Everyone who says Quake is dead should google (if even possible) some old news posts when Thresh, Shub, Blue, Makavelli (+100 others) officially either quit or said they would.

We are now in the summer of 2013 and you can still play many of the different Quake versions in competitive mode or just public. It's not the same perhaps, and it might get better or worse. However, you can't say Quake is dead.

ahum...

Never said I'd quit. I actually said I think if quake is still around when I'm 60 I will still be playing it. 'Quitting' what is a hobby, or a passion, is just dumb in my opinion.

It's like I'd go saying 'hey im quitting playing guitar'... I'm never going to stop playing guitar, or listening to guitarists, or whatever. I might get less good or play less, but why would anyone say he'd 'quit' it is beyond my comprehension.

Because when you're emotional right after a painful loss u can say stupid shit like 'fuck this, I quit'. But ofcourse when you're calm u take it back. That's what I meant. I imagined everyone would have experienced this, I know a lot of players have.

its true I still need a good lan result... I started dueling in 2010 and I just didnt have the experience or the proper duel skills/mechanisms to make any result when you had players such as cypher, cooller, stermy, strenx, rapha, avek and whatnot playing. I've attended a lot of lans with 16 players and I was hardly a top 16 contender back then :)

yeah, that makes sense. you played a lot of lans when ql was at its prime.

well, but doesnt matter, nowadays you are in top 5, or almost at it. and cooller, strenx, cypher (rip) still play!

By Belgium dem0n  - Reply to #147
Naaah I cant say I'm top 5. I'd rather say I *might* upset here and there much more than I did before. You have absolute beasts with a ton of experience like cooller, cypher, rapha, dahang, strenx, killsen, evil... and then players that are more in my division like p0ni, guard, fazz, toxjq, pavel, baksteen, eventhough I put pavel in 'my' division in that he has never really shown anything on lan either except for incredibly close matches vs top players such as cypher (aka adroits).

Well, just wish we had more lans, because I'm eager to pursue my progression and see how I can perform on lan now that I think the experience started to kick in. Usually I'd go to a lan beeing thankful I was there in the first place. Now I slowly started to consider winning any game and any matchup !

most comp tf2 matches (or maybe it was maps, can't remember) in NA last like +40 minutes back when I watched it. That's not fast-paced. And like somebody else said, a lot of the time it's just both teams spamming a choke point waiting for uber.

For my part he's my favorite Quake Live player and i'd say this is a very sad day for quake. I really would have liked to see him in a LAN for the last time, lets say Quakecon 2013. But its pretty obvious that hes very tired and looks like he lost motivation even for that, so yea i hope he has success in his future projects and wish him the best on his life.

The year was 2011. The event was Asus. It was the semi final between Cypher and Ash. Cypher has always had nice LAN-etiqs, except for the Zadrot Ebaniy incident. Ash, who was the underdog was completely destroying him, first on hub then on ztn, hitting mad pixel rails and just outplaying him. Cypher started calling time-outs and just whining. I wish i had the VOD but it was on Own3d. The worst part is that he called Ash a noob basically, and said it was complete bullshit, basically behaving like a 12yo who's playing Quake the first time vs 2000elo CA ppl.

The worst part was that he insulted Ash, and called time-outs for no reason.

No, he's terrible at hiding it. It almost looks like he acted way more mature when he was 16, now he's just a pompous kid with an attitude.

He's a killer player and definitely one of the most if not the most entertaining, energetic players in term of gameplay - his damage output is insane and he's always pulling off some crazy-ass shit never-seen-before clutch jumps and attacks.

That is slowly becoming less of an excuse and his recent (re)actions are becoming more and more obnoxious.

Cypher was only the best in quake 3 when most of the other top players stopped playing quake 3 and there were hardly any tourneys for it.

When many of them came back for quakelive around 2009, it was Rapha who ultimately established himself as the new king of quake.

