All in all: a beast of a movie... It really really makes me miss the good old IEM times. Imo this is THE movie that people who have never heared of quake need to see, and I will be surprised if they won't be amazed.

Really loved it. As with everything though it's not perfect.

Personally I love storylines in fragmovies so showing the player without much follow up to that game just made it seem like filler. Also I think it would be good to give context to some of these tournament shots to give a sense of what they're competing for.

Other than that I really enjoyed it, such an epic movie!

Amazing movie thought the story line was excellent. The overall aspect of the movie from first person to third person and back was wicked. The only thing I would have liked which was not a big deal was to see who was fragging who, only because I am not fully familiar with which European players use what models. But overall awesome and epic.

Really want to like it, I really do, but I just can't.
I recognize all the work which might have gone into this, but ... damn it, to some extent it is just bad.

Why is half of the movie in wolfcam? Why?
Majority it is just useless and does not add anything to the content, about a third of the frags are just ruined by mid-engagement nonsensical wolfcam angles.
If you want to make a frag movie, then do it. If you have to submit a mid-term project in wolfcam then go crazy, but don't combine the two.

The music was way off. While the tunes themselves were fine their placement within the movie was just wrong and did not sync up with the other content. Same soundtrack in a different sequence would have worked much better.



Could give more praise or critique, but I think I missed half of the content and things accompanying it because of all the wolfcam. Having seen majority of the tournaments and thus the games covered I remember quite a few of those frags and I can thankfully recall them from memory, even if the wolfcam made them look like random average frags.

Quite, but people who do not remember the frag as it was originally cannot see it in the movie really. Instead of seeing a well planned combination of various shots and positioning they see a casual point and click rail shot, cause majority of the pertinent action has been replaced by meaningless "behind the post" or "floor sliding" wolfcam action.

Another fragvid equivalent of Independence Day. Great job.

This is a great video that also gave me something to think about...

As usual, music in any video (film, tv series, clip...) does a heavy duty in passing emotions.
This video is a clear example.
In this case the music was 100% spot on because pro gamers are heroes and their battles are clash of epic proportion.
(And when you use Hans Zimmer music even showing a man taking a dump looks epic. Ask Nolan).

Showing players reactions, small ivew, and creating a stoyline is a great way to give a deeper meaning to the movie, and helps in not getting the audiance bored.

Now...
Quake live or Fps in general have to look better.
It is okey to have Fps with heavy edit possibilities for the players.
No problem, we all agree on this.

But if you want to bring people to watch Fps, and attract more spectatorsyou need the game to look cool.

By my experience the only Fps game that had that cool look and a more "romantic" feeling while playing it was UT99.
Gothic, violent, real like futuristic arena (Q3 maps are oke from a level design point of view but skull textures and infinite carvings on the wall just look ridiculous).
Everyone used to spec it with the 3rd person cam, it just looked too good.

By showing an impossible looking (in real life) arena you create a distance with the audience.
You need the spectators to feel more involved.

Put in ambient effects.
Make the map dinamic and level changing while playing.
Make it collapse, open a new room at min 5.00, whatever could give depth to the game itself.

Everything you add in a game will affect its skill level.

You can even add climate effect, why not?
As rain, or chill fog, whatever might help adding an extra layer to the game.

The Avatars...

I still think best avatars plus voice are from UT99.
They looked cool, moved cool and their voice tone were great with tons of editing possibilities.

As I was watching the movie and witnessing its epicness i was thinking: "what someone that has no insight of progaming would think by watching this?"

I'm sure he would come up with something as: "The venue are epic, the music is epic, the players are epic.
Still... they are chasing after a green puppet that flies around the map in a innatural way".

Give more dignity to the players by making the game look better.
Showing average people that pro gamers hunt and kill green puppets, skeleton or any other shit doesn't give them justice.

We are not kids anymore, and this is no kindergarden sport.

Give more animation to FPS Avatars and a option for in game play to turn them off, keep only 1 per movement kind, or possibilities to edit them so that players can possibily edit and choose between animations to give more deph to their avatar.

Give them taunt, give them cheering animation, give them fatigue animation (something as if dealt x damage in x time Avatar will have this reaction: shake head).
This will also help viewers understand what's going on and make shoutcast easier.

Even have the avatar talk to audience or to the player itself.

Give victory animations.

Create a connection between progamer heart beat and avatar behaviours.

Give personalized look for the top player in the world, or make the avatar itself look as them (It would be freaking cool imho).

Give them the chance to like "humiliate" the opponent.
Might be cutting their head off and show it to the crowd in a first person view or whatever you can imagine of.
You might say: "Oh no progamer will lose 2 sec to move the avatar on the dead body and let it perform the action!".

I ask you, why not?
Wouldn't that too be a display of skill?
Give up an edge you have while duelling to prove you are even better, that you are angry, folish, (a way to express emotions) ecc...
(exploding the avatar into jibs is not enough and is dated).

Make them real, diminuish the distance beetween the player and its avatar.

Every sport has eyecandies!

Half time show with cheerleader to fireworks or entrance music.
This sport as any other need a portion of "show" factor.
I'm not saying to bring cheerleader or performers i'm just saying give more attention to how a level looks, to how avatar looks and move, ambient sound too.

The game has too pole in the way it has too look:

1) The first one is for the player: cfg editing ecc... You know what i'm taking about, no need to explain.

2) The second one is (now) for the spectators.
Untill some years ago this wasn't a factor, now thanks to live streaming and big events with big venues, it is.

If you want to get respect from the outside world offer an adult entrateinment and give us (the players) dignity.
Stop with all that texture shit, skull or whatever it is.
We are not in the 90' anymore, Doom is not fashionable.

