I actually expected a really close dahang-evil-rapha fight but somehow dahang underperfomed today

Most people I talked to thought it would either be raphavsevil or dahangvsevil.

and i dunno, cooller was the number 1 quake 3 player in the world when he was speaking bad english. These results aren't really that surprising to me. I consider evil to be the best quake 3 player right now. I'd say a lot of people do. For quite some time now.

I must say that, while at first I expected the final to be dahang-evil, when both of them went to the losers bracket I thought the final would end up rapha-dahang.

I felt that evil replaced rapha as the best player during dreamhack winter. I think theres a notable difference between the skill of rapha and evil. Evil quite a bit better than rapha.

There's even a quote from evil himself out there that says that he think rapha plays a standard dry game. And that's he very predictable. Like coollers opinion of zero4 (nobody without rail, he gets nervous when he's losing), evil seems not to think too high of raphas skill. The results speak for them self, in both cases.

That's really interesting what evil said. I can see why. Rapha plays a certain way against certain styles and players, which seems 'standard'.

Of course, rapha wouldn't be the player he is if he wasn't adaptable.

I did the mistake some time ago, expecting dahang to beat rapha at some tourney. Nope. rapha can just outmindgame any NA player every time. They all have a rapha complex by now.

i feel so sorry for the poor dude, he was either better or clearly better 3 maps in a row before tox. but what can you do. 1 random rocket to the lava decided more than the perfect map lock that lasted like forever.

I wouldn't go there to say he was better on Lost World. Yes, his aim looked superior, he was in control most of the time. Still, keeping it that close and not giving frags away is super hard, so in my opinion Rapha deserved it.

well go check the armor and mh pickups. rapha did the same as zero4, go ultra passive, avoid evil at all costs, and hope he fucks up somehow, or just pray for a moment of pure luck. as a rocket bouncing the guy to the lava.

i'm not saying it's easy to avoid getting fragged vs such control, cause it isn't, but a random bounce decided the map where rapha was being outaimed and outstacked pretty much the whole time. it's not like he doesn't know it himself and i'm pointing out something not obvious at all...

i think evil got screwed during qcon, but i completely disagree with you here.
evil should have jumped through the tele instead of rjing for ra.
before that, evil should have stuck to rl instead of pulling out lg or he should have backed off once he knew rapha had the advantage in the fight.
that frag was completely evil's fault. there was no luck about it.

from what i remember, evil had the upper hand even after he retreated from the mh fight and started backing off to position himself for the ra. and then the bounce happened. bounce is just random, even if evil ate some rocket splash instead of a bounce to the lava, rapha would still be unable to come after him. that is, that wouldn't be logical, he technically could take a risk but...

i guess it's true that his rj to ra could have been performed sideways/faster at the moment in order to evade at least a part of the lg.

well he had the map locked down but he didnt force any frags out of it, that was what enabled rapha to win the map with a single good/lucky fight.

I think ddk told it before the grand final started. I'm not really sure about it (I was drowsy as fuck trying to stay awake) but I think he said something like ZeRo4 was standing next to evil and moved his legs and arms. Unfortunately it made the table where evil was playing to shake, so evil had to use google translate to tell that to ZeRo4 and ask him to stop or something like that.

Might be wrong at 20000% though, someone will surely be more precise.

I think DHW'12 win from ev1l has more merit than raphas QC'13. Why? Because on Dreamhack they had a proper cubicle on main stage so players could feel comfortable. Because Dreamhack didnt had a light focused directly on rapha's face while he was warming up. Because Dreamhack didnt delayed the finals, or well in that case made them so early that it corresponded with raphas normal 5:00 am on the morning (ev1l played the finals at close to that hour for russia, were he was sleeping a couple of days before finals) to show stupid games nobody wanted to watch. And most importantly because DH didnt changed classic rules.

Dont get me wrong rapha is an oustanding player, but at this level of talent minimal fuckups likes the one i describe have huge implications on results.

After the first map, i would have given u$s 7k (1st+2nd/2) to each player for the best game in quake history :D

Rapha (and Cypher) were not in top shape at DHW because of Shootmania. So imo this QC win has more merit.

Evil had to fight back precisely because rapha defeated him before.

Rapha's speed and depth of tought while playing and speed of execution are raw talents that are and probably will be unmatched in quake. Period.

group stages didnt really matter why? because it wasn't like a traditional group stage format. With a traditional group stage format the top 4 players wouldnt be in the same group. this group format was just to get players some good games.


what mattered was the DE bracket. thats where things get carried over. in the playoffs rapha won 3-2 over EVIL.

imagine in the NBA they add regular season wins to the playoff series? that would be ridiculous.

The "funny" thing is that if it was 2xbo5 evil was going to win. I think ztn is almost certain for him to take+he was the better overall player from both. He isn't and never was that strong on toxicity tho.

I don't know about ztn. The ztn they played on group stage was extremely close. evil won 11 to 10 by hiding at the end against a stacked rapha. The ztn played in WB was won by rapha quite decisively 8 to 2 by rapha. Why are you so confident evil is sure to win ztn?

But from what I experienced it somehow feels like 0.1 accel at 400dpi.

they should have split up the games between all 3 days or duel games on friday instead of thursday. it would have given the euros some extra time to adjust.

Evil is perhaps the scariest player in QL. His aim is surgical and his aggression is relentless. However, the grand final is simply more evidence that brain > aim. Rapha is the tried and true greatest. This tournament would have been amazing with cypher, tox, cooller and strenx in.

Rapha is always cool, calm and collected. Patience is highly dependent on brain anyway. What we saw on Lost World and Toxicity was his experience coming through.

Agreed. Rapha is not a "mastermind", he just waits and waits and waits for the good moment. He never tries to force anything, since this game seems to always punish the active play and reward the reactive passive play. Fucking lame and fucking boring.

When Evil is hitting, it's astonishing to watch the domination. HOWEVER, the start of his Furious Heights game against DaHang was frankly disappointing. I am not sure whether it was nerves or what, but with how that game started, it makes no sense that he would have had to make that crazy comeback to win.

I think what separates Rapha and Evil at this point is that Rapha plays consistently well for 10 minutes straight whereas Evil will go beast-mode for moments in the game. For Evil, that makes him exciting to watch but he might need more discipline to start winning these big, international tournies consistently.
