Crazy Mouse: Mionix Naos 5000 (2 comments)
Posted by ryan85 @ 05:07 CDT, 25 August 2010 - iMsg
This is the Mionix Naos 5000.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=4382465

I know that this mouse likely sucks due to the no name brand and ripoff of Ikari shape BUT it has several interesting features/marketing gimmicks.

It has a "Surface Quality Analyzer" which apparently rates how well the mouse will track on your mousepad.

You can also supposedly change the liftoff distance.

I don't know what the sensor is but it looks like the Xai sensor which isn't great to say the least.

Thoughts?

Mice DPI on X and Y axis (20 comments)
Posted by ryan85 @ 07:42 CDT, 26 March 2010 - iMsg
I found an interesting post on Gotfag recently about how widescreen in OpenGL games may require a higher DPI setting on the Y axis.

http://www.gotfrag.com/cs/forums/thread/415245/

Here's some information copied from the post:

"Gaming mice and mice in general were designed for 4:3 aspect ratio especially when it comes to openGL games. This can be problematic when going widescreen and using the full widescreen native resolution the aspect ratio is 16:9 or 16:10. Its clearly evident there is a stretch factor involved so first off you require to know if your widescreen is a 16:9 or 16:10 monitor.

Calculations:
16:9 = (4)(4) : (3)(3) ------> with respect to the 4:3 ratio
16:10= (4)(4) : (3)(3.33) ----> with respect to the 4:3 ratio
What this tells us is that the X axis is stretched far more than the Y axis I could go into more math as to how to solve this but I think ill skip this part and show what you should set your Set Point options to in order to solve this problem.

The fix

1) Once in the Set Point gaming options, uncheck the Link X/Y resolution settings

2) Change the X-axis dpi and Y-axis depending on the DPI that you use, here are the numbers you might find useful:

Playing on 1800DPI
For 16:9 ratio Set X-axis dpi to 1800 and Y-axis Dpi to 2000 dpi
For 16:10 ratio Set X-axis dpi to 1800 and Y-axis Dpi to 1950 dpi

Playing on 800DPI
For 16:9 ratio Set X-axis dpi to 800 and Y-axis Dpi to 1000 dpi
For 16:10 ratio Set X-axis dpi to 800 and Y-axis Dpi to 950 dpi

Playing on 400DPI
For 16:9 ratio Set X-axis dpi to 400 and Y-axis Dpi to 600 dpi
For 16:10 ratio Set X-axis dpi to 400 and Y-axis Dpi to 550 dpi

3) Once done hit apply and try it out.

In general you want to keep your X-axis dpi at the level you intend to play at while depending on if it was a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect monitor you would up your Y-axis dpi by 200 or 150 respectively. I hope this helps those who enjoy the benefit of playing on the native resolution of their widescreen, enjoy. "
Credit to Emilk for the post.

This makes sense to me. Ever since switching to widescreen my aim has got worse in older games that I still play actively. This may be the solution.
However, which mice on the market can set the X and Y axis DPI separately? I know the G9x can but I'd rather not use it because of the positive accel.

id Software Web Store = SCAM (25 comments)
Posted by ryan85 @ 04:02 CST, 19 January 2010 - iMsg
I haven't posted on this site on a long time but I wanted to share an unfortunate experience involving id Software's web store.
http://www.idsoftware.com/store/

Some of you may recall an event being posted on this site about a throwback tournament for RtCW. Well that is my favorite multiplayer game so I made a team and entered the tournament.

I ordered a copy of the game from id's web store. The game is a digital download so I downloaded it and installed it. HOWEVER, my receipt said my cd-key would be sent by e-mail from [email protected].

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Serial Number: Error: id Software ([email protected]) will e-mail your serial number to you soon.

So I figured hmm, no problem. I'll probably just receive it in a day or so. It has now been 9 DAYS and I have not received anything.

I e-mailed websales@idsoftware twice which is the only given e-mail on the site. I was polite in the first e-mail but in the second one I was getting angry and remarked how they have very poor customer service. I even used 2 separate e-mail accounts (Yahoo and Gmail) in case it was being sent to to the junk email of whatever idiot is in charge of web sales.

I then e-mailed SyncError ([email protected]) this past Friday explaining the situation. I know this isn't really the area he works in, nevertheless he works for id Software and I thought maybe he would be able to help. I was polite in my e-mail but have not received a response from him either.

I am now certain id Software has no intention of ever e-mailing my cd-key which makes me unable to play online. I consider this fraud. They basically stole $20 from me.

I just thought I would relay this story to the readers of this site so they don't get screwed as I did. And a big FUCK YOU goes out to id Software. I personally plan on never purchasing any of their games again.

Accelfix.exe incompatible with SP3 (36 comments)
Posted by ryan85 @ 05:49 CDT, 2 May 2008 - iMsg
Just a heads up for those of you who use the accelfix.exe file...
It doesn't work properly with the newly released SP3 for XP. You can still apply it but it messes up your sensitivity and gives a really strange feeling. I'm trying to find the guy who made it (aion) so he can make a new version but no luck so far.