You want to be taken seriously?
Make the game look serious.

Untill you'll make us chase green puppets in a map full of skull we'll always be seen as nerds and losers.

Make the game look cool.

The gameplay is capped.
Hardly any FPS will be better than QL, a game with years and years of experience.
Everyone should start to look and think in different way.
How do you attract players?
By improving the gameplay?
I hardly think so, QL is almost perfect.
You won't attract a large audience by reducing by 1 pixel the hitbox or by small changes in weapon damage, speed or whatever...

This are my personal considerations, feedbacks are welcome.

It did. Its a very good WoT, and i thik that a lot of what you are saying should be implemented. But most of the visual stuff should have a bit of customisability (for the player). Like picmip and so on. Some degree of it should remain. But for spectators the ideas are very good. And I dont think that in a game as simple as quake (im not talking about the gameplay depth, im talking about the code, i mean cmon, its an old game and theres barely any scripting and so on, you catch my drift) these things shouldnt be THAT hard to implement, but their impact on the games public appearance would be great. :)

Minor complaint: since the video was somewhat dark, it wasn't always obvious when frags actually occurred... most of the time there weren't any sparks and the model just turned black.

Still very good, though, and I really liked the mix of player shots and gameplay.

This is why I love quake! Brilliant movie, 10/10, no doubts.

Not all frag movies should be about the best frags ever/or lately (technically), we have enough double air rocket,lg lock,rail hit with a 360 spin frags...just take a look at some ra3 frag movies to get your lol frags fix. movie is original with showing the environment around the players and emotion and how much it all matters at tourneys. Movie isnt about the best frags ever, but some of the most important frags in the last while and how clutch and badass all the players are.There should be a version two with quakecon 2013 though...:or make another movie please! someone pay this dude to do it! winz u around....P. That rapha speech gave me chills. But i do agree maybe too much lg fights and not enough combos of frags.Too much one frag to the next

Very well made but boring. I stopped watching about 10 minutes in as I wasn't engaging with it at all.

EDIT: Perhaps less wolfcam between frags? Whenever an awesome frag would occur it felt like the movie was going to kick off, but instead it cut to a third person shot and it completely killed the momentum for me. This happened after nearly every frag and after 10 minutes it was quite frustrating and to be honest... dull :(

the frags in themselves are secondary, it's all about the atmosphere and feeling quake flow through your veins

Epic. Just pure awesomeness. I´m glad the producer was not tempted to only focus on the older games; for instance, a recent one I am thinking of is the comeback in the ztn game Cypher - Fazz, unbelievable. 10/10.

I have to say that this movie, quality wise, was pretty horrendous on youtube. Streamed it from trance's site and it looked SPLENDID.

It's strange cause at trance's site all the 1st person scenes look like they were sped up. But the audio still fits perfectly, and only those scenes seem faster. So what the hell?

Conclusion: at trance site/or downloaded file, it looks like it should. Also youtube is fucking shit, as usual.

Rename it 3rd person front view slowmo recam and razer commercials 3.

It's a more fitting name.

really nice that you featured all the known ql shoutcasters and esl carmac. was that just luck at the end or your totally goal (on a list).

i have the feeling that you zoom and move the camera (from down to high) on the real players and faces. technically how to do that?

the cams are very good and make always sense. did you do a few "wild chaotic" cams for experience? or did you like more the simple style.

in 1 scene you use blur on plasma balls. would be cool to use this blur/fade out thing more often because this effect is epic. on first watch i thought what match was played on what tourney. but i got to the conclusion, it doesnt really matter. its a movie, not a documentary :) your movie making skill is really impressive. 21 minutes length is very risky, i think many movie makers would fail to do this - not you.

- i do all the stuff with "sony vegas" except the background "lion-animation". the slowmo sound is not that difficult.
you just rightclick the audio and go to "time strech/pitch shift" and choose a method and check or uncheck the "lock to strech" function, and choose one of the 2 variations which suits the scene better (realtime slowmo sound and i would say "fake" slowmo sound)

- i think you mean some of the plasma/rocket sounds. after finish recording all the scenes i notice that some audios had some errors in it. so i fix that with EQ settings and a audio "phaser" effect. for me it sounded pretty good and i choose to use the same settings in 2-3 other scenes.

then these original camera men are crazy :) i never recognise that these camera people do "action cams" on events. funny.

There were too many livescenes of players and those were often not related to anything (following or previous frags), cut those out the next time. Or include the livefootage but don't just throw it in but have an idea behind it that shows. Those probably extended the length to be a tad too long (was struggling to make it to the end, probably like many others who haven't seen about quake might also), make it more compact and action-packed the next time but just slightly.

Good job nonetheless!

like in m2 i dont put "playerfaces" randomly in the movie. I always show you the person who had a fight 1-2 scenes beforehand or afterwards.

That's not related enough then, atleast to me it wasn't. Make it one scene before/after and it probably would've been ok. Optionally make it so that the livefootage is always after the frag, a consistent pattern could make it easier and more enjoyable for the viewer!

i cant really draw this picture in my head, if this is good or bad. just saying a consistent pattern in a 21 minute movie could be strong repetitive. or not, dont know :)

On a side note, was rl knockback implemented in a different way in 2009?
Some frags on t9 are just weird for me (wasn't playing back then)

RL knockback changed as a side effect of the hitbox changes.

I don't know if this is what you meant. But there is a bug, where sometimes the knockback just sends you straight up, losing all speed. Quite annoying indeed.

i mean frags like the one at 4 minute mark, it's not the first time i see these weird knockbacks in a tourney with t9 (so i assume it was 2009).
I've never experienced this thing that's why i'm asking if something was different back then