Rapha has won more titles and more money in quakelive than anyone.
He is the best.

Nothing to for me to deal with apart from being right as usual.

that's insanely important, both of those pictures, with fraze on number 3 - which is clearly legit, while rapha having 1 challenger on his NA servers, ever. also - clearly legit. strenx is number 1 even though he never won a ql lan, but hey, you need brain to analyze those pictures, it's not that easy. don't feel bad.

the money earned is just a product of rapha having his best year when quakelive had the most tournaments by far. cooller's best years were 2003-2005, and he won as much as 2 major LANs over that period.

so it's more like _what is there to win_ when you can do it, rather than how much did you actually win. it's hard to get money when there are no tournaments.

i think rapha has 1 more title than cypher in ql, but cypher beat rapha like 4 times in a row now over the last couple of tournaments, and when cypher was out (3:2 evil) rapha got beaten even more (3:1 evil).

just to put things into perspective.

you were never ever right, and you will never ever be.

deal with it.

HAHA! so you're blaming Rapha for being successful when the most money, pressure and tourneys were concerned?

Your laughable logic is there for all people to see, you'll clearly try and delude yourself and others to obtaining the point you want.

Cypher was around that time too, so he had every chance to win, and unlike Rapha, he has MUCH MORE tourney experience coming into quakelive.

Unlike Cypher, Rapha has not quit and will continue to win more money and tourneys. Not that he needs to becaue he has already won more of the things that count in quakelive than anyone.

Money and titles.

again this shit, arguing with a high school dropout / below average iq person. as if i need to waste my energy on simplifying stuff for you. but whatever.

i'm not blaming anyone for being successful, i'm blaming circumstances for cypher being as much as 1 tournament short due to tournaments _not existing as much as they did_ when rapha won ONE more.

cypher was around for a lot more than rapha, so it's not really comparable if one loses motivation and the other one doesn't.

i have never met a person in my life who manages to be MORE WRONG about virtually anything than you.

Now you're making excuses for Cypher losing motivation. Lol, the guy is like 23 years old and he's lost motivation!!!!

Whose fault is that.

So he won less times, he won less money and he's quit at 22/23?

Now you're making excuses for Cypher losing motivation. Lol, the guy is like 23 years old and he's lost motivation!!!!

Whose fault is that.

i am making excuses? what the fuck do you care about someone losing motivation? how old is he supposed to be? he's been into professional gaming since god knows when, he attended like 5 million tournaments and now he doesn't get to lose motivation for a video game?

So he won less times, he won less money and he's quit at 22/23?

look, you fucking 80iq parasite. quakelive is not the first game cypher played. cypher won quake4 ESWC in 2006, beating toxic in the process, at the age of SIXTEEN. the guy was a champion in quake4, quake3, and quakelive. he has beaten everyone within the last month or so, it's not like he quits cause he can't win. if he doesn't enjoy the game at this moment, then that's it.

that 5k difference between him and rapha is crucial only in your heavily limited brain.

i feel like i'm talking to a chimp. that's how i feel.

Quakecon 2013 champ Rapha, Cypher didn't even bother turning up.
Where's your god now! (cheering on the champ via the internet)

So that's more majors and more money won. Even though he had that accolade before.

Oh for fuck's sake, it seems you want to argue semantics here. *sigh*

Being a top division player is not enough? Cypher has won matches against Rapha, Rapha versus Cypher, Strenx won and lost against either of the two, so has Cooller and the other players have as well.

He's on top of his game. Sure, you could argue that his standard has fallen over the years, and you'd have strong argument there; however, he's not barely winning against mid-level duelers on a regular basis- he's still more than able not only to compete, but to place at the top level events; his level will fluctuate over time, as will anyone else's. Don't forget that human beings are unable to consistently reach a 100% efficiency in practically anything they do, much less so when some ridiculous constraints are placed upon them- hit 90% RG more frequently than the other guy, maybe hit 40% LG on more maps than the other guy, have more impressive combo- and air-rockets than the other guy and so on.

