meh q4... but go Sweden none the less.

yep idd 'meh'. Or the NC should be called off, or the layout should change, with money and LANfinal.
/me thinks of the BWEC back in the days.. sniff, the good old days =<<. bring it back plzz

Yeah go Sweden!

Won't a possible six-mapper be exactly the same as two best-of-3's? With the exception that it might go faster, since Sweden could win with 2-0.

Just don't understand why the change in rules is better, could someone explain? :)

indeed, 2 times 3 mapper would make us see a minimum of 2 maps

this today now makes us see at least 3 maps, which is good ;)

well they said they preferred not to see two matches, so I'd assume they want as few maps as possible. wouldn't they prefer the possibility of a minimum two maps, if the maximum is the same for the two alternatives?

Time for another gold medal;)

Hehe, for sure ;-)

That's exactly what I think when Australia takes part in the commonwealth games ^^

oOooOOOOoo.

the what games? ;)

The games where you guys get reminded who the fuck owns your land!

The monarch can own it for all I care, we still rip them at sport!

what's the reasoning behind wearing that flag?

THis is the old german flag, from the german empire 1871-1919
I like the colors :)
And i like the attitude from that times, not like today ... all germans whine about everything ...

(it has nothing todo with nazi or smt and it is not banned in germany or anywhere)

I think the main problem here is that it's commonly used by all neonazis nowadays after the swastika was banned.
One could say it's the the legal neonazi symbol par excellence.

There's more to it than just using-this-instead-of-that though:
(this is just out of the top of my head I'm sorry for any inaccuricies)

1) The "Deutsches (Kaiser)Reich" 1871-1918 was a lot bigger than the current german territory. Namely Elsass-Lothringen and the polish/russian land was still part of germany back then. Obviously using a flag that stands for a "reich" that is much bigger than germany today is liked among a special group of people...
2) The state that originally used this flag was known for being anti-democratic to its bone. The german social-democrats (not to mention anything more left than them) were being prosecuted a lot ("sozialistengesetze"). I don't think I'll have to explain while this too appeals to my special group of people again.
3) The official flag of 1933-1945 re-used all the colours of the old flag and those also were used for "bracelets" and lots more. And I really really doubt that's just a coincidence.

I just don't see the reason of it appearing on ESR to be honest. For me and probably a lot more people it is a symbol of the aggressive german right-wing.

you are an example of another german attitude i dont like

and btw, u know what the red star stands for ? :]

rofl

germany has a history of anti-democracy but im pretty sure that doesnt grant a reason to ban that flag. maybe ban the one i have set instead, after all, its anti-democracy too right?

I agree the flag shouldn't be banned, but what bothers me is why exactly a German would want to use symbols of that era

idd. "i like the colors" sounds pretty lame to me, "i like the attitude of that time" sounds stupid at best

I liked the colors too, the flag itself doesn't mean anything to me.
Would you still get offended about it? It's the same as if I got offended about people using russian flag or a swedish flag...

edit: This wasn't ment to offend you. I posted this just to point out that even if he uses that flag, theres a chance that he just likes it, not because he wants to offend you or anyone else.

well, if you use it, i wouldnt mind. youre finish and so you probably don't know much about german history. but a german should be well aware of the history of his own country and the implications this flag bears

I understand why you feel offended by it.

My apologies if I offended you.
I better stop talking about this matter before someone really gets angry at me. :)

on the contrary, i am not offended at all by you :)

I accidentally plussed this post. But since I did, I feel need to make a small comment on the following

I just don't see the reason of it appearing on ESR to be honest. For me and probably a lot more people it is a symbol of the aggressive german right-wing.

Even though old German nazi-regime is a sensitive topic for considerably large part of europe, there is no need to ban symbols or flags in the first place, it just makes them shine brighter. Just let it go already.

edit : typo

Good post, but what I really think matters is the intent when choosing that particular flag. The swastika is an old symbol of the sun, and if someone for some reason used it somewhere and gave a good motivation ( = something like a belief in nature or the sun or whatever, as the original symbol is intended), I'd accept that. We can't just ban symbols because some people regard them as unpleasant; that way, we wouldn't have any symbols at all.

And no, the disclaimer: I am, like every sane person, not defending fascism/nazism or anything resembling it.

hey you, stop that madness!!
banning symbols is the very german way of solving problems! it roxx

it is obviously not, there are very few symbols actually banned in germany, the swastika in a white colored sphere surrounded by red color is, for a good reason don't you think?

when it comes to discussing about symbols like the flag of the 2nd reich, it is about the context in which those symbols are presented and how the people act, that use this symbol in any kind of way.

when it comes to discussing about symbols like the flag of the 2nd reich, it is about the context in which those symbols are presented and how the people act, that use this symbol in any kind of way.

