If you have issues and are a paying customer file a case with QL support. Ask other players who have the same problem to send the same emails. Supports have a nasty tendency to skip on lone customer complaint but when they get a bunch of the same emails from paying customers they will have a problem ignoring it. The more of you the merrier.

Sync will prolly read it, but you need to talk to QL support as a paying member.

i get 10-20 ping higher than other games with servers in the same location. routing issues are the most frustrating thing ever because you know they can be fixed but shit isn't going to happen without an act of god.

You probably shouldn't use well-known ports.

That's gonna depend on whichever routes the packets are running through during the game. There's no guarantee they're gonna take the same path twice although it usually is fairly stable.

Honestly I don't know if it works or if it is placebo. I change the port when my rails are not connecting properly or I am having any other internet issues. It seems to help but again this may be placebo. However when my ping is a bit higher than it should be this fixes it. I am only talking a few 3 to 9 ping difference though. I usually get 32 ping to chi but sometimes i get 38 or 39 and this seems to bring it back down.

Placebo? The effect is absolutely noticeable when it changes something... your ping gets lower (or higher). If the ping doesn't change then yeah it would be placebo. Unless something else like packet loss changes.

It will only ever work if you hit some weird load balancing case where packets are routed differently based on source/destination port.

on average how often does this actually work? cuz i was just ingame spamming this for a good minute and nothing happened. I wonder why they don't just fix the servers? instead of me spamming a bind for 10 minutes before a game praying that this works

It's not some kind of weird magic. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. When there's load balancnig it's more likely to be something simple like a port%2 to separate the flow.

What do you mean by "fix the servers"? What are you suggesting should be fixed exactly? Because no server-side change can control routing, by the way. Just like clients can't do anything, apart maybe from changing a port like we recommend here. It's like trying to change the sea currents by changing things in the harbors...

How does the problem surface? changing server hosts to cheaper ones? then they should change them back. cuz there's nothing I can do on my end. either way hurts my level of play quite a bit when I play some noob with 20 ping and he's hitting all his nooby shots yet I'm missing the same things (and much more which I usually always hit with even as high as 70 ping)

You can ask QL's support about that but I don't think IL's server host changed since about 2 years ago after the previous IL servers were decommissioned by the previous host. Anyway feel free to look into the server hosting business, you'll find out there aren't options you can pay for to get "better routing" so it can't really be helped. It's mostly a case of compatibility between your and the server's ISP (or the backbones they use, etc.). Peering agreements are what matter the most. Routing nowadays isn't about reducing the packet's travel time, it's about reducing its travel cost. The cost/distanceTraveled being typically cheaper on a company's own network, it's often possible to save money while the total path's length increases.

So, well... you can't do much about it. Neither can anyone. The best you can do is to tunnel through a VPN to try to get a better routing.

works for me a lot - i'll join a CHI server, be at 50-60 ping, do the script (i just use bind ' "cvarAdd net_port 1; net_restart") a few times and end up with 20-30 ping consistently.

you don't happen to work at an IT company and have a VPN that you can activate, do you? i also can do that and greatly improve my ping because the network at my office is so much better / more reliable than routing from my home network.

the other night net_port 1 made my ping go up to 100 but net_port 3300 got it to 47. O_o and the default port = 70

Using widely known port ranges is silly, you open yourself up to throttling or at the very least packet shaping that you might not otherwise suffer from. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_TCP_and_UDP_port_numbers (as example, don't expect anyone to learn this, lol )

It's better to keep it in the range 27000-27999 which is the Q3/Qlive range, and often has options for prioritization for udp games in routers.

this is wwhy I suggest just making an alias such as

alias prt "cvarADD net_port 1;net_restart"

then you can just use /prt in the console to quickly change to one that will still be valid unless you've done it thousands of times.

Yeah il servers got considerably worse for me recently as well. I went from 30 ping to 55-70 for no apparent reason. Still playable but kind of annoying. Hopefully they fix that sometime soon.

i just started using WTFAST and ping went back down to 75

i ping decently to whole europe in any other game like: quake 3, et, warsow. then i switch to ql and bam 120 to germany.

QL actually uses 4 different data centres in .DE
If you can't get a better ping to any DE server and .DE is local for you then you really have issues.

If they really cared they would have fixed Texas servers. It's been like 4-5 years since Texas servers went from playable to super bad. Around 2009-2010 I was pinging like 80 to Texas servers and it was playable, some servers even felt smoother that 40 ping servers. I felt like lging was way easier with 80 ping than with lower ping.

But these days it's just impossible to play there, ping went up by 10ms but servers feel like 300 ping China servers. Shooting rockets or trying to lg is just pointless, because delay is just so big.

This reminds me of Q3 when all NA servers were from Texas and hosted by Escaped Turkey.
