It did'nt get fixed in Q3. I guess your only option is to get another gig of ram and 10,000rpm hard drive.

try disabling punkbuster and playing on non pb servers

I've had this very problem for months. I always thought it was my connection.. could it have been pb? I know the SS thing is new in PB but I have freezes lasting about 5 seconds once every 10 minutes or so, for the last 4 months (give or take). Anyone have any idea what this is?

I think the PB thing is new, and yes it is VERY unplayable.

I've been wondering what happened recently to change my nice smooth q4max server into a stuttering, fps-dropping lag machine...like you said...every few minutes. Thanks for the heads up, Levi240, vetch, and AnthionyJ (from this thread http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1094659 ). I hadn't heard that the latest punkbuster had added auto-screenshot-send to it's list of tricks.

I'll try running without pb enabled.

I have been getting this too, though there are no screenshots in my "quake4\pb\scrnshot" folder, nor any other folders.

I was away from home this past weekend, and so wasn't home when the pb update first came along.....but not too long after I started playing on Sunday evening (presumably enough time for pb to get around to updating itself) I started having a similar problem.

I don't just get little freezes though.....my client completely locks up, sometimes for as much as 10-15 seconds or more......I think my ping will often jump really high as well.....then it'll come out of it and I'll briefly be able to move, maybe......suffice to say, Q4 has been completely unplayable for me ever since.

And I know it has nothing to do with any particular mod, since I have this problem in both Q4MAX and Q4base. I also know this isn't a hardware problem....my computer isn't absolutely bleeding edge or anything, but it's good, and I've almost never had fps lag while playing, even when I first bought the game. And I've checked the system out repeatedly, and it's running great.

Nothing like this had EVER happened to me before.....not until just after the last pb update.

EDIT: Well, whadda ya know, disable pb and the problem disappears....reenable it, and the problem comes back, not quite as bad, but definitely there again. Fucking pb.

Lets just hope that more and more servers turn PB off.. Nice testing before releasing it ;p

ermmm. I get this, but in Quake 3. I started getting it say about 2 days ago... But i did have a wireless router installed. My modem connects to the router, then that connects into my comp. A laptop uses the wireless connection. On Quake my connection is smooth (smoother than before) but i'm getting these, lags that last a second. :/

Maybe this has nothing to do with your problem, unless if it IS pee bee...

Well, I'm pretty sure it is pb now. The lags are more like a 'stutter' lasting just a second, yeah :(

I was confused, because just before the PB update, I installed a new motherboard and CPU, so I thought it was hardware related. But since quake is the only game with problems and the rest of my pc doesnt stutter, it just has to be.

set the virtual memory of all ure hdd,s @ 1-100 mb ( this wil make it lag but a lot less )

turning off virtual memory is not a good idea, even with large amounts of ram. (however this has been argued about before.)
if you don't have it set on, and it needs to use it, it's just going to complain. so why not just leave it on?

also i heard it's not a good idea to set the page file smaller than the amount of physical ram you have. (can someone confirm this?)

some good tips for setting virtual memory is:

1.5 times the amount of ram you have

512mb = 768
1024mb(1gb) = 1536

also set the initial and maximum size the same amount otherwise you can fragment your drives faster.

another good tip is put the page file on a seperate drive (if you have one that is) otherwise when it does have to use the pagefile it will be using the same drive you're playing the game from. though if you do only have one drive you have no choice.

though i doubt these are the reasons people are getting stuttering problems recently. id say it's punkbuster as well. (been getting the same things since the release of the new pb update) unless you've had the problem since q4 came out, then it's probably a system issue.

Lots of pages on Microsoft.com recommend 1.5 times the physical RAM, although I think the real minimum value is total physical + 12Mb. I believe if you ever get a BSOD and you have a pagefile smaller than this, it will cause windows to error when trying to write its crashdump as it uses the pagefile to do this.

Not the biggest of issues since most people dont really do anything with the crashdump, but still...

if you use DHCP , try turn it off and enter IP manually

Hi my name is Jacob. Just a week ago i downloaded Quake 3. I started to play online and it was really fun but now when I click multiplayer it says no response from master server. So now I can't get online. I've tried a bunch of different things but it still doesn't work. Do you have any suggestions?

1. downloaded Q3? So a warez version? (its not a free game).

I had this too. I changed pb_sleep from default 60 to 500 and i'm sure it was less frequent, but it still happens and it's damn annoying.
Specially when it happenes when you're in the middle of jump like teleport on Phrantic.

Two solutions I'd recommend:

1) Place pb_sleep to 500 (this will make the lags less frequent on PB Enabled servers).
2) Play on non-enabled servers. Many public servers (previously with PB Enabled) have chosen to disable punkbuster until they've fixed this horrific release. (Example here.

3) Play Games with netcode.

I prefer playing games I like.

seriously i don't see how anybody would care enough to make cheats for q4 so why don't they just remove pb already?

You would be surprised. There are already cheats flying around with modified .exe's and after looking a the DL counters 100's of people have already tried DL them.
So who knows.

Try settin pb_sleep to 500 it helps a bit

i was getting a few large lags at the start of playing, they could have been pb screen shots, but when i turned r_usesmp to 0 the issue was resolved. I was also getting a stuttering about every 5 mins felt like i was only getting every second fram rendered or somthing similar - also solved by r_usesmp 0. My system is a x2 4400+, it seems r_usesmp 1 is not friendly to it.
