I want to play with my friends at a local gaming club like I used to do back in the good Q3 days, not at some gay tournaments far away.

Tard. Doesn't disprove what I was trying to say: There is no way to play Quake with your friends at a local gaming club. 99% of people who play is not going to care enough to play some online qualifiers, then, in the rare case you qualify, fly at some foreing place to get owned by the same people.

Most people just want to be able to play with no ping, at your local area, with your friends. Maybe do some for-fun tournaments there, nothing more. This was key in the golden Q3 days. Being able to play in front of people, having that "live" feel instead of playing in your room, without the need of going that fucking far.

Currently you CAN'T do that because id can't be arsed to add LAN support to QL.

Not that I don't want to be able to run LAN servers in QL, but you have to be realistic. Not "most" or any significant part of QL audience cares about it. You are tiny minority and id software won't listen to you and if all people who want LAN server stop playing QL, id won't even notice. So go and play a game that allows you to play how you want to instead of beating your head against a wall.

Due to quitting users, the minority is quickly becoming the majority.

Would be nice to see QL on the circuit but i think the community/viewer/fanbase is too small that MLG would drop it after a few tourneys. Afterall they dropped WoW which had a much higher viewer count than any QL tourney.

They dropped WoW because the new expansion Cataclysm (4.x.x) KILLED arenas, they don't function at all, and it's probably going to be broken for a while.

Basically, it's the equivalent of QL doing an update that removes the server browser and you can't play anything except single player.

I haven't heard that they don't function, but merely that they added the new stat/talent changes for cataclysm early (as they do before every expansion) which totally breaks the balance (not that there really was balance in WOTLK) at the current level/gear.

It's not exactly a small viewerbase. Got 900ish viewers on the Cypher marathon earlier this week right? That wasn't even a major tourney (or well, it kinda was, but qualifiers)

Most Console gamers perceive PC gaming as having to spend £1,000+ then having to update it every 2 weeks so you can play the latest games on max settings so when they check the alienware website (because they sponsor the tournament and all console gamers think ALINEWARE IZ TEH BESTZ!) and the prices correct their perception of PC gaming, they will go back on their 360's again thinking their pro because they're pub heroes against some people who are just playing for the lolz.

I have a 1,3 years old thinkpad notebook from lenovo, core duo, because of intel gma shit graphics chip with shared memory I can neither play starcraft 2 nor could I play quake live on a competetive level.The average joes mostly own notebooks nowadays, stationary pc's are mostly old system in normal households now ... and it's only since the last 6 months normal notebooks begin to have graphicchips from nvidia or ati ... so average joe has to buy a new pc for at least 600 $ to be able to play starcraft 2 or Quake Live ...

I think the real problem is that a comp can run q4 cranked up to 11 in 1360*whatever yet struggle to keep above 120fps ON FUCKING DM6 since the game got out of beta. That's def. not gonna help newcomers.

New Comers want to play the game fluently (> 30 fps) with nice graphics on their pc ... that's all they want ... not possible with my core duo processor (probably I could run Q3A in 1024 x 768 > 30 fps and above 120 fps on 800 x 600 with low graphic settings) ... I think with everything set to ultra low and 640 x 480 resolution I get something between 40 - 50 fps ... and I really haven't measured it in onlineplay

Pretty much what I meant. On both machine I've seen this ( mine and a friend's über computer ), capping the fps at 60 didn't change anything, neither did 30fps ( yeah, I tried thirty ). Same shit happens wether I use my cfg or high quality settings.

I have 2 years old notebook with standard intel graphics and it can run QL pretty well, on most maps you can get pretty stable 125 fps, on some of them, something like 90-100.
It's actually very strange that QL runs so slow, because it's based on 10 years old game that was designed to run on 10 years old graphics which was like 10 times slower than even current low-end from Intel. Actually, Q3A on my notebook never ever drops below 125fps even at max settings and max resolution.

It's not anyone's fault but intel. It's not as if only quake has the problem - that card can't run anything on the hl2 engine, opengl, whatever.

I can't get solid 125 on any map on an oc'd 2.6ghz phenom with a x850, get the exact same resuls from 640 to 1024.
Drop down to 80 on the ctf map with snow and one of the newer big ca ones.

edit : Basically, the game behaves worse than it used to do more than a year ago on my dual core 2ghz+ shitty intel chipset laptop.

