Fooze won Best Picture? Aw... Well, at least my fav (the aAa vid) won Best CS.

What is the award for 'best sound' supposed to be? Soundtrack? If so I think the fooze movie and Zulg should've been winners...

It's more about the use of additional audio like game sounds, commentary etc.. on which EC3 movie had a great job in.

About the musics.. you can't really discuss about them. For every cathegory there's like 4/5 of ppl who hate it and 1/5 who say it's the best kind of music there is.

Also how the movie was edited to fit the music I belive. The Badge 3.0 did a great job there, but so did EuroCup III (Q3 CS) :)

Neh.. The Badge 2/3 are great movies, but so is Fooze (UT).

If the badge movies had used real frags, I am sure they would have ended up higher. Of course if they had used real frags, the movies would have been much worse fragwise and ended up lower. Ye olde catch 22.

And at least for me, while the Badge movies are well done but the shadow of staged/slow motion frags looms all over it, meaning I am never impressed by anything. It only takes away from the experience, when the original intent I suppose was to get us to oh and ah over their superhuman frag skills.

It did won the best tech and deserve to. But editing and direction isn't only throwing flashy FX on the viewer. It it also about pace, how the music fits with the images and how the action is presented. The fooze movie was infinitely more inventive and original in this department.

It is Best Movie Award, not Best Frags Show... ;-)

all I remember from badge is wierd music, shiny weapons (was damn blinding ffs) and nice ending that looked like trickjumping from ff6. :p

I'm not a quaker and for me Badge 3.0 is still much, much better movie than Fooze. It is A MOVIE, not a simple presentation of the frags with funny sequences. As a former UT player I like Fooze, both (with Badge) have got my votes. Fooze is funny, but... i play as little quake as ut, so yes, my oppinion on this one is unbiased. i understand that fooze means a lot to certain ppl, since it was like the first watchable UT movie, but still it can't compete with the badge series (which evolved from years of quake-movies) in terms of editing and direction imo. i guess this is what happens when gamers judge editing and direction, you should have joined #adobe-premiere-gurus or something and pick 5 people who actually know something about editing and don't care whether the frags are staged or not. fooze...oh please.

Celebration of egos, I guess just like the games themselves. Fooze wasnt bad, but it was dated and other than using features of editing software, not that creative.

Travel was a one of a kind. Probably the last.

So the lesson? Celebrate your flagging egos in movies. FPS movies are just another way to fragging imortality.

You forgot to mention that Travel was very boring. After 2 minutes it had shown pretty much every single trick it had, and then kept repeating them for another 8 minutes.

Boring music * Sweeping freecam shot * Boring music * Airdisc ad nauseum. * Another song, but equally boring * 5 minutes of sweeping freecam shots from FFA servers.

And I do get the point of it. The guy was visiting previous battle grounds. That didn't make it any more interesting to watch. It wasn't bad, but not all that interesting.

I guess it appeals to the same people that found the movie Titanic "a majestic epic". I actually expected that Celine Dion song to be used for the end sequence, but it never did.:(

Liked the vehicle fights though, looked pretty good.

I would like to revise history a bit. Back when I made Gr8frags there were no other Q3 movies out to my knowledge . There aren't even any credits or anything . It was a test or demonstration movie . I wanted to show the "community" that gaming didn't have to be "our thing" and that we could reach out to non-gamers in a way they understand .My primary focus was to get the CPL (don't laugh) to promote themselvesthrough videos. These promotional videos , which would be match highlights etc. were to be included in the demo cd's of PCgamer and other magazines or onm there web site and/or other gaming web sites . That way you could maximize exposure of potential cash prizes to your core audience and maybe even lure ppl. away from other games :P. Anyway the CPL blew the idea off , becase regardless how much they tell you , they are not open to suggestions or criticisms. Back to the point .
Clipquake came around about a week later demonstrating the elegance and beauty of the engine and peeked alot of ppl. curiosity. There was a mad frenzy on how to make the movies and 50's Quiff stepped up made a guide and anwsered endless questions on these and other boards.
The movies have changes and evolved so much it's amazing.
Now ppl. are making movies for every game and showing incredible talent and ingenuity. To the point were there are actually awards!!!! Even FRAPS has a builtin avi maker!!
There is no telling were this willl end up but I just want to congratulate the winners , tell everyone to keep at it because who knows were this will end up considering it started from " Hey , I wonder what cl_avidemo does?"

Gr8frags was the first movie i downloaded (and saw) actually, kudos to you buddy. It was a great movie IMO =)

i remember doing quake 2 demos of frag clips with the q2 demo maker program, i dont remember seeing anything like it when i did those.

yeah there was a mad frenzy and for a while it seemed like the whole of quakenet was attempted movies. I'll try and upload a collection of the first few q3 movies ever tomorrow. Which I'm sorry to say show that enemyowned.avi predated yours by just over a month :) And as you say Clipquake following a week later on the same day as my short avi that first used those matrix effects :)

Can you remember any of the other original movies? I've still got Plague's q3 and cs highlights avi :) 'The Guild' by pArt knocked the socks off everything at the time too. Classic stuff.

