Round 1 has some pretty interesting matches to kick things off. The two I'm most interested in are probably the 2 challenger matches from Europe, as we see the return of Garpy and Serious, two players that have shown incredible potential in the past, so I'm excited to see how they'll perform this weekend.

For me it's not so much about rapha as it is about gifting two NA players a place in the playoffs for being from NA.

Yea, EU is more stacked with experienced talent, but I think it's more than just rapha in NA who is competitive against top EU players.

DaHang is arguably a top player in any Quake game since Q2. He has top finishes in most major QC LANs (beating pretty much every top EU player on LAN at some point) and even won an early LAN with innovative Clutch use (that everyone emulated afterward).

Psygib had a very competitive set against toxjq at DH Winter 2018 (LAN), and beat both toxjq and xron at Katowice (LAN). That was back before toxjq checked out and was still trying to win games.

Cha1n has improved significantly. He beat Cooller and DaHang in LB at Katowice (LAN). And while he got 3-0'd by Vengeur at QCon 2020 (online), two of the three games were very close. He also beat DaHang in Season 2 stage 1 and had a couple of close games against Rapha.

I don't think it matters. You could have Rapha play every single EU player, or just wait until a top EU player is selected. Result will be the same.

In the last two major events (Katowice and QCon 2020) he looked untouchable, only dropping a single game in those two tournaments combined. For context, he played CNZ (3-0'd in the tournament where CNZ beat Cypher and Base), Cypher (2-0'd), Vengeur (3-0'd, 3-1), and Raisy (3-0'd, 4-0'd, and 3-0'd).

Considering Cypher, Vengeur, and Raisy are 3 of the 4 top-seeded EU players, it's highly dubious to think Rapha won't win this tournament again. Rapha is the GOAT.

I don't think that's correct. Where did you get that info from? I went back and looked at every tournament that rapha played against Cypher and k1llsen in QC. Here are the results:

Against Cypher, rapha is 2-2 in matches and 6-6 in games. He lost 1-3 in QPL Season 1, Stage 3 finals. He won 2-0 in QPL Season 1, Stage 2 finals. He lost 1-3 in QPL Season 1, Stage 1 finals. And he won 2-0 at DH Winter 2018.

Against K1llsen, rapha is 3-2 in matches and 8-6 in games. He had two matches against k1llsen in QPL Season 1, Stage 3 finals. He won their first set 3-0, and then lost 2-3. At the QPL Kickoff event, he lost 0-2. At DH Winter 2018, he won 3-1. Lastly, he won 2-0 at the Italian Esports Open in 2018.

But it's also somewhat irrelevant because, at the most recent tournament, he shredded everyone.

I'm not sure about Cypher vs. Rapha history in QL, but I do know that they alternated QCon wins for several years. And I agree that Cypher is awesome, and is one of the few players who seems to understand how Rapha plays and is able to counter it. He's definitely one of my fav players to spectate. And back in CPMA VQ3 days, he was simply godly. The way he could aim and move was near perfection, imo.

I don't think it diminishes Cypher in any way to say that Rapha is currently the best QC player. What Stonneh appears to be implying is that Rapha is overrated or that he's given a free pass to the finals in every tournament. But, from watching him, he looks like he's on another level. I think Rapha has worked for it. He has more discipline in the way he approaches the game than other pros. He doesn't go for flashy plays. He's very "by the numbers." Also, in some sense, it would be embarrassing if Rapha were not the top player because, afaik, he's the only QPL player who is dedicated full-time to QC. Everyone else has other jobs they do to sustain their livelihoods.

However, this means we'll see games on ping 200 from the very beginning.

Av3k-nosfa and Spart1e-maxter will have both players on triple-digit pings, surely without server switching, so I guess that's fair at least ;)

But then we'll have home-away server situation, which can and probably will lead to a situation where a deciding map is played on a server closer to one of them, potentially deciding the match by coin toss instead of skill :/

Hopefully ZenAku will get to play some maps in Europe instead of being forced to play everything in NA. He's our boy now, so go ZenAku!

Well, these prizes seem somewhat sustainable. You'd still need a job if you're not consistently top 3 but still nice having people getting something for their efforts.

As far as I gather, the players mainly sustain themselves via sponsoring and various social media income these days. Prize money is just a bonus.

I guess they are alright, since I am pretty sure they don’t play QC 8 hours a day and they are probably getting some money from elsewhere too. It also depends on the country they live in.

They're getting a full salary on a monthly basis just for being in the QPL.

The final placement prizepool is on top of that.