My point being, we are effectively comparing oranges and staplers here, when certain constraints are enforced we will inevitably end up with one result, while we will with a contrary one once the parameters to compare with are changed there. Surely being top 8 is being on the top, here in QL; the greatly subjective discourse of "My dad can beat your dad" will not get our discussion anywhere. He's as on top right now as is Rapha or Cooller, because Quake is not a perfectly balanced and just system (hell, even single-weapon, single-map, single-location plays aren't), luck and chance are just as integral as mechanical skill and cognitive ability; there's no control parameter or environment to measure skill objectively, nor is there a even scale to facilitate that... In the end, our own personal opinions will pick a subjective champion, and if we manage to convince someone else to our point of view, it will be a nice bonus to reward us for our time. It all comes down to which cherry we decide to pick, in order to point out flaws or brilliance of our subject to support our personal view.

I'm happy for him that he's retiring before he's in the colloquial gutter, that's being on top as far as I'm concerned. As an example outside of Quake, take Sebastien Loeb- he's retiring after achieving 9 consecutive World Rally Champion titles; Ogier is faster than him, Hirvonen is more consistent than him, Sordo will give a more than a run for his money on the black stuff and Latvala likewise on the loose; but sure, he's won and lost in an unstable environment where the next competitor will either have a very clear advantage or disadvantage than the previous depending on conditions, not even mentioning factors like having a shit day or not being able to focus; it compares to QL in that there's always a winner and a loser, and sometimes, only skill is not enough, not that you can measure or compare it with anything anyway, and the "you're only as good as your last tournament" sentiment is wrong from the get-go due to that very reason. Also, there's always the right cherry and the wrong cherry to reflect our perception of reality somewhere in there, too.

Don't take this as some shrink "two opposing viewpoints can coexist together" bullshit; I'm just trying to take this to a more objective and less opinionated direction, as well as explaining my genuine opinion.

Oh, and as much as I love Cypher, I'm a hardcore Rapha fanboy, a thousand times over, and that's a very fair estimate. Still though, I stand by my previous statement. Hope you don't take in my post in the wrong light.

You seemed happy to try and attack me when it came to saying I had no cash. I'm happy to to counter that if you are.

I thought so. I liked the bit where you pretended you're not doing it to avoid embarrassing yourself. When you're nearly 30 and spend all day bitching on a game forum.

That was really convincing. Along with you refusing to show anyone what you do as a job/education in real life. I can't imagine why.
Yet you still talk like you have both!

spending 10 years on this site alone to defend your online reality is just the online escape you desperately try to talk about. every time you say "online escape" is basically pissing in your own mouth. cause that is ALL you do. an online escape. 10 years and counting of your sad online escape.

20000+ posts on this site alone talking shit about a story that has changed 20 times already, and that noone cares about. that's what you call....

wait for it...

AN ONLINE ESCAPE.

all these posts trying to defend a sad virtual reality you created for yourself point to health problems. you're a fat (picture), old (fact), failed at life (self admitted) chav, with no perspective whatsoever (say hi to your brother). you even manage to call other people gaming degenerates, when actually you celebrate losses as achievements in every game you ever played (facts, esr archive).

i have no motive to prove anything to you, and you'll need to deal with that. i've said it already, there are people on esr who know me outside of esr, so my education, job, life, whatever, well... it's not really a mystery. i can point you to those so feel free to ask whatever you wish.

now, after dealing with that >

on the other hand, i asked you to show me your rare contract, that is, a piece of paper expired 250 years ago, which now has a value of a glass holder. you folded. you know why, and i know why. posting pictures with a cloud of text is not even worth mentioning.

honestly, the part about a jab to the head irl is probably the part which made me feel sorry for you the most. i've seen your picture jamie, and that's just... i don't know. just don't go there.... that could be even worse than the rare contract and renault 5 ebay fail, or the depression incident with the esr view counter. think again, please.

