The benefit of using gold over other connector metals such as tin in these applications is highly debated. Gold connectors are often criticized by audio-visual experts as unnecessary for most consumers and seen as simply a marketing ploy.

USB protocol is digital, you don't need to provide connection with sick linearity as in high end hi-fi systems. so, if you use plating, it may just help you at reducing power dissipation.

standard 1.8A USB peripherals don't need ANY plating (as specified here) for working within their specification.
i estimate that an USB mouse (with "christhmas tree" leds) would require no more than 200mA, way much lower than the nominal value.

so, gold plating is there just to pretend it's a quality product, since standard tin/nickel plating is much cheaper and does the job anyway.

tl;dr USB is a digital protocol, mice don't require much power -> gold plating is not needed.