That's why there's almost more pro players active than average players. That's why players with 0 interest in the game or motivation left (like Cypher) still bother to log in once in a while instead of playing Apex Legends.

If it wasn't for that, the competitive scene would consist of 5 guys.

Chess players do not need to worry about missing information when looking away. In QC you can still see where the enemy goes most of the time.

He also looks to side, then into the camera twice, not only to the side.

I first noticed it while watching the VoD of the Av3k game, it gets intense because there isn't much time left and they are close, Av3k gets fragged and rages to the right, then the camera cuts to nosfa who after fragging his opponent is looking to the left somehow and repeats it couple of times before the map ends:

In such a clutch moment I would be so excited that my sphincter declares his independency and my eyes would be glued to the screen; ... yet somehow nosfa has on his left side something more interesting than the tournament he is currently competing in for price money.
That is why I decided to watch him vs. Dahang aswell, although I didn't really care about the matchup nor outcome.

What we currently got far exceeds what normally happens to a game with such a small player base. Complaining is quite absurd imho.

Back in 2017 there was a 1 million dollars (insert Mike Myers meme) price pool for QuakeCon. The stream was 10 FPS, the game was fundamentally broken in many areas (disregard the monetization crap, I'm talking actual technical issues).

PlayTracker estimates 9,2 million players downloaded this game. Where are they? Why have they left? Quake Live had equally bad launch (over a million accounts created on day 1 of open beta, of which several thousand decided to wait through the queue and play, the rest haven't played a single game), and yet it was way more popular in the first few years.

I linked this tournament to a friend who plays Q2. He said he gave QC another chance recently, but loading times made him rage-uninstall instantly (I don't blame him, QC's load times make Anthem blush).

I have a lot of way smaller games that are not just more polished, but not broken. Some of them AFPS-es, some of them with a form of Quake movement, but I have to play QC because it's the only one with active public TDM. But let me tell you this: I know of no other game that has engine this shit (yes, yes, WWZ, obviously ;))

I assume that's because the game is F2P. Who doesn't try a free game? I think there was a large influx of people who played DOOM Eternal and thought QC was similar in gameplay.

I don't play QC very much (or any game really), but I do still quite enjoy watching pros play it. They make it look fun/entertaining, whereas generally it does not feel that way to play it.

It's not that bad in publics (TDM/FFA, I'm not interested in duel or CTF-based modes on non-symmetric maps) where you're just shooting the shit, buuuuut... I should play like 7 games per hour (they often end before the 10 minute mark), meanwhile I'm lucky to get 3, half the time is spent on loading screens, the rest waiting for servers, not to mention 3+ minute warmups even though everyone is connected according to the score board, additional animations and crap. Oh, and 3 second respawn time, wtf is that? (It's not there in instagib and Unholy Trinity)

Of course it needs $2k+ computer to run acceptably on lowest settings, and while that doesn't scare me (I can tune DRAM timings which this DRAM-bound engine needs), it makes zero sense for a supposedly esports title...

Oh, and I've heard they're slowing down champions even more in the upcoming update, I'm already playing exclusively Nyx because everything else is slower than rockets in Q2, if I can't do 800 ups from RL to LG on ztn, it will kill the game for me.

Sigh.

PS. Oh yeah, and the best mode in the game is 2v2, but you can't queue for 2v2 and TDM at the same time, because reasons. (And there's no indication whether there's anyone in the 2v2 queue on my selected servers, so I can waste 30 minutes waiting or just queue for TDM and be done with it...)

Zsx is awesome, but he's too shy or something. He's supposed to provide the color commentary, he's the only actual high level player of the bunch, he's the only one who could read what both players' plan for the next 2 minutes of the game is. It seems he gets flabbergasted and forgets to analyze the game while trying to talk.

I totally get it - I've tried casting in the past and it's fucking hard! I have only love for zsx, he's just not a 2GD type, he's more of an introvert, so I don't know if he can ever reach that level. Still a good choice to get him in and he really improved, clicking much better with the others, I remember when his brain used to crash every time Jacky made a stupid edgy joke :) He's already much better, so I hope to be proven wrong :)

The one I miss is Ketchup, I'd swap him in instead of Lethal (who really doesn't add any value). Ketchup was always so well prepared with all the stats and history. Not a real analyst, but the amount of facts he could throw at you was always amazing.

Aren't you totally forgetting 40lions. Of all casters, he cracks the most borderline jokes which I really enjoy. And he stopped with the bad memes too (tramampoline...damn that was bad and got worse every time he said it). ZSX has rare insights here and there.

I think the QPL format is really driving quality across the board. Players are getting way more competitive experience, casters are getting more time/practice, and the production is really high quality for every stream now.