"you know nothing about me,"

That's because you share nothing, the fact that you share nothing and write thousands of words about me, tells me everything I need to know about you.

The fact that you think averaging 5 posts a day on a website is all I do, when doing that would take less time and investment in one of those 10 minute duels mopes you lock yourself in day in day out for hours at an end only amuses me further.

Remember you're the one hiding behind a cloak of anonymity like the coward you and so many losers on this site are.

Like I said, you don't fool me. the most basic form of human interaction evades you, you're just another coward troll on a gaming site living out some split personality.

You prove this continually by avoiding any link to the real you.

All I gotta do is keep exposing this. You seem to pride yourself on having a self convincing answer for everything, but asking you the most basic question about who you are what do you do so the world can see terrifies you into submission every time.

People like you only play games because its a natural branch you hit as you tumble from real life.

also, 5 post a day? that's reduced since the last time you tried to calculate that.

also, multiply the actual number of posts per day with the average number of lines in your post, and then you can shove your online escape up your perspectiveless ass.

No need for word of mouth. Why all the secrecy.

Just show us all a bit about your education and career, its quite a simple question that people ask, and one you seem quite obsessed with when it comes to others.

I joined this site since 2002, since then about 21,000 posts over a 11+ year period.

It doesn't take long to type out a reply, like I said, nowhere near as long as 1 single 10 minute duel. That would burn off way more effort.

I got plenty of perspective, look at what I'm doing to you?
Exposing your flawed logic about me posting on a site, only cos you want me to leave, you know why I don't, because I enjoy getting under peoples skin like yours while I'm immune to your presence :)

Its a sign of power and dominance more than anything else.

You have not proven me as a pathological liar at all.

Like I said, this is all part of your tactic, hiding behind an alias and calling people names, there is no accountability for you being wrong.
(Other than me punking your alias and persona)

I just keep pointing this out, and your continued use of that tactic only confirms who the liar is, you're such a liar and a weak person you won't even define yourself.

You display the most common trait of a nobody and you know it.

you made up a story that makes no sense, because you lack intelligence. you've been getting called up on it, for 10 years. you choose "not to prove anyone wrong but to wind people up cause it's more fun".

well, choose away. i'm also having fun. you don't get to ask anything as long as it's like that.

i don't consider myself a gamer due to the fact that i played no videogames from 2010 till a couple of months ago. nor did i ever try to be a GAMER. i play for fun, when i play.

but that's not really the topic, cause your 20k+ posts are NOT about videogames. except when you celebrate losses, or beating cooller without being on the same server as him. they are about your personal wannabe life.

i gotta go now, but i'm sure you're gonna show me that 10 times dodged rare contract when i come back. then we can talk some more.

What kind of investment is that?

Its totally one sided, you want my name, past location of work, but you won't even share anything. I ha ve already given you way more info, you have given nothing. I don't care if you believe me, at lest I have given you something. You have given nothing which is remotely credible about you.

Like I said, this is just small insight into your one sided investment.

You don't consider yourself a gamer, yet you play videogames and talk about them on a forum.

You're utterly one sided and unconvincing. A joke.

thing is, the stuff you're supposed to prove goes back years and years. i'll quote on this one: you don't want to prove anything, even though you could, cause it's more fun for you to _wind people up_

endquote.

i don't know do i really need to add anything.

you shared nothing. when you think about it, and i'm sure you have many many times, noone would ask you anything if your story made any sense. but it doesn't and therefore you're supposed to prove that the story is true. if you talked about flipping burgers, or working in a garage, or whatever, noone would say anything. but you stick with a story that lacks any logic and/or sense whatsoever, and that requires a proof. that's fair, at least.

Bottom line is you still continue to share nothing about you other than implying you have this or that.

How is anyone supposed to find anything about you if you tell us nothing?

Why are you so secretive, if you have a degree in marketing and economics, I trust you have something to show us?

