Play 3.5 hours a day, 5 days a week, that's $4800 a month adding rakeback of ca. $1500 we're up to $6300 a month. More money than most people will ever make on a monthly basis, playing only 3.5 hours 5 days a week.

Most of the time a comment is in disregard to skill or no skill. It's a courtesy comment, such as gg when it wasn't really a good game. If someone makes a great call then you say nice call rather than nice hand. NH is just trying to keep a friendly atmosphere and it helps some people not lose their temper by saying it, like "oh well, nice hand" even if the opponent butchered it.

i try to never talk to the opponents at the table. i usually dont have the chat on. i bitch on msn and irc instead :)

Personally I don't say NH online, maybe if I'm playing against some 70 year old grandmother (which I have on some occassions). Also if I get "owned" at home I can generally yell out a short tirade of swear words, whereas it would be unacceptable behaviour in a live game :)
If i'm playing in a live game like a casino or cardclub then I try to be nice. Better to be on someones good side, helps you focus when you have someone to talk to. Also if people at the table like you then thats more expected value right there cause it's bound to effect the way they play their hands.

playing the cards properly is skill. not gettin them.

learn all there is to learn (probabilities etc.), and once youve got it commited, dont think about it and just play the game. i dont play online that often though, ive played with play money and made money but im sure its different with real money. i play with friends and at cardrooms sometimes.

I find they fill up to slow for my taste and there's more to keep track of(as in I dont get a good overview compared to the single tables) which i dont like when i multitable. Also the more players and steeper payout structure(30% get paid in the stts) the more variance you will get. I dont doubt they're very juicy though, even more so than the stt's, i just like the one table structures more :)

regarding "stakes" its hard to find a way to compare. the best would probably be to judge by the bankroll required(or perhaps your winrate, dunno really but i prefer bankroll since it shows where I can play without having to worry too much about going broke) to play at a certain limit(which is measured by you winrate and standard deviance). If you'd assume that 500BB for sh limit, 3000bb for NL and 50 buyins for STT's would have about the same risk of ruin then playing 50+5 stt's would be similar in stakes to playing 3/6 SH limit or 0.5/1 NL imo. :-)
Anyway in my opinion the main thing going for sngs is that the variance/downswings/losingstreaks whatever doesnt get to your head as theyre not NEARLY as bad as they are in other forms of poker(with SH limit along with big MTT's being pretty much the most swingy forms you can play). Also if you're a sucker for going on tilt like me the decisions are usually more clear cut and when they arent, its usually close anyway. And its easy to multitable too, when you play your usual sh limit tables you play alot of hands and decisions are hard cause you usually have to play weak stuff like bottom pair with an overcard and a backdoor flush, ace high hands and stuff but post-flop play in sng's are more straightforward since theyre isnt much room to maneuver with your stack usually being low compared to the blinds etc.

Anyway i know how -200bb in 3/6 limit feels and you'll get through it :)

and btw im not saying you should start playing stt's or anything just that theyre a nice change of pace when things arent going your way in the sh limit games which youre obviously quite good at :-)

I havent got any real experience with poker on the internet (except bunnypoker ;D) but I sometime play offline with my friends on the late friday evenings. Usually winner takes it all with 400-500dkr in the pot and since we're friends the winner always buys the rest some rounds of beer down at the pub :).

you are stupid..there are lots of math and statistic involved in the game, as well as the psycological aspect. You dont know what cards the other players have, but good players can guess it fairly accurate by the way they play and the bets they make, their chipcount and the position they are in. Your position at the tables means lots, if you are next to small, big blind or under the gun you have a nice disadvantage as you have to act before everyone else and dont know how many bets you are possibly going to face. Sitting on the button is the exact opposite, because you are the last guy to act. The size of your chips can also decide the game, because then you can bully the other players with high bets. Knowing when to fold and being able to calculate the odds, for you to get the card you need and learn how to calculate the potodds also means a lot in the long run. It's small things combined and the way you use them, that makes you a good player.

In Texas hold'em, we can make assumptions that allow us to calculate our odds of drawing a card to make a winning hand. Let's assume you hold Jh-Th in a 6-way pot. Many players love J-T suited because of the large number of straights and flushes it can make.

You see the flop of: Ac Kh 3h

To figure out the odds of making your hand on the next card (the turn) you first need to count your outs -- the number of cards that will help you. How many outs do you have? Assume that with 6 total players in the pot, at least one player has an ace or a king, so you're not drawing to a jack or a ten, which would give you a smaller pair. Also assume that if you hit your flush, you will have a winning hand -- no one else will have a higher flush. Although these assumptions will not always be correct, you must make some guesses in order to calculate you odds.