Of course you have it :) never deleta a movie is my motto ;) so to speak. Got 627movies now. 46.2GB I'll delete them the day I die =)

One movie that I missed (which would have been hard to put in a category here) was a RtCW movie I saw of a clanwar with running commentary. While the movie in itself wasn't spectacular it was pretty nice to hear someone discuss strategy in depth to the moving pictures.

But it was more about it being a good idea, than the execution being really good, that made me like that one.

I think you are referring to the CAL-i final match between Doctors and Team Abuse. The commentary was provided by a|wiseguy AFAIK.

That was very interesting to watch, not only because of the great editing out of the non-essential parts, but also the informative commentary.

This video beats them all imo. great editing, insane frags, frags synced with chill music. now thats how you make a fps movie. fooze was well done, but its... ut :P. the fooze frags were good but not insanely impressive imo.

The Art of Q3 has terrible visual quality. It's choppy and only 320×240 pixels in size. The sound isn't compressed, it takes 17MB of the 37.2MB which the movie is. The frags are NOT insane, but mediocre IMO.

I don't. But still. Fooze (UT) is a goodbuy UT movie and it kinda is a presentation of the klan members and what they have achieved and at the same time it shows funny episodes etc. form their past playing UT. And does a very good job IMHO.

still trying to work out how fooze won so many awards,out of all the movies i've watched its ranks among the bottom. Maybe someone else could explain what was so good about it....

I thought it was dire. It makes one wonder if the judge(s) have even seen any of the classic q3 movies. I am also doubtful of their understanding of the term editing in a film context as though the presentation was slick, the montage in Fooze was uninspiring.

I'm sure Carmak hasn't seen 'Exclamation' by pArt or even Liquids impressive clan bio movie. Someone find somewhere I can upload all these real quake movies :)

I agree on liquids addiction movie which was AWSOME. One of my favorites. Can't understand how I could forget to mention it to Carmak :/ Cause it's one of the best. But Fooze is awsome as well, just another genre.

I haven't seen a Q3 movie that is even close to fooze (or some of the movies from other games for that matter). There are some ok Q3 movies.

The Bio movie had one gimmick (ie, it being a trip, so it was 7 minutes of changing filters) which I guess was clever but not clever enough to last it through a whole movie.

Exclamation had one look which is used for the whole movie, and that was about it. It is just one short segment (movie is only 4 mins) with that look. No change in pace or music. Not trying to tell us anything.

I suspect you aren't very interested in narrative, pacing, making sure the soundtrack fits with the action or indeed a movie having more than one distinct section, but are just looking for someone to use filters in a nice way. I really suggest you go look at The art of playing Quake3. The author manages to use more video effects and transition effects than what premiere offers as default.

For Q3 movies The badge 2 and 3 look the best but the action is suspect, and the movie with the best action (Gopher) looks pants. If someone actually managed to merge the two we might have a really good Q3 movie.

I really dig liquids movie. But I do think EuroCup III (Q3 CS) is a very good Q3 movie. Specially if you take into consideration how old it is compared to Fooze (UT).

I like Clipquake for the same reason. Shame there is less than 1 minute action in that one, otherwise I would have rated it much higher.

lol Fred :) Spare us your rudimentary understanding of film language and realise that q3 movies are ultimately an extremely limited medium that allows for little real expression. That said, it is possible with a little knowledge to create something worthy of the term 'montage' in the Vertov, rather than Eisenstein sense - which is next to impossible to apply to a gaming movie. Fooze does nothing of the sort and if you weren't such a stupid little (UT fanboy?) nonce you would realise this. The presentation was slick, the editing and action were very very poor. These aren't works of art Fred, they're bloody frag movies.

I still maintain FDE 1 is the finest example so far of how a good quake-movie should be. The Paradoks' rocket kill, then shaft with fade to the Dag pov twisting into the teleporter, in combination with the music is something of an apotheosis in terms of clever editing. Fooze in contrast was pathetic.

I can't understand how you can dislike it. Before I saw it I had never heard of Fooze as I've never been active in the UT community, but when I was done watching it, I felt sorry they were leaving.

my personal favourite was the_badge_3, it had personal style & beatiful execution with killer tech..yeah, i know that you lot claim it has fake-frags but who really cares, its entertaining.

Respect, it was a movie with great frags and direction in that way, but what it was lacking was a theme.

Zulg (the entire fooze for that matter) deserves this. There shouldn't be doubt that the awards they got were unfair/etc.

However I'd see TheBadge 3.0 make more serious competition. Although the frags (maybe, who knows) was staged, it was pure jawdropping art. Music could have been different but it was excellent in it's own way.

Heads up and congratz everyone, I'm sure something was forgotten though. It's hard to tell. Now you crazy ass m0f0 filmmakers go do it again!

Actually, I think that XSU:Gold is the best UT fragmovie but definitely not the best UT movie and not close to the best all-game fragmovies.

It's the best fragmovie within UT, no doubt. As I said it's flawless but no "story" or theme. But as it is a fragmovie I guess that's irrelevant..:)

It's a shame that no RtCW videos got a mention, from what I could see. The video made by mTw.aTn|Wirsi, called Deep Sea Fishing is great for frags, whilst the Japanese Big Gamer RTCW Movie is a great movie type video.

Like some1 else posted Made for Quaks is the most underrated movie out there.

That movie should easily have won Audio,no1 even comes close to the transistions that Made for Quake contains.

The intro has some awesome editing and sync.