There's a funny seed of truth to what he propably accidentally said:: Banning shit is dumb, you start with banning things, proceed with burning books and end up with reveling in shame for another few generations. Just LET IT GO already, nobody else but germans think about germans the way germans think people think about germans. Yes, pisses me off.

well, i am not that kind of guy who thinks he has to wear the burden of our history and to live in shame of the 3rd reich, that grew out off our society 70-80 years ago. But I rather like us (germans) to be more cautious about those topics than to forget it.

I know, to people outside of germany, this sometimes seems weird and like we're overreacting, but that's our history and the legacy we have, if we want it or not.

I am certainly against banning this flag, but german history has it's consequences which are thus harsher in my country than anywhere else

The symbol for the sun has it's end pointing in the other direction.
But there are several other places where swastikas are used, from ancient cavedrawings to chinese peace movements to only finnish military flags.
But if Germans use it, it will probably always be related to neonazism.

It's a scandinavian symbol of good luck.
It represents the Cross of Freedom in Finland.
It's in the finnish Medal of Honor and in the flag of the president of Finland.
I could continue this list for ever, and only a fraction of it would give a negative meaning to swastika.

The finnish military version of swastika actually came from Sweden from the plane they donated us. It's also a symbol of some royal family in sweden, those guys were the ones who helped the finnish white army.

It's a sad thing that it has become such an evil symbol even though it's ment to mean only good things for the majority of nations.

You just proved his point :(

#30 You take the point! Such symbols should be banned.

use reply ! :P

Cute nick <3

why is this flag available? oO

Well... I talked to Sujoy on irc and he asked me if he should create a thread about it because he wouldn't like censoring something without having some form of debate. I told him it's no use cos apart from me noone would notice anyway and I'll only get the german hordes flaming me.
Guess I was wrong :)

ok call me dumb but.... whats wrong with it O_o
*edit* ok its been explained now i understand why

look at arachnoids reply above ;)

I tend to think banning is a poor substitute to reasoning and discussion. However since a few different people contacted me separately about this (and that I have no knowledge on the subject) I decided to delete the flag avatar and if anyone wants it back they can post a discussion with the reasons why.

give me the names of those poor educated people !
i bet most of them are germans :/

free your mind and educate yourself...

edit:
ah, yes, i want it back ... because ? Because it's just a flag !
If you delete that flag and don't want to be inconsistent
you have to delete a few other flags too ...

I have no prejudice on the subject, post a topic and if everyone agrees then so be it.

it is a user avatar

Today(!) is the Grand Final!

I`ve edited the newsitem.

- I`ve set it to say "today" is the match.
- I`ve added the game-modus to the newsitem, so PLEASE CHECK because it`s a bit unusual.

funn count down :)

Drush FTW

q3 cup again pls!

gogo a-Losers (playing it safe) :P

its basically an a-Loser internal?

a-L 2v2, with two ringers on each team :P
anyway, sweden will win this easy peasy \o/

So basicly there's almost no advantage from coming from upperbracket? Is the headadmin German?

no, nofear is from belgium

and actually 1 mapwin advantage is quite a lot ;)

Bit out of date now, but still:

One mapwin equals 1/5 of a game. I reckon the fact that playing 2 entire 5-mappers would take looooooong time, but a map up isn't really anything when playing in that format. And not compared to the "normal" that advantage is given. (ie. when you only have to win one out of two games at CPL).

On the other hand I think it was a decent solution, allthough I still thinks there's a great conspiracy to promote German quakers!

Whoa:

Scheduled: 22:00 EET, 24 May 2006 to 23:00 EET, 24 May 2006
Time Remaining: 06:22

Real time clock?? And it's ticking?!?!?
That's AWESOME for people on different timezones!

The miracle of information technology. so beautiful, isn't it? :D

Hush you smartass you :p I wasn't genuinely surprised of seeing such thing, but I was genuinely glad someone implemented and/or used it.. I'm praising Levi240's excellent announcements regarding CB events and I remain hopeful they all will have a countdown-timer from now on! That's how bad and lazy I'm with timezone-conversions. :D

well for news where several matches are announced like the daily EC news, it makes no sense cos you can only add 1 counter per news.

Yes, I can see that. Anyway, this was the first time I've seen the timer. Perhaps it just means I should visit ESR more often.

i have actually started adding the daily EC posts to the schedule ... starting from the 1st match time...now maybe it will be easier for you to work out the rest :) if you have the 1st match time

Not that impressed with any of the teams TBH.
I'm sure Sweden would do a lot better with people like fox and tox.

"would do a lot better" ?

wtf? they reached the finals undefeatedly with this lineup. what more can you want?

next to that, fox is lost somewhere on our nice planet to play 1v1 with mr. wendel and toxic is also focussing on 1v1

Don't bother. The guy is completely clueless.
