Excello Warsow Anniversary Cup (68 comments)

This Sunday, Excello will be hosting their fifth WarSow duel cup! This time around is special however - two years ago, the first ever Excello WarSow duel cup was held. The cup was a massive success, with the gaming superstar

Sander Vo0 Kaasjager claiming first place - fighting off a torrid amount of new players.

Signups are open to everyone!

Excello wSw Cups History (1st/2nd)

If you�re a Warsow veteran or a player looking for a bit of fun, all you need is the latest version of Warsow (0.42 is available at official Warsow homepage), an account on teamexcello.com, and a finger to click and sign up!

The rules:
- The cup starts on Sunday 22 June, 18 CET, and it will be finished the same day
- Single elimination bracket system
- Best of three (BO3) format
- Timelimit of 10 minutes
- Players must check-in 10 minutes before the tournament starts

Map pool:
wdm3, wdm5, wdm6, wdm10a, wdm15

The best of the action from the cup will be shown on WarSowTV provided by the ever helpful

dendrofil - and take your fingers out of your ears and cross them! We hope to get the voice of Warsow itself, QuadV A_Spec, to cast the later stages! Make sure you tune in!

i wasn't thinking about map pool for a very long time. for me that is simple - only official maps should be used in bigger cups (it's always to decide between dm3 and dm14. i like both maps, dm14 is my favourite map overall, but i decided to put dm3)

using acidwdm2 is pointless. it WON't be included in basewsw in 0.5. still, 36dm2_b1 is an interesting map and can be promoted, because it MAY be an official wSw map in next releases

But larger tourneys have used maps not from the games offical maps, so why can't warsow it's a very simple and quick download.

ah and another thing - acidwdm2 is fucked up in 0.4. scaling and new weapon balance (very strong pg, rl) make playing on it just pathetic

ah and i forgot about one thing - warsow has many (enough) good, official maps. no need for custom. also, on 0.3 wdm2 wasn't as popular as it used to be (because of a few new maps), just look at EC

i love ye vic, but no. it's established that most active duellers would want acidwdm2 in the map pool. the scaling is fine. the rl is weaker than it was in 0.3, it was the most active map in 0.3. has the pg changed!?
and yeh, warsow has plenty of good maps- but many prefer acidwdm2 to the others. the five maps should be what are seen by the active duel community as the five best maps. and wdm2 was by far and away THE most popular duel map in 0.3, no question (and no not just for me the 'wdm2 only' player.
all these things aside just about the ongoing 'acidwdm2 ftw' thing, well done mate with organising the cup and i hope it's a big success- it deserves to be! :)

well, you can have your own opinion and i respect that. i don't really care about "most active duellers" (which means ten?) opinion, it's not any invite cup
(btw - EC XVI playoffs stats: wdm3 x 1, wdm2 x 3, wdm5 x 3, wtest15 x 3, wdm14 x 5 :p)

and i don't call you "wdm2 only player" (you are better @ wdm5 anyway) but you can't deny that there is actually a group of players who are/were good only on one map...

well whole discussion is pointless. i got my opinion, each player has his own opinion. i won't convince me, i won't convince you :)

im only better at dm5 now cos people refuse to use acidwdm2 in cups and hence people dont play it! :D i used to rock at dm2 :(
and obviously there are more than 10 active duellers, even if the community is small- it's not THAT small. i mean it doesn't look like you'll have a problem getting 64 signups for a cup that is offering bits of plastics as prizes (altho plastic is better than nothing :>)
and you should care about what the majority wants! whats the point otherwise? i mean a far out example, but cpl chose shit games no one wanted- look how that did! a weak parallel yeh but first that came to mind.
and c'mon, you can't take one EC playoffs as a fair representation

I hardly think this is the right cup for beginners to play in? If you mean for beginners to spectate then ok, but they still need to download warsow to use wswTV, and I really don't know how many would do that out of the blue to watch this cup unless they already had/knew about Warsow. Besides, aciddm2 is a 2.26mb autodownload from a server...

I'm not asking you to change your decision because that's yours to make and actually it's not a huge issue in the grand scheme of things, I just don't find the logic behind your arguments convincing.

availability of custom maps on 'public' servers is very poor.

and another thing - mapper's support isn't warranted. what do i mean? official wsw maps can modified when it's needed. many player thinks that acid's scale is fucked up in 0.4 and we can't expect fixed version...

erm... ok, i will sum up everything i wrote before, and i don't have more to say about that
1. this map is no longer supported
2. its scale sucks and it doesn't fit current warsow gameplay
3. it's not available on all servers

sorry if i can't give you rewarding answer (maybe i understood your question wrong), i can't make up my mind and express myself :D i will try to do it better when i wake up : ) (to be clear about dm2 - i think that this map is really good, it's one of the maps i am the best at, but it was MUCH more playable in previous versions of wSw, 0.1-0.3, i find it very boring on 0.4 :[ )

You're using its file name as the determining factor, which is what I've questioned this whole time.

points 2 and 3 are reasonable. I agree the map is not up to par with the others.

