I only judge skill by results. It doesn't matter how they are produced (different tactics, aim, etc.). Skill is to get a good result. There may be a player that has a singular rail-skill in terms of accuracy, but if he cannot win games he's not too skilled.

i just don't see it that simple, not always the most skilled player wins. there is a lot of randomness, luck and god knows what involved in games.
if you consider an overall type of skill then what you said could be valid.

IMO randomness (= luck) is an attribute of the game. And if it exists it usually is equally distributed, i.e. both players can be lucky.

Nobody wins a game with 20:-1 by luck. But if he can there's a problem with the game itself (it's a "luck-game").

That might be a good way of measuring a game suitable for skilled playing syles: The influence of luck is small.

actually i thought about what you wrote and it made more sense. the first time i read it it just sounded something like "the most skilled always wins", which IMO is incorrect.

Hmm... skill is basically just hand-to-eye coordination and timing etc. Judgement is more important to me - doing the right thing at the right time.

I would define skill as the ability to execute... whether you're talking about aiming, jumps, movement in general... whatever. If you can execute the different elements of the game well, you are skilled.

Strategy, on the other hand, is more like your approach to the game. Whether you decide to camp RA, or camp YA and MH. Or if you decide to be aggressive or defensive.

Of course, the ability to execute strategic elements would somewhat fall into the skill category. The two really do blend together and when you break it all down, skill and strategy is really all there is to any particular thing (excluding luck).

As far as the most skillful game... it's hard to say. First of all, who has actually played every game out there? And played them all enough to truly make the critical distinction? Although, without a doubt, i'd have to say q3 is the most balanced game as far skill/strategy goes.

The most skillful thing you could do would be to execute everything perfectly. Every jump, every attack, every movement, every strategic move and every shot you fire. So basically, you do everything you intend to do, and you do it without making any mistakes or faltering in any way. And, you never do things you don't intend to do.

Quite unspecific question, skill is skill and if you're not specific it counts for every area and the more skill in the areas the better of course. But since you ask what "ur" idea of skill is I assume it's some kind of "what do you think is the most important area when defining skill".

As someone mentioned, I can't say I've tried all the games out there and know everything about them, but from the most known ones I just have to stick with QW. Fast speed, good/skilled movement, good maps (IMO in case anyone argues it), different types of weapons - instant hit single fire (shotguns), instant hit tracking (lightning gun), predict tracking (nailguns), grenade launcher which stands responsible for many sick kills and finally the great fast rocket launcher - all these elements included in one game. Skill level is insane after all these years and it's still one of the fastest games (important the way I see it, hitting someone in a game requires skill and hitting someone where you and your opponent move 2-3 times faster is definately better).

Skill to me is winning aswell - every aspect of it. Not cheating or rediculous bug exploiting of course, but timing items and stacking up, knowing where your opponent is, moving well, aiming good and so on. The only thing I personally like more and can't really defend is that I rather watch someone like (taking Q3 as an example) TOXIC going aggressive with his aim (off topic: best ever? If not, name and demo-example of the superior player please!) than someone playing only to get every item on the map trying to enter combat only with the advantage. Now, like I said, I appreciate the latter aswell, but when you really see that a player is afraid of the other guys aim and in-fight abilities and have to constantly, constantly make up for it in other ways in a game that is about killing eachother, then I just get slightly... Can't really find the word for it in english, sorry. It's deathmatch, not survivematch :D

But as an example; if the fighting machine wins a game by say, 11-10, over a guy that was "camping" (I mean it in a strategical way) and running to get all megahealths and armours - then that was probably a cool game from his side and his raw fighting skills would be acknowledged. On the other hand, if the other guy won with 11-10, it would be more of an "only" 11-10 since he, running the armours and megahealths and stuff and holding the correct spots would be considered to have the map-control for most/all of the time and still only come out with one frags lead, being outaimed but got the extra frag possibly/probably due to the extra hits he could pack every fight.

Anyway yeah, that's just my view and I don't even know if it came out making any sense, but as I said I can't (for a good reason) really defend this as I myself can't deny there is more different skills on a higher level for the strategic player - and in the end win = win. I just dislike, quote, "no points awarded for style" :)

Going back to QW I just thought I'd post some of the demos that have inspired, formed and amazed me over and over again, quite a few of you have already seen them I guess but perhaps someone haven't and wants to. Please note that they are all 1v1's and against good/very good opponents (I do not know who ParadokS' opponent on end is and can't really judge him myself on that one demo either).

No points awarded for style? LocKtars (.se) lovely, unbreakable denial of this fact takes this game into overtime where he continues to play like an aggressive ballet-dancer. My personal QW favourite, extremely nice in person. Note: Picked this demo almost out of random, I've seen better but he has so many fantastic demos of this map... [dm2]

I think QW is a great FPS. I don't play it, but I would if it wasn't so many years old (meaning very hard to find other noobs to play against, and probably taking a year of intense playing to reach at least an acceptable skill level). It just is straight forward ownage with so powerful guns. When you screw up you are simply dead unlike i.e ut2k4 where you switch to a green shield when you've fucked up and you have a great shot at surviving with no particular skill needed! You really have to work here to play consistent and getting a score, it is obvious. Love the demos, + for you is the least I can do

Skill is movement/aim/tactics/timing as arachnoid already pointed out.

More interesting is the question where somebody places his priorities in gaming, what's the purpose, the reason you play, what keeps you at it, because there's more to gaming than skill. Skill is quite measureable, there is a ton of other things happening though that are not measureable, those are interesting, this skill-debate is just semantics imo. The best posts in this thread already talked about much more than skill itself.

Are those protein drinks useful? Do you use them over normal meals or as an addition? I ask this as I'm contemplating getting some to go with my training.

imo there are two groups of things that determine skill in duel, as it's easier saying duel than any other mode.

experience (psychology, smart desicion making)

aim/timing/tactics

Skill is owning a top class player while thinking about what you're gonna have for dinner later on.
