The original diabz: My story (11 comments)
Posted by hnns @ 18:45 CST, 3 February 2011 - iMsg
I didn't want to tell this story. The last time my nick was stolen it was so painful I didn't think I'd ever recover. The hurt was so bad I trained myself to block it from my thoughts and memories, and hoped that one day I would be able to once again go about my life with the same cheerfulness and glee that my family and friends once knew to be my characteristics.

After years of counselling, an abundant of medication and a short phase in the Church of Scientology I finally felt like I was making progress. Things were picking up, and for the first time in years I actually felt optimistic about the future. Maybe there was a life to be had, after all?

But recent events have resurfaced old wounds. With two ESR threads, a decade of shock-therapy went down the drain.

Let it be known that everything you have read so far has been nothing but organized lies and malicious propaganda. Neither of these so-called diabz are the real diabz. Because the real diabz.....
is me.

It all began in the long winter of 1998. I had made quite the name of myself in the infamous Icelandic Action Quake2 community. I was already getting invites from some of the best clans out there; there were even whispers that I would soon surpass the legendary "Scope" as the best MP5/kevlar player out there.

Then came February 9th. It was dark outside; I could hear the wind howling like an injured animal. I was playing public - standard 5on5 team-play. Map after map I topped the scoreboard, and sure enough my team always won. The other players didn't believe me when I changed my nick to diabz[MP3]. I didn't need sound; I was unstoppable. What could possibly go wrong? The world was mine to take.

Next the impossible happened.

diabz connected
diabz joined team 2

Sometimes late at night when I lay awake pondering, I can still picture it.

I still remember how I immediately lost feelings in my legs, as if the ground had been pulled down from underneath me. It felt as if someone had simultaneously punched me in the ear and kicked my balls, only to proceed by peeing all over my aching body.

I tried typing in protest but my fingers would not move. I could not even reach the console button. I was effectively paralyzed.

You have to understand I was only eleven years old. I was brought up in a loving community and this was evil I had never imagined could have existed. I sat there frozen for several hours staring at the screen before emotions finally got the better of me and I started a frantic episode of screams and cries.

My parents rushed in, they had been fast asleep in the next room, unbeknownst to the horror that had occurred just a few meters away to their only son. They looked at the screen and immediately saw what had happened. I still remember the look of disappointment in my father’s eyes, and the tears of sadness pouring down from my mother. Was this all my fault? Could I have done something different? She later told me they blamed themselves.

I never did play Action Quake2 again. As time went on my name and prospect slowly eradicated from peoples' mind. Years later I heard Scope and his clan proceeded to win the Nordic Winter Ladders of '98 and '99. I'm happy for him.

The year is 1930 in a small community in the south-west USA. A white woman has been raped and a black man has been accused. There's a furious mob rioting, demanding a hanging. You(white, not-racist) have been asked to testify and your testimony is deciding. You know the man is innocent. You know they'll hang him if he's found guilty. You also know if you say he's guilty it will stop the rioting completely thus saving the other negro folk in the community from the wrath of the mob and there's even a good chance it will save other people's life.

a) guilty
b) not guilty

Quakecon 2009 rant (35 comments)

Some random thoughts on qcon, which I managed to see about 70% of.

Coverage

I was disappointed prior to the tournament when I heard ESL wouldn't be following on their invitational with a trip for 2GD to Texas. But QuadV did good.

It started badly the first day when the Gaylords internet crashed at the worst imaginable time. ESR screamed "GREAT COVERAGE LOLOL" but really it was out of their hand. Their end, the internet stream, help up nicely prior to the epic walter T4 match. They did well by requesting and succeeding in having play halted for the rest of the day until the problem could be fixed the following day.

For the rest of the event it ran smoothly for the most part.
A few technical glitches such as reversed pov/sound and the occasional buffering annoyance. Video quality was excellent and you could even comprehend Slasher's Darth-Vader voice. DJWheat's has a fun casting style and his good spirit shined through and mixed well with Slasher who had some interesting comments and interviews. I enjoyed having fatal1ty casting a game and he proved he still knows what the game is about.

On the down side you could easily see that Tosspot doesn't have an understanding of the game nor the community. His comments raged me a great deal.

Duel tournament

In the weeks before the tournament there was a great deal of disbelief and you arrogance towards the NA players and their supposed lack of skill. They proved them all wrong with a very strong showing. I think people underrestimated the importance of Practice, Practice, Practice (c) fatal1ty and the fact that this wasn't the traditional DM6 and ZTN tournament. The American approach to this tournament was more intelligent and professional than of many of the european players.