My past is only of interest to you and others because it gives me a rank over you. And you don't like it.

You cannot be critical of someone for not providing intricate details of their past when you will not even provide the most basic ones that allow yourself to be authenticated.

People get employed by employers all the time based on their ability at a game that developer is developing..

Thresh for example worked with idsoftware on one of the quakes and as a thanks I believe someone was coded in to acknowledge that.

Seth K was capcom community manager for street fighter based on his involvement in the fighting game community as a fan.

I'm glad this brings a smile to your face, cos I sure enjoy highlighting what an inaccurate clueless loser you are time after time.

your ability to play a game is irrelevant, cause a 15 years old kid playing singleplayer arcade game in a mall is not something anyone is interested in. you could have at least tried to make people believe that you were winning some tournaments or whatever back then, but i guess the problem is, it could have been checked. in your sad little limited brain. there is a place for a logical event where a guy is shopping with his girlfriend or whatever and sees a kid playing arcades. he's delighted with the fact that the random child is beating the singleplayer game and he wants to bring him back to his company so the kid can say what is good and what isn't.

to a normal person, this story is insulting. to an idiot such as you, it's pretty good.

Back in the day fighting games in the arcade did work like this, would be alot of people gathered around them with the winner staying on. I remember seeing this first hand with virtua fighter, street fighters, killer instinct and mortal kombat. People would know who the best/better players are as the arcades used to be very busy.
Also this was before the internet was big so tournaments were pretty low key localised events if they did happen and like i say before internet so not gonna be much on record of anything that did happen.

"No its not, his whole motivation is because he is intimidated by what I claim to have done. If he was not, he would not care."

His point is more to do with the fact that you tend to both place emphasis on the importance of gaining status within the Gaming world on a professional level AND making claims, some of which can be considered far-fetched and/or illogical. I don't see him being intimidated at all, I would put his high response rate to you in this thread to a "PEOPLE ARE BEING WRONG ON THE INTERNET, I MUST CORRECT THEM"-type personality.

"And He's from a poor part of the world, he's likely to be even more adversely affected by hearing people earning good money."

So in your opinion, every country that's in "Eastern Europe" (this is questionable by the way - normally "Eastern Europe" is attributed to Warsaw Pact countries, of which Yugoslavia was not a part of. Croatia is considered Balkan, Mediterranean, Southern European and pan-Yugoslavian. If you wanted to make some sort of edgy statement in front of a Croatian, compare them poisitively to Bosnia and/or Serbia and highlight the close historical ties they've had. Saying they are just poor and from Eastern Europe just makes you look misinformed and xenophobic rather than "edgy").

I find the concept of a Croatian holiday starting with landing your turbo-prop plane on a mud runway and be immediately surrounded by goats and barefoot orphans begging for money and stealing luggage while the propellers haven't yet stopped rotating yet, in a Borat-esque manner, as hilarious as the next guy, but unfortunately it's not entirely true: countries you berate for being "quite poor" actually tend to have rich tradition, a stable military infrastructure, developed import/export and high tertiary education rates. And a lower inflation rate than the UK according to www.tradingeconomics.com , whose website I found through google).

Additionally, no country in the world has an equal distribution of wealth amongst its citizens, a statistic which tends to fluctuate based on circumstances (in layman's terms: just because you reside in a poorer country, it does not necessarily mean that you yourself have never seen any monetary values in excess of £10 at any one single time) - and I actually wondered myself, so used the magical power of Google to find a list of millionaires in Croatia and Wales to compare the two.