Generally, I think it's ideal to use maps that offer the best and most unique gameplay which is determined through community feedback. If map pools are decided by whether or not the warsow developers decide to put a 'w' in front of the filename, the community can get jipped out of some good maps. I hope this doesn't happen with 36dm2_b1 or any future maps...

We actually intend to create comunity map packs to be downloaded with the game to guarantee the presence of some custom maps in servers, and acidwdm2 is one of our first targets for it.

Funny thing is I created such a pack for Warsow (warsownews.net mappack v1) a long time ago and there was nearly no support from Warsow dev side when it was released. Now you do the same because you have recently noticed that there are a lot of good and productive mappers in the community needing a platform bigger than a thread somewhere in the depths of the forums? :(

it's only about map status - official (included in each copy of wsw) or unofficial (custom). that's all :)

If you noticed vanilla .42 warsow's map selection all have a 'w' in front of it. I was using this as a metaphor for it being 'official' this whole time....

I would like to have gone to dreamhack but I wasn't playing anything really, and I doubt EG would have covered the expenses :P

It's not about the filename, it's about it being included in Warsow or not. If it's not, it means people have to get it. Which is not a huge problem, but it is a kind of a extra step.

Anyway I support vicek in this case. There's enough proper maps to go round, and if it means less hassle with downloading custom maps, yay. acidwdm2 can be missed.

i was able to do just fine in cal without +back and eb. i played aggressive rocket/riotgun tactics.. i guess the eb was overused in .12 (certainly by players like habib <3) but your posts way over exaggerate it

oh yea, thats that game thats known as the "super fast paced fps game"... yet however to actually kill someone requires one to go go on quite the elaborate mission involving 30 ammo packs and 50 laps around the map to actually put enough damage into the enemy to actually kill them, although 10 minutes of constant spamming might sound viable in a duel game, it just isnt so when the guy is running so close to you that you arnt actually missing either... and then you have players like vicek who cry because a map actually allows someone to die a little quicker than on the others where you can run away for the whole game and not worry about an overpowered weapon...

not that i have anything against warsow, the devs have done a good job in producing a solid game, however, they kinda ruined it since 0.12 or something, whenever i first tried it anyway.

think before you post. i started playing 0.4 2-3 weeks ago (and it was released 5-6 months ago) and i wrote many times (on forums) that i don't like it because of ultra +back availability (everything because of new movement)

0.12? ye, great, players were available to play eb-only

ah and somehow most of the good players manage to get big scores on 0.4

nvc, i simply think its cos your not very good at the game. Its not all massive +back EB sniping like in 0.12 or with a mega high dps LG either. Now you actually have to play clever, use all the weapons and all the possibilities that warsow's movement offers etc.

I remember how you played back in the 0.12 days nvc: you would just camp lower on wdm2 and snipe with your EB, and now cos weve actually balanced the other guns into the equation a little bit more, it becomes impossible for you to kill someone, but rather than blame yourself, its the games fault.

why dont you try what all the other players have done and adapt, rather than hope that the game will somehow naturally play to your strengths.

you're right, its just because i havn't adapted to it... but i also never said it was a bad game, just that i dont enjoy this gamestyle... which is why i cba to adapt to it because aim is not nearly as important as anything else

just because they reduce eb damage, doesnt mean they have to nerf everything else

my point is that:

warsow = fast
guns = weak and useless

i have no obligations with the eb damage... but just because they lower eb damage, doesnt mean they should make every other gun in the game underpowered

well maybe new armor system will fix it (look, strong pg and lg aren't weak, rl was 100 iirc in 0.3 and ppl didn't like it; i think that weapons are strong but close fights are too "random" now). also from that point of view, new movement was a bad idea.

some weapon tweaks are also needed, no doubt (i found new gl idea as quite interestinig but atm ppl hardly use gl...). but also, as law mentioned, atm players have to use some 'tactic' (sneak and surprise escaping opponent). though some things are bad, someone is running away, he gets an eb shot and he gets even more speed

yes thats the only problem i have with the game, the random close fights that seem to be caused by the weapons being underpowered, from distance, this doesnt matter so much because you are always waiting to fight close... then when you do... its too random - i hope that 0.5 will fix it

there arent that many random close fights, as they tend to be unproductive for both players. As i said nvc, with u, its simply an l2p issue. you dont have to go in close, its just that you dont know how to play the situation properly. Also, the weapons havent been nerfed that badly, and consider the fact that more damage goes through the armours now. Simply nvc, warsow isnt like vq3, where u can hit 2-3 rails and win/get a frag. l2p nvc.

i dunno how much action they get, but warsow's netcode is pretty smooth and the game is very playable upto pings of 125 or so. (pings appear a bit bigger than the really are in the scoreboard) If the action is elsewhere shouldnt have a problem playing on any other european servers.
