Yeah, but all had the opportunity. It was posted here so, people had the choice and a few days. Nonetheless, things can now move forward regarding legislation, promotion, and sanctioning. I'll be on LO3, djWHEAT's show on Sunday to answer q's and such.

I think with proper organization and promotion, things will grow for competitions. Quake Live has some decent numbers for a hardcore high skilled game that is technically an old game. Of those numbers, I'm sure many don't know of the competitions, or simply don't compete because of the huge skill gap. Add some proper rankings, separate the good from the medium to the new and hold tournaments like that and things should increase. The small DM scene holds this site up doesn't it?

alexa reports +200k people visiting the quakelive.com every day but the real question is how many of them actually enter a match

you can check the awards section called "experience" and see how many people played 10 hours compared to registering or playing vs the initial bot.

my guess is that they are max 1500 concurrent users (on game servers) during the peak.

i'd like to put one more digit

in that case they would be slightly below l4d and tf2 which is highly unlikely

it is concurrent users playing on the servers at one moment not a lifetime achievement. according to ID most of the users are from 4 countries (usa, uk, germany, poland)

if you would have 12 hours a day with 1000 users playing at the same time you would have about 670 concurrent users. i could design a model coming up with more realistic numbers based in the stats you get from the "experience" section. but if those numbers were so good ID would probably publish them on the site or make them visible like valve does with steam. simple marketing rule: if your numbers are good, publish them!

(50290 players * 24+ hours played) / (12 hours a day * 150 days since stats get recorded) = 670

numbers:

players : exact number from the stats, probably updated once someone reaches those hours

hours played: from lifetime achievements, several people probably played more than just 24 hours

to average out that hours played is not exact the following two are picked with lower numbers than actual real numbers would look like

hours a day: to get higher average numbers, peaks are higher and assumes the player play during 6 hours in the evening in european and american timezones, number is more likely higher but evens out the peak vs lower numbers played during the other time of the day

days since stats were recorded: started in february iirc and that would be close to 8 months, so that number is lower as well

everything id could have done with the QL platform

the brand "quake" is (was? considering quake 4) good but the product needs improvement to attract serious numbers and content so those people stay and play the game. so far id software have never been the ones improving the product so that it attracted lots of people. i wonder how they are going to fill out that role.

Shouldn't it be the other way around?

It's not so much of a "pro gamer tour" when you let everybody enter them for free, it'll just suffer the same fate as all other quake tournaments with dropouts and forfeits... if you want "free to play" - why not base that on a £30 signup fee for a team, and deduct money paid back to the player at the end of the season for every game forfeited, or if the team drops, no money back.