So, there are 9 hearts which will make the flush and 4 queens will make the straight. One of the queens is also a heart, so we need to be careful not to double count it: 9 hearts + 3 non-heart queens = 12 outs.

Now, you know your 2 cards, and the 3 cards on the board, so there are 47 unknown cards. Of those 47 cards, there are 12 "good" cards, and 35 "bad" cards, which makes a ratio of bad to good cards of 35 to 12, or just about 3 to 1. So, you want a risk-reward ratio to be at least 3 to 1 in order to call a flop bet.

This risk-reward ratio (which is really a reward-risk ratio -- the amount of reward you will get compared to the risk you are taking) is your POT ODDS. It is the ratio of the amount of money in the pot to the amount you must call in order to be eligible to win the pot. In this example there is $30 in the pot. So, if the first player bets $5, and the next player raises to $10, we will still have a positive expected value if we call for $10, even if no other players call the raise. Why? By the time the pot gets to us, it contains $30 + $5 + $10 = $45. It costs us $10 to call, so the pot is laying us odds of $45 to $10, or 4 to 1. We know that we are only a 3-1 underdog, so we are being more than fairly compensated for the risk of seeing the turn card.

Continuing with this example, let's assume it's not our lucky day, and the turn card is the 2d. Now, we still have 12 outs, and there are now 34 unknown cards, so we are again about a 3-1 (it's actually 34 to 12, or 2.83 to 1) underdog to make our hand on the river. Since there is now $55 in the pot after we call the turn bet, it is again correct for us to call if our opponent bets $10 now, since our pot odds are 5 to 1.

Although we might not make our straight or flush here, if we consistently put ourselves in situations where we are making bets with the proper pot odds, we will show a long run positive expectation. We will be compensated enough on the occasions where we do make our hand that we can afford the losses on the times where we do not.

during the course of one hand holdem is VERY based on luck, i.e what cards fall on the board etc.

however during the course of hundreds of thousands of hands the pocket hands you and your opponents are dealt are about equal in terms of strength. and during the course of these hundreds of thousands of hands, if you play them more correct than your opponent (i.e raising on the streets you're ahead and calling/folding when you're drawing or behind) you will end up beating him/her.

even though you cannot see your opponents hands you should be able to understand from looseness, aggression, playing style, reads etc a range of hands he could have and play accordingly.

that's hold'em 101 for you.

I would advise people not to gamble on house games where long term odds are always against them. Actually I wouldnt directly advise someone unless they specifically asked me. I was then employed by the developers of the game work on the sequel from there, I went on to become a Designer and spent 5 years working exclusively on FPS games which sold about 15 million copies.
Since then I have taken a big interest in pro-gaming and have been waiting for a new game to play, becasue I have always competed at a competitive level and I have always played games at a high level and I'm confident I'm ready to play with a new game, even though I get raped in q3.

Gamers are largely made up of teenagers or young guys, that's when most people should be at uni or sorting out a job, not thinking they can get through life playing cards. For every successful card player I could show you a 100 failed ones who have probably lost their house/wife/kids etc.
Poker players talk about beating the odds, yet they place themselves in a very precarious position fileld with people who generally want to bluff and take each others money. That's why the smartest bet is (for most) to NOT PLAY as a profession.

thats true, most players(like the ones in this thread) are too illusional. Those who succeed have one thing in common and thats that they're brutally honest to themselves and i would say the overwhelming majority are way too optimistic. Playing as your sole source of income if you have kids, house etc. is stupid, period.

You lost 200 big bets in 3/6 5/10 shorthanded ?

shorthanded is pld a lot different than full ring games, but you surely know that already, you need to read some good literature on how to win at shorthanded, you cant just wait for your quality cards like in full ring games.

From what I've read here and there in forums you need to play more small pocket pairs (even raise them). Suited connectors and the likes go down in value, since its often heads up post-flop.

No limit ? no idea how to play that realy, i would imagine that pocket pairs are much more valuable and aggression is a much bigger factor than in fl. Again read a decent book.

no I'm not saying that you are a bad player because you lost 200 big bets. I meant that if you are a good experienced player you should know that those swings can happen, they are rare but they can happen.

A few weeks ago i had a great month, then got into a downswing (~$1500 playing 5/10, no biggie) + I was really tired of the game(playing 2k hands a day) so I stopped. Last week I started playing again and got fucked over by this horrible downswing. I just had to vent.

nolimit = you can bet how much you want and go allin etc.
fixed limit = if you are playing 5/10 you can only bet 5 before the flop and on the flop, and 10 on the turn and river.

I would say across the board I am still the most talented gamer.

If you know a quaker who can hang with me across trackmania/id shooters/street fighter (all tournament games) then I would gladly prove just how reliant some of you are on a very specific set of play mechanics/circumstances. Any fool can play a single game year in year out and do well. You want a medal?
