-RPG -enemy's level is static, some are very strong in the beginning so be careful + many modifications, making the game much more rpg style oriented, this is the most important must have mod!!!!!!
-no map GPS mod + buy maps mod
-true bargaining -fixing the prices no more stupid sell 10 times cheaper/buy sh1t 50x more expensive -in standard Skyrim this sh1tty bargaining default is explicable to motivate you to play the game more, combined with the RPG mode which makes the game much harder to play this new system is absolutely recommended -although I had a hard time to make the two mods work together (RPG+realistic bargaining)

Baldurs Gate 1 & 2

Masterpiece, nothing else to say. Its Black Isle.
Awesome story, twists, npc interaction, romances... And of course, BG2 has the most charismatic villain of all times. Theres not a better choice if you like fantasy environment.
And since the fights arent turn based, you can say its more dynamic than F2.
Another Black Isle game you shouldnt miss is Planescape: Torment.

Other than that, Stonekeep or Startrail / Realm of Arkania series.

All of the games all pretty old, but theres nothing new that could match them in terms of gameplay.

This. There is no better. Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 (Throne of Bhaal expansion included) are the pinnacle of CRPG for me. So much win here.

Planescape: Torment is right alongside them. Amazing, haunting story and atmosphere set in an alien world paired with some of the best party characters. (VHAILOR!!!)

Puritan has listed my absolute top 3 CRPGs (and games in general) of all time.

If you enjoy the above then the Icewind Dale series would suit you. Not as well written arguably and a little iffy in some parts - still very enjoyable. I never got into the Neverwinter Nights games to be honest - but I believe NWN2 - Mask of the Betrayer is the one to play if you do.

Some older, perhaps more obscure RPG games I've enjoyed - Arcanum - Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura, Anachronox (awesome game - maybe a little long in the tooth considering it uses Q2 engine - fantastic story, gameplay and funny as hell characters - also...what an ending) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isdE2R-j0CI

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games! More so the KOTOR(1) than KOTOR2 - I found 2 to be a lot weaker and the ending a disappointment.

Jade Empire I enjoyed - it's a bit more of a lighter RPG - quite console'ified but with a good story and pretty unique setting it was special. To go with this I'd say Fable - The Lost Chapters.

I wouldn't recommend the Gothic series - they tend to be buggy as hell (especially 3 from what I experienced), but a lot of people would argue that. I enjoyed Gothic 2 - but if you want this kind of game - Skyrim/Fallout 3 is the way to go...although these are 1st person and not 3rd person. There are some alternatives to this - Two Worlds I/II and Risen (feels like Gothic) etc. My vote for 3rd person RPG goes to Dark Souls without question.

The Witcher games of course are fantastic. They play pretty differently from each other which ended in me enjoying The Witcher 2 more. You should try it.

If you're looking for more of a Hack 'n Slash RPG like Diablo then obviously Diablo 2/3 (enjoyed SP in 3), Torchlight 1/2, The incredible Adventures of Van Helsing and Sacred.
One game you NEED to play is Bastion. Fucking fun game with awesome narration, music and story - that ending!

Anyway, not an exhaustive list, but definitely games that stand out for me as I sit here.

It's horrible compared to part 1. You should really look into it if you just played 2.

I didn't play that one but heard nothing but bad things. I really liked Origins. Try it if it's on sale or something, you'll probably like it.

This. Chrono Trigger aged perfectly, as playable now as when it was released. Good story, fun dialogues, great characters, no random encounters.

the only down fall is the difficulty although i know it doesn't matter too much. still with all these rereleases coming out of old classic jrpgs they should throw in a hard mode... and then an insane mode for good measure.
