Not really... According to both dictionary.com (which arguably is more US than UK) AND the Oxford English Dictionary, you can use both "pants" and "trousers" to describe what you call trousers. Pants has a secundary meaning of underpants/panties, but I guess they wouldn't have the word "underpants" if "pants" already had that meaning, wouldn't you agree? ;)

Edit: just like I wouldn't trust the majority of Dutch people to know the exact meanings of Dutch words. Comes with the law school attitude I guess, where it actually matters what a word means, unlike cases like this where it's just pants or underpants.

well, as an English person, you could probably use a bit of a refresher from the "origional" Oxford English Dictionary; I know "your not" quite ready to handle that, though.

Just a small observation: Dictionaries are actually reverse reference books. Math books, Physics books, are forward reference books, in the sense that they define what math, physics are. A math book will have an addition table, and you can point at it and say "there, that is why 2+2=4"

However, dictionaries are actually the opposite. They are collections of the meanings of words that are current at the time of the dictionary's composition. They are at best historical records. You can compare dictionaries from different times to see this. If you compare different math books, the old one will necessarily be more wrong, but a dictionary is not wrong just because it is old -- it simply describes an older vocabulary (such as the one you would need to understand Shakespear for example)

The point being, a dictionary will never be more authorative than the current speakers of a language. Language evolves, but a dictionary is fixed in the past.

As the OED is a historical dictionary, its entry structure is very different from that of a dictionary of current English, in which only present-day senses are covered, and in which the most common meanings or senses are described first.