I was able to find some information, as published by news sites of their respective countries:
http://www.itv.com/news/wales/2012-04-29/sund...-revealed/
http://www.nacional.hr/en/clanak/33809/croatias-50-wealthiest

And it was incredibely inconclusive: even after application of transfer rates (the easy part) because ITV actually was citing the Sunday Times Rich 1000 Richest People in the UK with a cut-off point of £72 million, while the Nacional just generated a list of the top-50 richest (and a cut-off point of 23 million Euros), it's hard to compare directly. So it proved nothing apart from there are multi-millionaires in both and that out of the 1000 richest people in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, only 24 or 2.4% (if you consider commercial partners and spouses as one entry, 28 if you don't) hail from Wales. Which is only half below the forecasted result, as Wales contributes to about 5% of the UK's population.

So, yea, nothing simple unless you are either stupid or xenophobic.

That doesn't sound well no matter in what part of the world he is and shows he made a lot of bad decisions, including not finishing high school and lying over the interwebz for more than 10 years (several threads and proof on that matter).

Now he is looking for attention on yet another thread by making absurd and illogical statements. It's best to ignore him, though serves as a reminder of what can happen if you go full retard on wasting time, daydreaming and taking this personal.

Cypher probably wants to avoid that, as for him there's no point in playing if he can't be the best anymore. Personally, every time I read "Jamerio" to me it means "better get back to work".

I didn't say your every claim is riduculous. Purely having to an award-winning project (or some other claim of note) is not far-fetched, it's more to do with your other claims to be a childhood prodigy of MotorX, amazing amounts of monetary in-flow and all-round awesomeness.

Especially considering how you put your claims of gaming industry prowess on such a pedestal. You pull the BAFTA card more so than raythenoob did with his hatred of those two tierslumming dudes from QL Forums, pulling it out left and right. Yes, it's cool and quite an interesting fact and all, but the game in question was released in the last century, and it is your main staple at claiming being a high-flyer of game development. Perhaps it's time to move on, especially considering you have gone through a change in career as you say you are no longer actively working in game development anymore?

"all i do is point out that your story makes no sense,"

That's because you're an idiot.

EXAMPLE 1: You seemed perplexed I got a job because I did not have a PC, you thought a console developer who emplyed someone who played games would give a shit about that, especially when they did not even use traditional PC's and instead use silicon graphics workstations.

EXAMPLE 2: You seem perplexed someone can get employment by a developer for playing games based on their ability at that game.

Yet gamers get jobs all the time by devs of the games they excel in.
Level Designers get jobs all the time based on mods they make.
Testers get promoted through the ranks all the time into designers and producers. Its not even an issue to anyone with a clue or who is not blinded by their own inability to make a dime form gaming.

Go onto SRK and ask if any of them were employed by capcom based on their street figther skills.

You're totally and utterly clueless and bound by the anger that you never made a dime from gaming or never will. The reasons you refuse to show us anything about you is because you ruined your life through gaming. I'll remind you of that till the end of time.

Just to people saying 'quake is dying blah blah' -> nonsense

Ran some numbers today.

Quakelive duels have seen a month on month increase in games since August last year.

Quakelive duels are now at the same level as before the infamous July 2012 update that removed map voting for non-premium.

More clan arena games have been tracked this month than ever before in the history of quakelive ranks (since 2011)

June 2013 saw more duels played by qlranks than any month before April 2012.

More people played duels in 2013 on average per month than 2012.

divide that by three then subtract extremerz 1200 alt accounts... and we actually have 12800 people playing ffa worldwide.

There's been nothing but a decrease in all gametype activity in the usa.
On average theres only 3 servers(east coast) for ffa that are full which includes toronto , chicago, texas, virginia. Lets say these servers are completely full including specs which is 16 players max. 16x3= 48. So 48 people playing at any given time... LOL

Whilst that might be true, i'd rather watch Cypher play than the players that replace him. For me, the definition of alive or dead within the context of Quake refers to the players participating. There will be nobody to replace Cypher, Rapha, Toxjq, Av3k, Fox, Strenx, DaHanG, Chance, GaRpY, CZM, Fazz, Evil, Madix, K1llsen, Spart1e, Noctis, Cooller... the list goes on and on.

