won't know if they've qualified for the LAN aspect until the 5th of August after the regional finals?

this gives just 19 days for people to arrange flights, accommodation and visas?

I hope we don't lose too many LAN qualified players and teams to the UK and US visa systems.

For visas I don't know, but the flight & accommodation is supposed to be covered for everybody qualified to quakecon, I think.

Top teams will get all-expenses-paid travel to their respective Regional Final. Teams that move on from the Regionals will join the top duelers with paid travel and accomodations for the finals at QuakeCon 2017.

Man those were some good duels this weekend.

Favorite game was tox vs xron. What a beast of a performance by xron.

Sacrifice was actually fun to watch as well, good they fixed some of the spec issues.

Interesting that you find them the most enjoyable.

I personally think that tox/xron were the most boring games... Waiting for 15 mins to get a frag is exhausting af from my point of view. I was close to quitting the stream as literally Nothing happened in those games. Luckilly the other Matches were not that +back.

Agent vs WichtL was definitely the best !

Also a great game yea. With regards to the Xron game. He really just played well, it was slow at times, but just his rockets and weapon selection alone was stellar. Then reads on tox and when to take fights also great. Really gg.

i haven't been very active on here in the last few years so I don't really keep up with things.

I think to make sacrifice more enjoyable to the eyes of the spectators they should have some sort of split screen /4 with all 4 players from a team so you can see what all 4 players from the same team are doing, and then the casters can switch to the other team when they want.

At least you would see how they work as a team and have an understanding of what's going on.

I think the obelisk rooms should get team coloured elements on walls similar way they have it on ctf maps, that way it would be way easier to follow if players are defending their own or trying to steal the soul from enemy obelisk

if followed player isnt looking directly at the obelisk there is no way to tell, and memorizing which one is A or B on each map feels pretty stupid ano not spectator friendly

Well, main reason beeing that twitch is now an established busines model for advertising . Companys that sponsor these tournaments wants something in return for theyr money, if you tell them that there will be lower amount of twitch viewers because most will use GTV , then .. well , not an easy selling point.

Yes GTV can also have commercials etc . But , theory is useally not a good starting point when getting sponsors.

Streaming with casters and commercials is the standard.

I wouldn't expect GTV to take over from twitch since it doesn't provide video and maybe not even a caster audio stream synced with the game. Changing your POV independently of that stream doesn't work too well either. It's a tool for the more hardcore.

It is possible to put ads in the maps QL-style as well. I'd be surprised if they aren't thinking of something like that, GTV or not.

The work needed to implement generalized GTV kinda overlaps a lot with creating the spectator functions a caster needs to stream it properly on twitch anyway---the only real difference being that anyone can connect to the server to be a spectator and use those functions, not just a select few.

How about a separate stream following each player individually, so 8 different streams with the same casting voice over on top of those 8 streams. It would divide the audience across 8 different Twitch URL's, but the total audience would be the same which shouldn't be a problem for their business model.

For example, when watching NOTTOOFAST against any other team I'm happy only speccing noctis or toxic for an entire game.

That would be too difficult and you don't want to dilute your following into multiple channels especially, especially during the early stages of a games life.

I personally would much rather spec my favourite player the entire game and I'm more likely to watch the whole thing rather than this headache giving constant switching which makes it extremely confusing and would give an epilepsy to most normal people lol

It'd probably look like garbage at 720p with only two POVs displayed, let alone more. Visibility is already a problem.

I don't mean on the same screen, kind of like a slideshow of POV's you could scroll through on the same channel. I realise it's likely impossible because Twitch does not have such a feature integrated. But it's the only hypothetical I could think of that would possibly work.

Well, yeah, the existing system doesn't support it, so if you're gonna go down that path, why not build the whole thing in the game with GTV. Do some partnership with twitch for the video streaming part? I dunno.

What is GTV? I haven't heard of it before but it's been mentioned several times in this thread.

It's basically a means of spectating games within the game itself. So what you see is actually rendered on your PC; it's not a video. It doesn't require as much bandwidth, gives you full resolution, as many FPS as your PC is capable of, lets you control what you're looking at (like whose POV or multi-POV), and lets you control all viewing settings.

You don't get a stream with that, so no casters. But theoretically that could be added. So "the system doesn't support it", which is the same situation as in your idea with twitch.

I am about to head off on a trip with my friends I'm actual really interested how this Tournament plays out, All the games of seen have been Really good. Very unlikely but I hope to see new upcoming players in the finals

I still have barely touched this game but actually watched a lot of the games this qualifier. Duel was pretty damn entertaining and I'll definitely be watching for the rest of the qualifiers. It might even inspire me to buy a new computer so I can play with decent fps.

Sacrifice, however, is absolutely fucking awful to spectate. I haven't played it, but I really have no interest to.

And that's sad because watching the teams that have been put together would make my underwear uncomfortably wet if this were CTF or TDM or even fucking CA.
