Clicky keyboards (33 comments)

I'm in the market for a new, USB keyboard with good tactile feeling, sort of like the old IBM keyboards. Keyboards tend to last me a long time, so I want to invest in a good one, but I'm not really familiar with what's out there. Anybody have any ideas?

WMO vs IM1.1 (8 comments)
Posted by dirtyhairy @ 00:46 CDT, 16 June 2008 - iMsg
I've been using a WMO for years now and have become quite fond of its shape and low heft, but the time has come that I need a side-button. The IM1.1 seems like the most logical option, but the trouble is that no place around here sells them and as a result I cannot test one. Therefore, I enlist the help of those who have used both mouses and ask the following questions before ordering one from the internet:

1) How similar are their shapes, aside from the side button?
2) Is the IM1.1 noticeably heavier, if at all?
3) To the button presses feel the same?

Thanks for your help.

I can't change any settings (thru console or menu) ingame and have those changes present the next time I start the game. This only started happening after i reformatted and reinstalled Q3. Has anybody else had this problem?

Review my build (No comments)
Posted by dirtyhairy @ 17:51 CDT, 9 June 2008 - iMsg
It's been a loooong time since I've made a computer, and I may have become a bit rusty. I'm looking to get a computer around the $750 ballpark. I've spec'd one out on newegg that seems really solid, but I want you guys to look it over and see if there's anything I'm missing out on, like good deals or components that I can comfortably skimp out on or should buy higher quality. This build is focused around playing COD4 at low settings and a moderate-low resolution. I'd also rather buy everything off of Newegg because of their great customer support.

Here's what I came up with (all prices are after instant rebates and markdowns)

COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 w/o PSU - $50
I've heard nothing but good things about this case--it's cheap, easy to work with, and has surprisingly good airflow. I'm not too worried here.

Seagate Barracuda 250GB - $60
I don't need that much space or hard drive performance. If you can find a cheaper drive that's 250GB, SATA, and reliable, that'd be great.

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L - $90
This is the "energy saver" version of the GA-P35-DS3L. Luckily, the electronics are the same and the only difference is that the board supports the use of an optional energy saver driver. The board has to support overclocking well, and this one seems to fit the bill.

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 - $132
Already fast and a massive overclocker. The computer will get used mostly for games and audio applications (SONAR, Ableton Live, etc.), so I don't see the use for quad core. An upgrade to a more budget-oriented quad core in the future (when more apps support it) seems much more reasonable.

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - $45
While they don't OC as well as the F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ, they are 90 dollars cheaper and still OC very well. Plus, they're very, very cheap (50% off).

EVGA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB - $160
I was going to go for a 9600GT for about $150, but I noticed that this 8800GT was just 10 bucks more and performed better than the 9600GT. The 512mb 8800 GTS are all over $200 and seem to be too expensive for my budget.

CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W - $100
I don't think I'll need 650W for this system, but this PSU was the same price after free shipping and has the same MIR. Why not get this one? Is there some cheaper PSU that could fit the bill and be as reliable?

ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro - $27
I like these coolers. Reduces temps a lot while being cheap. To me, it's worth the extra money.

SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R - $27
Unfortunately, I don't have a DVD burner in my old PC that I could use in this one.

Creative X-Fi - $0
Using the one I have in my old PC.

After shipping and tax, this computer ends up costing $771 (1.12x subtotal).

Alternative to the CPL Mouse fix (44 comments)
Posted by dirtyhairy @ 20:30 CDT, 5 May 2008 - iMsg
One dark, stormy night, Cheese had too much time on his hands... and this was born!

This is simply a better registry fix than the CPL Mouse fix and provides the raw 1-to-1 mouse outputs that you get with Anir's mousefix, but safe and not intrusive.

http://files.filefront.com/cheesemfixzip/;10141228;/fileinfo.html

Excerpt from the readme:
My fix aims to fill the gap between the CPL Mouse fix and Anir's. When used correctly, it will provide the perfect 1-to-1 mouse movements of Anir's fix while operating on the widely accepted principles of the CPL mousefix. It works by having many different acceleration "curves" which, in this case, are *perfectly* straight lines that account for most screen refresh rates users game with and can be easily modified for the refresh rates I didn't include. I've included many other .reg files for other feels and testing purposes--read INSTRUCTIONS for explanations. Ideally, someone will come around, analyze my work, and code a program that can sit in the system tray and automatically change the acceleration graph when the screen's refresh rate changes on-the-fly. I see something like that as being a very strong fix that is acceptable by LANs and Tournaments.