In a seven map tournament, with 3 completely new maps, with the correct preparation you can get a great advantage on your more skilled, more lazy opponents. You practice the new maps and make them your home maps. If you want to win, you don't go to a tournament like this with DM6 as your home map and pray to god you don't get T9 or Ca2 in the coin toss.
This is why DaHang and stermy did better than Av3k. Rapha won because he prepared for the tournament like a professional, put in the hours he needed and made sure he was good on ALL maps.

Cypher and Av3k may be more skilled than the rest of the field but they don't have that professional approach. I guess $14,000 isn't alot of money in Poland and Belarus. On that note someone needs to slap Av3k like the bitch he is. When he was being interviewed by Slasher he didn't look at him once, something on the computer screen was more interesting.

At the end of Q3 Fox would place consistently in the top 5 at these tournaments. But since he hasn't yet won a "major" he gets flamed for being overrated. That's ridicilous, but I don't think anyone expected him to place 7-8 in this tournament. Before the
tournament I said I thought spartie was overrated and how wrong was I. I still think fox is much better than spartie. I have no idea how he lost that match 2-0. I guess LAN's just bring out the best of spartie. He played amazing.

Walter could have won this tournament and that still wouldn't prove anything about years old cheating accusation. He did prove though that he is a decent player and as for his first LAN he did ok. But he can never compare his skill to tournament
veteran ZeRo4 again, plz.

DKT deserves a mention for a surprisingly good showing. Maybe not surprising for the American scene.

CTF Tournament

The ESR poll showed that 72% thought fnatic would win and EG only got 16%. The all-star lineup of fnatic got them unrealistic expectation from people that probably don't know much about CTF. EG winning shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone. Fnatic had probably the best attacker (linkin) in the world but the rest of their team consisted mostly of players that were going to Quakecon for the 1on1 tournament. EG players had no duelling aspiration to get in the way of their CTF preperation.

I have never known stermy, fox or spartie to have played much CTF in their time. On top of this, Americans have played 4on4 CTF for 9 years. 4on4 CTF is very different from the european 5on5. To hone that transition to perfection takes more than a few dozens online clan matches.

Fnatic actually did surprisingly good and they were >< this close to beating EG in their match but lost both maps in a VERY painful way. But this was always EG's tourney to win.

i grow weary of endless propagandist news reports on terrorism. "The greatest threat to western civilization" my ass. The likelyhood of me, or any brit or americano for that matter being killed by a terrorist act are so slim you probably couldn't even calculate it. I'm guessing you're more likely to die from a candy-machine falling over you. But I'm not going to live in fear of candy-machines. I WONT!

And what just happened in London? An abandoned car found in a street with explosives. THAT'S IT? That's the cruel might of al-qaida? Instead of mocking and embracing the pathetic incompetence of these imbociles lets make a huge deal out of it and encourage more "security" for our citizens. Let's use this "act" to infringe on our citizens privacy, we need more cameras! more spying! you need to be afraid! Let's do exactly what the "terrorists" want us to do. Most western governments and terrorist seem to have the same objective, that all citizens should live in fear. That way they can exploit us in numerous ways.

Let the donut cops deal with terrorist, not the army.

nba fans? (31 comments)

so went to my first NBA game, it was christmas day with defending champions Miami vs Lakers. As a kid I watched alot of NBA but after Jordan and Barkley and kool and the gang retired i sort of lost interested.

Anyway what I found disappointing was how no one in the Arena seemed to be a fan of either team. There was no passion for the game, I expected Lakers fans flying from Los Angeles cheering for their team but I saw almost nobody, and it was a pretty big game. It's all a show for television.
I hoped for something like in the english premiership where fans go crazy singing, shouting, cheering, booing, CARING, but you're forced to just sit there keeping your cool and occasionally standing up for soldiers of the war and the anthem.

Anyway it was a good trip and americans are extremely nice people, almost too nice!

on sites like these where people are indulged with anonymity one wonders how well it portrays someones true character. In my case I sure hope not. however certain characteristics that many here on ESR share are interesting to take note of. Like the need many have to always be right(not naming any names). To desperately try to win every single arguement they get themselves involved is a character flaw, probably due to weak egos and self esteem.
People who always try to win arguements should ask themselves why they do it, why do you so desperately need to let random people on forums you'll never meet anyway know you're smarter than they are?

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.' If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

In my opinion, one can generally group people into three different categories:

a) people who are intelligent and know they are
b) people who are dumb and know they are
c) people who are dumb but think they are intelligent

I think group c has to be, inevitably, the largest margion of the three!