oh well, I didn't buy that notebook for gaming, also at that time onboard-chipsets from ATI or Nvidia were quite rare.
For newer games I currently have a XBox 360, but atm I don't do anything with it. Anyway I don't think I would really play starcraft 2, or maybe I would play it, but I didn't like its predecessor, only played 3 levels on it, and Warcraft 3 was also not that much to my liking, although I played it through ... so I think starcraft 2 won't be really my thing either ...
and the notebook is probably still good enough to get in the top 10 % in QL ... anyway I probably would still outaim most QLers with my ballmouse from 99 ... the hardware is sufficient to get to a good level, and after having achieved a good level I could buy myself another system ... but atm no time to play quake and build up any skill in that game ... currently I am focused on my degree ... but even if the degree wasn't there I think I would spend my energy on something else than quake ... I've been very good in Q2 once, the energy and effort to get to this level again would be tremendous, I am not sure if I can do that again, I am not anymore 14/15 and mainly think "I have to improve" and train everyday with a lot of concentration and energy ... I think it would be like the game chess, I play it frequently, but just for fun, I don't really put effort in it and I don't really want to improve in chess and so my level more or less stagnates although I regularly play the game ... when you do something you need to be really concentrated and need to have a lot of will to become better to finally improve ...
I am not sure if this love for Quake is still there ... and I've been there already ... the only aim to play QL again would be to aim to get to the real top ... I am not sure, some players are just better, immortal from Q2 had such a great aim with the rail, I don't know if I could ever achieve such an aim, some people are just born geniuses, or let's say quake geniuses ... these geniuses exist also in chess, they are already international masters with 14 ... and anyway who cares for your virtual successes in real life ... noone ... I spend my life on more real things now, try to do sport or play an instrument whatever, I search my competition there, not anymore in games, I still play games for fun though, but in multiplayergames there is always a competetive aspect that is very demanding, I am not sure if I still want to spend so much energy on a multiplayer game ... and quake is also very time intensive ... and once you're on a good level it is also not easy to find trainingpartners ... or when I remember clanwars of 2 x 20 Min, that could be done in 45-50 minutes ... they always lasted like 3 hours until all the people were there and readied up ... I don't want this anymore I guess or let's say I can't anymore do this ... but yeah, when I have time again I will try to play some QL, try to get into it a bit, play some ffa/1on1 for fun ... see what's it like for nostalgic quake reasons and then move on ...

Would be so awesome if MLG picked it up. 1v1 is a must. TDM would be awesome but to be honest, most TDM teams just don't have funding/sponsorship to go to these events. If TDM was added (which would be awesome) then hopefully some TDM teams would be picked up by big-name teams.

On the subject of PC gamers vs Consolers. I don't think any consolers particularly shy away from PC titles because they believe they need to invest in a PC, I just think that the big companies are a victim of their high-end gear. If it was made apparent to console gamers that you only need a PC the same price as a console (of which lets face it, most console gamers already have for their social shit like facebook/twitter/whatever) to play QuakeLive, then they'd be more inclined to play it.

I've got plenty of console mates that don't play QuakeLive (or PC games at all) primarily because of the social aspect, laid back arm-chair gaming and relaxed approach of console gaming. MLG I would safety say looks towards the competitive aspect of console gaming rather then relaxing gaming, so to say that QuakeLive wouldn't fit in as a highly competitive title would be silly.

That plus I've shown mates of mine who don't play games matches like THIS and they have immediately replied "holy shit that's awesome!" and have asked me to point out whenever there's a new live tournament coming up. Whatever way you look at it, big LAN QuakeLive duels is tense shit that's awesome to watch (and even more awesome when you've got cameras on the players whilst they play - like MLG do - so you can see their reaction, frustration and excitement)


That's just my 50cents anyway. QuakeLive has the potential to become one of the biggest competitive games around. All it needs is activity, and you're not gonna get activity until their are lots of advertised tournaments, and you're not gonna get lots of sponsored tournaments without many features that QuakeLive are currently lacking (LAN etc. GTV honestly isn't too much of a loss since I tend to watch a stream with commentary over GTV nowadays anyway even if there's the option - well, the quality of the stream has to at least be decent)

Depends really. I came to Quake from watching tournaments as did most of my mates, and without those events I doubt we would be playing it now.

Yeah I probably would have if I had seen them. When I go to Youtube and watch old Quakecons or whatever with older Quake titles I install them just to bum around them to try out. If there was an active scene with lots of servers (like QL has) then I would have been more inclined to stay.

Quake 4 had a full advertising campaign, including prime-time television ads, and it still didn't manage to hit the minimum milestone of 1 million copies sold.

Right now, in pretty much the most inactive time of day, on teamliquid there are 24 running live streams showing just random Starcraft stuff (there isn't even any tournament or anything going on), and they have 2000+ viewers combined.

Not surprising - TL alone brings in more hits than all of QL, and it's just a forum. Don't forget the GSL bringing in 800k viewers. =P

Hell yes. More real games where the money is on these circuits is a necessity. Starcraft is a start, but id will have to do more work than Blizzard did in order to encourage them to take up QL.

In reality though it will come down to the community to prove that the interest (and therefore capital) is still there.

Some trackmania nf servers had an in-game jukebox. It was beyond awesome and obviously way better than just mp3 player support

I don't mind being placed 5000 or something. I actually prefer it, than the current no life awards of the leaderboard.

Also, do something with the skillrating. It is extremely sensitive. One day I was skill 40 and the next day after just 1 hour of play went to skill 1. True story and has happened more than once. Maybe that answers the absence of a real ladder. Since, the way QL measures the skill now, you could be one day No 300 in the ladder and next day 30000.
