Time and time again, we've seen it over and over: Quake players are not competitive in other games.

End of story. Rapha, Cooller, Killsen, Clawz, and pretty much every single other quake pro remotely successful have tried to venture into other games, be it csgo, dota, overwatch, apex and fortnite. Even after months and months of intense practice, none of them could even become a blip on the radar of any of those games. Literally thousands of kids better than them in each of those games.

They're big fishes in the small pond that is competitive quake. The other games might not be so deep, but their talent pools are OCEANS big.

I mean sure they aren't as successful, but comparing them to a "blip", or saying that they're "not competitive, end of story" is exaggerated.

Cooller for instance was in a team that won DreamHack in Overwatch. Rapha & Dahang were playing in one of the top 10 best teams in the world.
I'm not going to even mention Winz, or Stermy.

rapha and dahang played for some professional overwatch team afaik, cooler also did that ... quake is very special that you need to have good movement abilities, need to collect items and you also have projectile weapons like rocket launcher or plasmagun ... cs, apex, et al. have very limited movement and are basically hitscan only, and they are more tactical, i.e. you dont need to move around all the time ... CS translates really good into Battle Royal and other games like Rainbow six, because movement and weapons are very similar, battle royal could just be another mod for cs with core cs gameplay, just like ctf without grapple and quake ... Quake players could do well in Unreal Tournament imho. or if there would be a BR mod for Quake that keeps the core gameplay

Pretty sure Rapha with Team Liquid did really fucking well in OW, but Rapha with his love of Quake and perhaps other financial motivations decided to jump ship to Quake.

I personally would've stayed with OW however.

Rapha did absolutely nothing in Overwatch. And he tried, oh if he tried. He was grinding like a madman, screaming in his mic and raging like a lunatic.

The only quaker remotely successfull in overwatch was Cooller, when he was picked as emergency fourth member in a team that carried him to a victory in a decent tournament, and dropped him immediately after for someone better.

The best Overwatch player between quakers was probably Cypher, his Genji and Tracer were vomit inducing. But he never managed to enter in a strong team.

In Team Liquid, there were three Quake players (Rapha, Dahang, and Id_), if they really weren't up to snuff, it would have been a disaster, and not only it wasn't a disaster, but they did extremely well.
In the 2017 Overwatch Pit they placed n°2 in USA. And when it came to qualifying to the "Overwatch Contenders" which was the big thing for Overwatch (and still is), it was super competitive, with open qualifiers, group stages, playoffs, and everything, dozens of teams trying to get in, only a select few being able to enter the league... Some favorite teams like Cloud9 failed (with star players like Surefour, star Korean players), couldn't secure their spot. Well, Team Liquid placed top 2 of that.

That's what it was, I knew they performed well... Rapha in particular.

I still think he should've stayed with OW, but he's his own man and he made his decision and I see him becoming a shoutcaster or at least working closely with the e-sports industry once Quake completely dies out.

I think it's become clear these days that Quake players really underestimated the level of competition and skill in other games for many years, mainly the 'glory days' of Quake 3.

My guess is that its not all just ego-stroking (everyone loves to say the game they play is the highest skilled shit ever) but also because other more popular games generally had a lower skill floor and barrier to entry to attract more players. Compare that to a new player getting dominated 50 to -1 in Quake and you get that thought that oh those other games are clearly for babies. But the reality is that even with a lower skill floor as an entry point, the sheer amount of competitors and the upper ceiling of skill allows a ridiculously high level of competition in popular games like CS and even fortnite, something that was never factored into these discussions back in the day.

I do think top Quake players could be top players in other games if they dedicated themselves to them, but mainly because they have shown they can put in the time and effort to improve at something and not because of some inherent mastery they have at video games solely from playing Quake. They certainly wouldn't be instantly dominating everyone or top tier automatically from their Quake experience and that's a harsh truth we need to accept.

I'm not sure that Quake really has a high skill floor. The rules are simple; the elements are few. The beauty of it is in how a player can build so much in his own game on top of that basic foundation.

Quake isn't a hard game to get into if you're playing against people at a similar level. It's just hard for new players because they always inevitably get put in the same games as people with much more experience.

