Unfortunate name

I have strong mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand, FPS genra is extremely hardcore and underground, and a game like this, with the proper development mind and gameplay simplifications, may introduce masses to this type of games, which could be a good thing in the long run.

On the other hand, I just feel any excitement about this game is precluded to me, and to anyone who loves Quake. It's like being a mozart cultist being force to listen to justin bieber.

I understand that as pro today, one has to go where the money is, and I hope they will at least bring a bit of their quake experience to the game and try to make it shine as much as possible. Still it leaves a sour taste. To make a cheesy joke, one can play bieber mozard style (wtf), but it won't ever be a true mozart. Kind of sad.

Don't take my post as if I'm all negative. The more I read the more I have a profound respect for the developers.

The whole "create your game and share it" is a great concept. What I saw from the map editor was very exciting, as it appeared anyone could create a map in half an hour. If the sharing part is designed as well, and if the tools to act on the gameplay allows to really turn things around at will, then we could be in front of a revolutionary product. But...

There are a few things I want to see before rising expectations too much:

1. Every time you create a CAD system, you deal with the trade-off between simplicity of the interaction and creative freedom, which has repercussions on the quality / usability of the result. For example, map making in quake is horribly complex, time consuming and cumbersome, but it gives you a lot of freedom. The Start a Match feature in QL allows you to change a lot of things with a few simple clicks, but you still won't be able to implement a soccer game out of it.

2. Freedom can be good or bad. It could be that the great freedom of Quake map editors is what makes map making so elitist. It could be that a "tile-based map editor" is the smartest solution on earth. Or it could be that creating interesting maps is just not feasible, as the system is too constrained. I don't know.

3. Customization is a nice word, but there are tons of practical open questions. Will people be able to create new tiles, defining their gameplay properties? Will the dev provide enough premade tiles to make interesting maps? Will there be a scripting language? How do I define winning conditions? Will there be a fancy CAD system for the gameplay too? I could go on forever but you see the point. If some of the core gameplay mechanics are fixed, it could simply be impossible to bring the game to a level Quakers will like.

So, for now it is hard to judge. The videos I saw showed a pretty boring game, but the true value of this product will be in the tools and sharing of community content.

I will definitely buy it and play around with the tools they give. I want to see first hand to what extent "we are given full control".

I remember playing football (you meant football didn't you?) without any mods in jk2 (q3 engine).
There is no kicking in ql but with huge knocback on gauntlet, lowered friction and designated player as ball you should be good to go =)

There is a scripting language, basically all you have in TM² and what Nadeo call Maniaplanet.

I asked about it a while ago and Florent (Hylis) told me that they would probably not allow to change the gameplay (i had in mind to do a 'Quake Like' mod i.e add some stafe jumps and items to the game). Perhaps did they changed their mind since this time.

Because i played a lot of Trackamania and i love the community of this game. For me Quake is the perfect game gameplay wise, but playing a duel end 1 out of 5 by one insulting the other. I never saw such things in trackamania.

I also like how the dev handle the community, involving it a lot in the game. I had friends that made an official trailer, other who were just player and know are working with the Nadeo team.

And lot of tools are very fun and esay to use, to create (maps / skin / movies wathever) and exchange with the community. This is laking in Quake imo.

Wouldn't you like to have something to make your movies inside the game, change you gun skin or model, a ladder, etc in Quake?

In trackamania there is a system to upload replay of the best times, which allow every other player to download and see it. Imagine this adapted to the fps, so you wouldn't have to ask for demos, you would already have them ready to download.

I get your point about community, but don't think you can compare a racing community with a FPS. I think you'll get the same insulting as in quake, as i guess alot of the players for your mod will be old quakers? :D I've never played that much racing games, but wouldnt think its as intence as an FPS duel?

But maybe its just me? :) I played quake since 1998 and like the game how it is. Im not playing for the pricemoney or a big community, but for fun and because theres just nothing like it :)

Don't get me wrong, i love quake and play it (like a noob but still) since about 10 years. I will always play quake as i love it.

I just want to support Nadeo, perhaps because i'm french, and because i like how the devs handle the community. Making a mod is just to have fun programming (or scipting in this case) nothing more. And since for me quake is the perfect FPS gameplay wise, i though it would be fun to brought some aspect of it to another game. That's would have not been made to put quakers to another game but only for the fun of makin a mod and trying the tools given to the players.

About the spirit of the game you're probably true, but i hope it won't be as insulting as quake. And yes, we can't compare a race game with a duel FPS, that's just not the same intensity.

Anyway as i said earlier, i think it won't be possible to make a mod like that, so it's probably a fail project =)

Holy shit what a fantastic tournament system! Now I'm only disappoint that id did not implement such systems/ladders for QL.

I have no idea about gameplay/movement/weaponhandling of this game, still I feel like I want to play it very competitively. Strange.

u really expect us to take that review seriously? it reads like a marketing article written by someone in the hope that the reader knows absolutely nothing about competitive fps (maybe i should say deathmatch) gaming. chock full of catchphrases with no real content to it other than repeating the same old - o its completely customizable, what more can a competitive scene ask for? (Quite a fucking lot actually thx for asking).

I enjoy playing 1v1 on it a lot yes. It reminds me back in the day on Phrantic on which you can just mindlessly play and just let your skill express itself because phrantic was small and simplistic (well, that was still quake, and you still have items but you could not time those and still be effective).
I don't know how it will be perceived by the others but it is good fun for me.

They have made changes to the Elite mode (the 3v3 gametype) that is a dealbreaker for me though.

I'm not allowed to really talk about it yet I think so I won't be more specific, sorry.

I'm excited to see how the game feels/plays. I loved what they did with TrackMania I hope they can do something nice with a FPS title. We'll see how it goes...

I understood the principles used in Trackmania and transposed to a FPS, but for example the way of handling weapons sounds extremely negative to me.

The only reason I'm even remotely interested is because I had fun playing Trackmania and there's a small chance that if this is successful, maybe other FPS's like Quake could ride off that success. Otherwise I really don't care about this game

The human factor can spawn interest regardless of the actual game. Winners and losers, emotions and drama, cheering for one side or the other... You can do it with pretty much anything underneath.

I disagree. I think it does for QL exactly as for any other game, with the difference that Quake has also some good stuff to offer as far as gameplay and action go.

If you think of it, we have our heros, with foes and friends, we have the drama, and we actually thrive for more, wishing for new blood to come and play "rising hero" tale.

I think it's not very ethical from SM management to buy out some of the top quake players right from one of the most awaited QL events, especially when there are so few events that we can enjoy.

i think they don't give a fuck and try to do what's best for their game.