Can you imagine a DreamHack without all of the above players, excluding the ones that have long gone? Whilst players like Twister and Baksteen might be decent enough... better than some of the above players perhaps... they are not (and will never be) the faces of Quake 3 / Quake Live in my book.

It will be different for everybody, maybe in part it's because i'm no longer an active player, but that's how i view the current state of things as QL moves forward.

I agree, but I think that's mostly because it's hard to accept that decision without a decent explanation, and people are a bit frustrated by it.
with competitive ql being active like it hasn't been in a while, quakecon and dreamhack around the corner, this just kind of seems like a "didn't win all the tournaments? time to quit" rage move.
obviously cypher can do what he wants, but he hasn't done much to make himself likeable lately

this
and he never had to play online that much, a year ago it was just a way to get back into shape when a lan was coming up

what could be dismissed as "online bullshit, cu on lan" became the norm. once he lost to evil, he got serious and destroyed everybody (circa faceit winter season finale) then lost interest again

someone here said he probably experienced the same frustrations cooller had when playing him and I agree. against evil, poni and even demon, you can see he's frustrated by their style because they don't make sense to him but it still works because they hit a lot

I know he lost against evil on lan before but I think his emotions got to him, that was almost the case at adroits until av3k (now lan retired, another element) intervened, he explained it himself. so yeah... you wrap all that in a nice package and that's a good start as to why he quit, couldn't bother proving himself again after he's won so much

that and the part we don't know, his real life

hm yeah, but it's still not the most satisfying explanation. he hasn't been motivated, but he's been playing up until he lost that last time against evil and then strenx. it boils down to rage because he couldn't win everything, and that mindset is just a bit weak in my book, which is why I can't sympathize too much

motivated or not, simply tweeting "I'm done with quake" after losing 2 games seems like a butthurt decision, and yeah it makes it look like he's quitting because he can't be the uncontested number 1 anymore. this is going to bug a few people because quitting at this point isn't helping competitive quake at all.
if there are some other motives it would be nice if he gave some kind of explanation for his supporters at least. again, cypher obviously doesn't owe anything to anyone and can do what he wants, but it's not surprising that not everybody is going to praise his decision this way.

for example I don't think we'd ever see rapha quitting because dahang and zero4 are having a good run right now, I guess that's where mindsets and personalities differ

you're wrong because you think he quit on a knee-jerk reaction to losing two games. it would be narrow minded to solely base quitting on losing two games. maybe he quit because there's two LANs a year left for quake? how about people get older and need to consider a career? maybe online events are dull compared to lan events? I don't know why he quit, but neither do you

it's borderline disrespectful to assume someone like cypher quit because he's "butthurt about losing two games".

well that's not quite how I phrased it, but okay.
if you look at my initial reply, this was my take on why some people are being disrespectful and some (including me) find it hard to sympathize with him right now. that he posted that mere tweet shortly after losing is a fact, and I'm not sure how you can deny that it feels like a ragey move. of course it couldn't have been solely based on that, but it seems like it was the last straw.
and do you think he'd be "unmotivated, bored with online tournaments etc." and quitting if he was still winning everything and had no problem countering the aggressive styles of evil and the likes? maybe, but I think it's legitimate to speculate otherwise. I'm all for being respectful, but I don't think just because someone is amazing at quake they get to have some sort of godlike status where noone is allowed to doubt the way they act.

I think we'll all be glad to see a statement from him, or better yet see him playing again

I doubt it. for example: don't know how many people saw that, but about two weeks ago cypher had a long discussion with strenx on his stream about how he needs to find a way to counter evil, how much it pisses him off to get rushed randomly etc. and they were also talking about stuff like possibly going to quakecon/dreamhack and practicing together. did not seem like someone who doesn't qive a fuck, quite the opposite.

but yeah I guess I'm a moron and need to fuck off with my heretical accusations. I mean cypher has never been known to rage easily or to be a sore loser, I must be doing too much bath salts to be making that shit up

Cypher has been known as a nice and funny kid. Whenever u saw him during an interview after he lost his game, you just wanted to give him a hug and tell him that everythings going to be ok, because there was no anger, just sadness.
In fact, his only famous rage moment was the hilarious "This wont happen on lan" to Jibo, but Cypher sure took his lesson after he got dismantled later that year.