If someone with much more experience can't stomp a relatively new player in one of these other games, what does that mean?

I think a lot of the more popular games have things built into them to lessen the impact of being beaten as a new player. Most big shooters these days are team games where you can blame your team if you lose or rely on them to win, it's never all on you like a Quake duel or FFA. Games with random recoil patterns and instant kill headshots mean even the worst player will be spraying and hit someone in the head and get a kill and feel good and continue playing. There is also the inherent randomness in Battle royales making it so you always have an excuse, and to make it feel like playing the slots everytime you spawn in where you could get lucky with some great loot drops on spawn.

In Gears of War the designers revealed that their stats showed that 90% of players don't play more than 1 game of it if they don't get a single kill in that game. So they fudged the stats and gave new players secret buffs so they could get kills in their early games and then removed them after a few matches. Games like Quake have nothing like that.

But like I said just because these games have lowered their barrier to entry doesn't mean they aren't really competitive at the top level. That's the misconception that Quakers in general have had for a long time.

Good points. Of course, games with a lot of highly serious players will extract as much skill as is possible. The question is how many are needed before that maximum level is reached in a particular game.

It seems what makes Quake so good is also what makes it unpopular.

It would be nice to have a popular Quake, so we can see what our pros are made of. I'm not so quick to discount them because of a small player pool (which is something I've seen going around lately).

There's real human limitations to consider. Multiplying the player pool won't take us beyond those.

Doubling the number of serious 100m runners isn't going to half the world record; it would probably shave off something like 0.01 seconds. And as for the not so serious, it wouldn't matter if you had a billion of those; nothing would change.

There's no one coming into Quake from any other game and suddenly hitting 60% LG average just because of the large player pool in the game they came from. Around 50% seems to be the hard limit. The same sort of thing can be said about reaction times.

I think what a large number of highly serious players would cause is an increase in the number of players at the existing top level, and then which player would win would become a lot more unpredictable. Instead of having just one rapha, you might have 15 of them, and then you wouldn't know which rapha is gonna take it.

If by "Quake" you mean the orinigal Quake1, it has a high skill floor. Controlled RJ and super fast bunnyhopping around the map are the floor level basics there, the other refinements come on top of that.The later pseudo quakes... not so much. Not a surprise really, they were all nerf-quakes created exactly to lower the quake skill impact.

Many simply weren't around to know, but the dilemma of the game needing some solution to vets stomping newcomers wasn't born with Q3 or Q4 or whatever, it came about after a couple of years of QW, and Q3 was the result. They nerfed weapon change, damages and movement, so basically everything that matters basically killing what made the game the badass quake it was supposed to be. That's why almost everyone who was really good at Quake, never bothered to really move on to Q3, they just played QW untill it died to them.

When Quake 1 came out, no one was doing those things. People played the game like it was Doom 2 deathmatch. The new movement techniques had to be discovered and came later. Noobs playing with other noobs don't need to know those things to play and enjoy the game. So those floor level basics are only such because of the general skill level present in the player base rather than the game itself. The actual game is pretty simple. The same can be said of the later Quake games.

That was only true for about a year, later on bunnying was as basic in QW as pressing "w' which as I wrote. Also, than it's even simpler in most other games. In OW and similars you don't even have to time, locate and pickup (fight for) weapons or powerups, they are all in your pocket from start. Which shows that having heroes is actually a skill nerf. That's why they were put into FPS, they are a nerf. Having many of them is not depth or meaningful invention, it's just self serving complication that comes about form the company desperately trying to keep the 12yearolds titillated about their game...

Well, yeah, as I said originally, the beauty of it is in how much the player can build in their own game on top of the basic foundation. I agree with the first half of your post; i disagree on the hypothesis that quakers could reach the top in any other mainstream game: for once they lack the mechanical skills to be at the top in any other shooter; cs, overwatch and fortnite players are on a whole other level of hand eye coordination and reaction times.

And they also lack the gestional and strategical skills to be competitive in mobas and rts like starcraft, dota, league.

Both of those points have been proven again and again. Quakers did try hard and long to get into other games, but it was embarrassign how much slower and less skillfull they were. And they just couldn't learn.
