Is it just me, or does it seem like most developers brush this feature under the rug when it comes to Arena FPS? Every title to date has had a sub-par story, little to no explanation of setting, and extremely one dimensional characters.

I believe that a solid game universe is important, and although it won't save a shitty game from being shit, it adds to the immersion, and gives the game depth and substance. With a few upcoming titles I'm not seeing developers try to address this. I know it's difficult with their budget, and so they decide to focus completely on gameplay. But is it so hard to hire a competent writer?

When I play quake, so many questions go through my head: Where am I? Who are these people I'm fighting? Why do I have to kill them? Who the fuck is that obese, metrosexual biker with his gut hanging out? The game has no context! And I know about the whole "The greatest fighters in the world must fight to the death in arena" shit, but that horse has been beaten to death.

What I'm saying is, the Lore (including the setting, timeline, story and characters) shouldn't be relegated to an afterthought. It would be cool if we could lose ourselves in the game world, connect with characters, and laugh at witty dialogue. Many gamers like this kind of thing.

TL;DR I'd appreciate it if Arena FPS' had better lore and universes. It makes it immersive, and can appealing to new players.