Yeah, he hasnt been acting like that for the last couple of months, but everyone who quit quake (or other hobby) at least once has to recognise the symptoms: rage, frustration. It always happens when something that used to be so much fun now feels like shit - and you dont understand why. You see everything your opponents do as dumb, still, somehow, they get away with it, despite your ingenious skills. Cypher stuck around to see if winning will bring the fun back, but no, it doesnt work that way. Once the joy is gone, you have to take a break, you have to move on. Cypher felt this coming, as he said in march hes going to retire soon when he got interviewed by russians.
Good news is most of the quakers will eventually come back.

Even if he had some serious real life issues that would keep him from enjoying quake, why would you expect him to share that?
Would you? Would you share that you broke up with gf, that your uncle is ill or whatever, so a couple of nerds could sigh their "Oh, I didnt know that :/ "? Im sure I would not. Its his business and he has the right to keep it all that for himself, or for people that he cares about.

Most of us will remember him as the best quake 3/ quakelive player ever, because thats who he was. Whenever he was on form, it was next level quake and nobody could touch him.

Little does it matter what you or the other couple of retards regged in 2013 think. Just go back to zoots twitch channel chat, as theres other hypocrites who love to moralize with less then zero knowledge. Feel free to share your bullshit in there.

hey I said bath salts, not zoot.
anyway thanks for the summary, I clearly wouldn't know any of that since I'm a retard who regged in 2013. you really called me out there. that cut deep, man. :(
I agree with most of what you said, I suppose you didn't mean to counter any of the points I brought up, since you didn't.
not sure where you got the idea that I would like to read cypher's diary, I said that it would be nice if he gave a basic statement at all, don't you think so? of course he doesn't have to and can do whatever he pleases, but it leaves a stale taste with how things happened.
I used to think highly of cypher as well and I'm sure he's actually a nice guy, but as already elaborated there wasn't much to be impressed with lately. believe it or not, it's actually possible to not be insulting your opponent whenever things don't go your way, even if you're frustrated and umotivated or whatever. if that's his way of dealing with it then that 's weak in my book, and that's all I was saying. I'll always admire players like k1llsen or rapha who can actually manage to show some good sportsmanship and keep their shit together upon losing. it seems to be a rare quality.
and of course it doesn't matter what I or anyone here thinks, neither does your wall of praise.

..looks like people get upset when you criticise their heroes, huh

SK Gaming: Looking through Quake history one sees that a number of the all time great duel players reached their first major final at a young age. You, United States of America ZeRo4,Poland av3k and Russia Cooller all managed the feat at only 16 years old. The pattern from then on seems to be that despite success early on, and possessing the skill to win, that there comes a period of time when these players drop off and need to find a way to revitalise themselves. What is your perspective on these observations?

Cypher: I think it's simple. All of these players you mentioned truly loved Quake. We wanted to improve our game so much, we were living with this thoughts about the game like a madness. You know it's hard to hold your head and motivation in the same line, there's always something happening in your real life that doesn't allow you to think only about Quake. That happened to most of us since as we started to get older we had bigger responsibilites. It's a pity esports is not really big, so we must think about our future in a different type of life. We understand that we won't play forever, and we won't have the same money when we will finish playing as we did back then. So people must understand that if their favourite player doesn't play well it means that something doesn't allow him to. This something is called real life.

it's funny how back in the late 90s and early 00s when players say they were quitting (thresh, rix, immortal, blue lakerman) they really did end up quitting whereas nowadays some may leave for a few months or around a year then come back.

I wonder why this is the case?