Now you know how Flee got his seat at the job. Some higher ups smashed those cheecks and bounced his ballsack on Flee's chin for hours on end.

Some maps were amazing nailbiters, with many situations coming down to one player pulling out amazing clutch moves.

However... Raisy was really strong and gave Rapha a very good fight.

I liked that this time America players fought Europe players! There were some nice series going on.

A bit disappointed about Cooller and Toxiq: Cooller doesnt took Dramis as a real threat and did loose (yeah Dramis hit impossible rails on third map). And Toxiq? Carreer over? What a decline. I feel sorry for him.

Playing on intercontinental pings with clientside-hit-prediction, just wow.
The games I watched were pretty good.

Insane final series. Raisy's play on corrupted keep was straight baller. Really glad they continue QPL because even with Rapha dominating it's always entertaining.

Deepest skill set isn't true. There is a champions meta sure but the ability to press a single "+button2" use key as a medkit or kamikaze isn't anything new in Quake. And what did we lose in exchange for abilities and some new meta?

Arbitrary speed-caps (as far as i know every champion has a maximum velocity vector limit for the strafe that caps out except for Visor, correct me if I'm wrong I don't pay attention to Quake Champions).

HP/armor limitations i.e. heavy/medium/light champions to contribute to the meta and add to the "Champions" / Tf2/ Overwatch concept.
i.m.o. this makes it easier to understand your opponent's stack than more complicated i.e. it simplifies rather than overcomplicates things because I know that a lighter champion can't hold a stack as much and is fluffier even with armor pickup (specifically the non-heavy).

30 second sychnorized item timers means delaying items is more important but also that it has never been so easy to pacman and keep track of items. infact because of champions meta most of the time it's okay to ignore a lot of armors. I see they will skip going to items 1/2 times in a row or split the items because there's no incentive to make a risky appearence on them anymore and items are more dangerous to play without position.

What about q3/QL? HP bubbles was 30 seconds respawn. Armors was 25. Mega was 35. Guns was 5. Everything was out of sync. You couldn't gobble each thing and the difficulty of deciding between yellow and red versus mega was really tough.

Also yellows was very valuable and you even have Greens on Aerowalk that was valuable. I watched this tourney and it looked like the game revolves around going A-> B B -> A mega heavy. Heavy mega. I haven't played the game too hard, i did see a good amount of the non-heavy armors used on the maps with railgun but it seems like a secondary thing for sure.

Overall, it seems like there's a lot more ways to cheese someone and it's paradoxically easier to play a slower style but also very dangerous to camp in one spot and try to +back ZTN style near the teleporters because of the champion abilities and aircontrol champs and other surprise elements.

Would I say it has the deepest skillset of any quake?
I would say Quake 1, Quake 2, and Quake 4 in some ways had more deep skillsets especially in team games. But deepness of skillset and width of things you need to keep track of and be aware of isn't as important as the ability to succeed in a game that is pure mechanical skill + chess.

I see so many of these north american players who are on the QPL bracket who wouldn't survive 90% of the duelers on the European Quake Live QLRanks.com 1600+ ELO duelers.

How many of them can beat just antii or GEKKO i'm not even talking like 2200+ legends who are LANable on Quake Live. It's a total different skill set and mechanics where you don't have all these cheese-mechanics.

ZorakWar might be able to hold his own, and obviously rapha and DaHanG but I legit don't know anyone else who would be able to play Quake Live on such a high level from that whole list of random names.

Same can be said for many of the european players. You can have insane aim like Venguerr or SeriouS but in QL that only gets you so far and cheesing with champions mechanics.

I'm glad they got rid of round-based mechanics but I'd say QL is a much better conveyer or pure "skill" as well as "brain" as an I.Q. test. But I will admit I was entertained watching this set. I watched all the Cypher matches and rapha matches and skipped most of everyone else. I'm curious how Raisy will play in QL. I see he had good and solid LG where it was advantageous to use it and I can't call him a slouch either, guy seemed solid as hell. I heard he isn't even a Quake player and if that's true that guy is very impressive.

Anyway, deepest skillset I would say some Quake Mods like QWTF had more deepness but entertaining sure, skillful, no I wouldn't say that.

In terms of skill I think every Quake game has been a dumb-ee-fication. Dumb, dumb, and dumber.

It all really started with Doom.

Quake Champions is a dumbed down Quake Franchise in general, Quake IV was a dumbed down Quake III/QL, QL was literally a dumbed down version of Quake 3, Quake 3 was a dumbed down version of Q2, and Quake 2 was a dumbed down version of Q1 and Doom players swear to this day that Q1 was a dumbed down sissified simplified version of Doom 2.

How do we know this? The developers multiple times told us this.
Carmack had to slow the movement speed of Q1 down so that the maps could be shrunk down and polygon count could be reduced and optimized so the game could run better. The movement speed was cucked.

Q2 added delay after railgun is shot (there was a built in lag) and weapons and movement generally feel more slower/bulkier as well as the pace. (no more 120 to -10 score lines in duels).

Q3 was a super dumbing down with the intention of making the game even slower than Q2 in some ways.

QL we know the countless examples of this shit. They completeley cucked VQ3 movement and made ground acceleration retarded.

Q4 I'm not even going to bother mentioning unless I dare invoke sanchez.

One thing I do know, there won't be any games quite like Doom, Quake 1,2,3 / QL in the future. Diabotical wanted to be QL 2.0, imo, QL will have more longevity than either QC or diabotical because the gameplay formula is more or less Q3.

If Microsoft/Zenimax can do what they did for QL as a refresher of the same core gameplay of Q1, Q2, or make a QL 2.0 I think there might be some hope for something interesting (not in the mainstream sense of the word but to actually make something fun and interesting for people who actually enjoyed these games), maybe that will be something.

Otherwise, stop making QC, DBT, and Quake 3 clones. It's just nauseating. Where is the originality? I love strafe/bunnyhop more than anybody and dash and wall runs but maybe it's time for something new. Something like Portal that made a lot of us think differently about FPS games. Next arena FPS? no idea... but the cake is a lie.

Also love Raphas new look, gives him more personality and looks like a young sensei.

Great finals! Rapha rocks as usual, Raisy is definitely top of the top, great player. K1llsen was excellent till end matches, Cypher and Cooller unmotivated as usual...I hope these guys would practice more and show more love to this game. Would also be nice to see Strenx, Stermy and Evil back, but probably will never happen.

Still I dont understand why would someone force players to play Tower of Koth in duel tournament. I know they miss maps and what not and want to make the game more interesting...but they should have invested that time in a creation of a proper duel map imo, when thats whats most important in this game. I imagine that map is good for FFA and TDM, but definitely waaay to big for duel.

It would be really nice to see Furious Heights (instead of Campgrounds), Lost World (instead of Corrupted Keep) and Aerowalk (instead of Awoken) in this game. This would be a great map rooster for stage 2/3: Molten Falls, Furious Heights, Lost World, Aerowalk, Bloodrun, Deep Embrace + New MAP. I know this will probably never happen, but still, man can dream, right?

Cypher played on a really high level and was just lacking his "insane-shape". Those games against vengeur were just top notch! Nothing to blame him for, you can't always have that 110% form.

the game is bleeding players as we speak, it's not even a fun casual game, or a class based team game that competes with the likes of overwatch and tf2, or even a good 1v1 quake title. it's also built on the exact same engine used for halo online, which means it makes the assets look like shit. not that the assets are any good to begin with, just the same depressing gothic architecture with sci-fi techonology mixed together.

this entire series has been relegated to duke nukem status, and the only way forward now is a single player campaign, which marty stratton and hugo martin refuse to support. they've essentially washed their hands off of the series, and are content to let it be a "forever multiplayer" game that dies in 4 months after every iteration.

i'd rather play warzone or fortnite or apex than spend even a single minute on this game, because those games actually function as fun, party games with millions of players. rather than a failed competitive game with 10, which is the direction that quake champions and now diabotical went.

i figured since rapha left nyc that this tournament would be a lot harder for him, but apparently he's well adapted to playing on 105ms that he regularly gets to eu west so props to him. but thankfully now that the governments around the world are ordering vaccines, we can now get back to lan only tournaments.

also, a big disappointment by serious who in the era of online only competition is somehow losing every online event. he stopped streaming regularly and he stopped practicing. the only thing he seems to do now is give 2hr lectures on why cpm physics is for noobs, why dafran and zywoo have bad aim, and why some unholy trinity players that hit 2% more than him in a single game are cheating.

It's simple, Serious' only strenght was hitting 50% lg with the aimbot. But now that almost every other pro is cheating too, he literally has nothing left to compete

Rapha was head and shoulders above everyone else, his dedication and perfection of his craft all credit to him.

Cypher played very well, very well could have beaten Rapha, but Rapha's on a different level.

Garpy was the only player alongside Cypher that I feel could've challenged Rapha, Raisy respects Rapha too much and relys too much on his aim (My opinion).

Makes me want to play QC.

Raisy's aim was insane and his confidence unrivalled.
